Slayer Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 I would like to be able to get the 3DSMax model of the Ka-50 so I can load it into CS4 and see the skins as I work on them instead of having to repack into a .cdds, repackage mod, uninstall old version then reinstall new version or trying to remove and insert into the cdds. This would be a huge timesaver, but the way I understand it is that the 3ds max models are converted to a .lom file? Is there any way to reverse this or unpackage it back to a 3d model I could use in CS4? Wondering how the dev team did it...this way is so time consuming and frustrating.... Slayer Posted January 27, 2009 Author Posted January 27, 2009 I would even be happy how to use modelviewer if I could figure out how to make it display my skin....just no documentation on how to use it in the game files that I can see. X32Wright Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 (edited) This is not possible. Most 3d models were made for a specific product or company so I doubt they would get released. Also it is very hard to really know how the .max model is put together in the game. It might have its own way of being pieced together using 'Null Object' (reference point) based on the way the game engine works not to mention how the LOD (Level of Detail) is handled as well as the 'Damage/Flight Modeling' and other technical game issues. This is specially true due to the 'pilot rejection' mechanism modeled in the game. We have no clue if several models are switched around depending on the 'game state' or if a single model is used with null objects to hold it together and animate that for the various 'helo states' dependng on flight and damage modeling. I think the reason for releasing the PSD for BS by DCS is so that we can follow that for making skins. This is so much better than other companies where u have to reverse engineer the skin layout by yourself. True that it would be nice if they have some kind of Skin model viewer. Chibawang Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 To view your skin in the model viewer, simply name your texture files like so: KA-50-Paint1.psd = KA-50-PAINT1-DEF-01.bmp KA-50-Paint2.psd = KA-50-PAINT1-DEF-02.bmp KA-50-Paint3.psd = KA-50-PAINT1-DEF-03.bmp KA-50-Paint4.psd = KA-50-PAINT1-DEF-04.bmp KA-50-Paint5.psd = KA-50-PAINT1-DEF-05.bmp KA-50-Paint6.psd = KA-50-PAINT1-DEF-06.bmp KA-50-LRM.psd = KA-50-LRM-1.bmp KA-50-LRMpart.psd = KA-50-LRMpart-1.bmp KA-50-LRMcentre.psd = KA-50-LRM_centre.bmp KA-50LRM_B.psd = KA-50-LRM_B.bmp Copy them over to Ka-50\Bazaar\TempTextures\, run ModelViewer and tada! You have a nice preview of your skin. If you make any changes to the files you must restart the program for it to show up, simply reloading the model won't do. 1

SuperKungFu Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I believe we tried zmodelers a while back but it didn't work with walmis F-15 model (since he lost it). It's just a coincidence that that software coverts "lom" file but lock on's lom file is different. I believe it stands for lock on model. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Chibawang Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Haven't used zmodeller personally, but others have said that it will import .lom, but not export. This feature is purposely disabled at the request of ED, to prevent their models from being used in anything but their games. I guess I can understand that, but if you ask me it's a bit overkill. If someone steals your model, you can always just sue the shit out of them. But yea, I feel your pain Slayer. I would love to be able to use a program like Deep Paint 3D to fix my seams instead of having to guesstimate for hours on end until I get it right.

Good find, I haven't seen this info before. I was wondering why some people who were making skins were using this type of naming convention. I just figured they were taking the textures directly from the game and not using the .psd files. The weird thing for me is when I have to switch the Paint 1 and 2 files around in my skin.lma7 file or the textures come out wrong. This sounds like a great timesaver at any rate, thanks for the tip. If someone had the skills they could just make a "shell" for import into CS4 of the outside of the blackshark to wrap the texture files onto. I can do some retexturing, but I suck at 3DSMAX and don't have a current version. The last time I tried to learn it I think it was on version 5...quite a while ago. You're saying you could still use the uv maps with this technique and the coordinates would be preserved properly? That would be very handy indeed. I've just started relearning max, I haven't used it in six or seven years but it's all still up there somewhere.
Grimes Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Theoretically it is possible to do this, however that seems like an awe full lot of work just to provide a model to paint on in Photoshop. Sadly I don't quite understand the power that the 3D paint feature in CS4 affords. Is it similar to ZBrush or Maxons bodypaint? The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world. Slayer Posted January 29, 2009 Author Posted January 29, 2009 With CS4 Extended you can open a 3D window , load a model from popular programs such as 3dsmax and see your results as you work on it. very cool. shaggy Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Yeah and HUAF-074 wouldn't that be illegal to open up other peoples models, especially ED. I have seen you stolen other peoples models also. Like freeware models for flight simulator and payware alphasim gripen. When are you going to stop? Personally i think its not cool and you are a theif. And sure moderators you can delete this message if you feel its provocative. DTWD Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Hang on here, he has opened the model (although it may be against the backwards engineering part of the t&cs) he hasn't hurt anyone. If what you say is true about him "borrowing" other peoples models I suppose it depends what he does with them. Alll he has shown us is that it's possible to open up EDs models. Regards [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
shaggy Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 He was in a team who mad an hungarian mod for lock on including alpha simulations payware Gripen aircraft from Flight Simulator. This is a model stolen from Flight Simulator http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=36433 . He does what ever he wants with them, but i personally think it sucks. Chibawang Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Well, freeware models are... freeware. I don't see the big deal, especially with including it in a free lock on mod. Unless of course he took credit for the model.
NRG-Vampire Posted February 2, 2009 Posted February 2, 2009 Never say never, everything is possible... Uh, Amazing ! Is it possible to open old .CMD files with 3ds MAX and making .CMD models to more datailed and converted into .LOM (F-14A, F-16C, MiG-31 etc.) ? Sizes and shapes are given only higher poly. numbers and refining needs.
