Mk1_Trebuchet Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 Sorry to take up space with another one of 'those' posts.... Not sure if this is the right place, but it seemed appropriate since I'm looking for advice specific to VR. I'm in the process of building a new DCS rig, specifically for VR. Currently using a Reverb G2, but definitely interested in some of the high-res stuff coming down the road. I've got everything on hand, or on the way.... except the GPU. Z790 Motherboard, i9 13900K, 64GB DDR5 etc, etc.... What I have not been able to really get my head around is if shelling out for an RTX 4090 over a 4080 is really worth it for DCS. I understand that the game engine is pretty much the limiting factor at the moment, and that changes are on the way. But right now, what hardware factors/limits are actually important with DCS? Is 8 more GB of VRAM going to make enough difference to justify the price differential? Will I go from a GPU bottleneck to a CPU (or even a bus) bottleneck? I know, I can hear you saying "If you've already shelled out that much cash for those components, why are you so worked up about spending a little more for a top of the line GPU?" First, 4080's are readily available and at MSRP, and second... I hate scalpers and have zero interest in feeding that beast... even if I have to wait a while to pick up a 4090. Your thoughts are appreciated. Asrock X870E Nova - AMD 9800x3d - RTX 4090 - 64GB DDR5 - (2x) Crucial T705 - Varjo Aero
72Stu Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 Have a look at Gamers Nexus' review of the 4080.....
ignition22 Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 The thing is that everyone has a different interpretation of "worth-while" which I guess is a combination of your wealth/earning potential and tendency towards overspending vs frugality. So you will just end up with a bunch of responses based on other people's feelings of worth-while-ness which doesn't match yours.
Hotdognz Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 Just popped a 4090 into my newly built PC, similar specs except a Z690 13700K and 64gb DDR4, I had a 3090 prior which just sold so upgrade to the 4090 cost me $1400 AUD I just plonked it in, kept my old G2 settings in Windows for OpenXR, booted up DCS set all settings to high except the shadows on the RH side of the setting's tab, in the F18/Syria free flight i have gone from a steady 45fps to 60-68 smooth as a baby's bum, I have made no other changes or tweaks in Windows. I have seen no need to go tweaking stuff so far. 1
speed-of-heat Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 The thing with GN and most other reviewers is they don't test VR, and they don't test DCS in VR, we are a corner case of a corner case. I have seen 18 or 19gb or Vram used in missions, which would exceed the 4080 just, but I don't have a feel for by how much of an impact that would have. I deliberately waited to upgrade my 3090 to a 4090, I am not disappointed by the investment. 3 1 SYSTEM SPECS: Hardware AMD 9800X3D, 64Gb RAM, 4090 FE, Virpil T50CM3 Throttle, WinWIng Orion 2 & F-16EX + MFG Crosswinds V2, Varjo Aero SOFTWARE: Microsoft Windows 11, VoiceAttack & VAICOM PRO YOUTUBE CHANNEL: @speed-of-heat
WipeUout Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 4080 user here. I am driving a Pimax 8kX at native resolution (4k per eye) with good level of details and great resolution that does not require absolutely MSAA. Vram is a strange issue. it seems that the more you have the more it get filled. I do not see or feel an issue so far, even in MP flying in South Atlantic. My advice is save money on GPU, get a 4080, sell the G2 and get a Pimax 8kX. The difference in immersion will blow your mind away. 1 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9800X3D, RTX 4090, 96GB DDR 5, MSI Tomahawk 870E, Crucial 2TB x 2, TM WARTHOG COMBO + PENDULAR RUDDER PEDALS, THE AMAZING PIMAX 8K X, Sony 5.1 Spks+SubW | DCS, A-10C_II, AH-64D, F-14/15E/16/18, F-86F, AV-8B, M-2000C, SA342, Huey, Spitfire, FC3.
Nodak Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 (edited) 256 bus in a 4080, vs 320 in a 3080, not so sure that's an ideal trade off in VR for a solid increase, seeing as how a 4090 has a 384 bus. The 4080TI specs are calling for a 320 bus once again. Don't think your gaining much future proofing by going 4080. Bus speed is more important in VR than it is to flat screens, pretty sure it'll be noticed if you move up the resolutions when you upgrade HMD's. If you want to save a nickle wait for the TI, its just around the bend. Edited February 16, 2023 by Nodak 1
