Roosterfeet Posted March 5, 2023 Posted March 5, 2023 What's the current thinking on Windows 11 vs Windows 10 for DCS? 1 5800x3D, rtx4070, Quest3 (sometimes)
Dragon1-1 Posted March 6, 2023 Posted March 6, 2023 Unless you have a 13-series Intel CPU, you only get even more spyware to block/disable. Otherwise, it's a repackaged 10. If you do have such a CPU, it does some things better, but I'll let others talk about this since I'm on a 5800X3D (and Win 10, in no particular rush to upgrade). 2 1
BitMaster Posted March 8, 2023 Posted March 8, 2023 I run 11 on all of my own machines and most of my clients, family and friends, those on 10 have mostly incompatible hardware, only 1 company still runs 10, worldwide afaik, so I follow with that local office. If you are afraid of Windows 11 spying on you, Windows 10 is not the answer, that's for sure. 2 Gigabyte Aorus X570S Master - Ryzen 5900X - Gskill 64GB 3200/CL14@3600/CL14 - Sapphire Nitro+ 7800XT - 4x Samsung 980Pro 1TB - 1x Samsung 870 Evo 1TB - 1x SanDisc 120GB SSD - Heatkiller IV - MoRa3-360LT@9x120mm Noctua F12 - Corsair AXi-1200 - TiR5-Pro - Warthog Hotas - Saitek Combat Pedals - Asus XG27ACG QHD 180Hz - Corsair K70 RGB Pro - Win11 Pro/Linux - Phanteks Evolv-X
Ramstein Posted March 8, 2023 Posted March 8, 2023 if you have a slightly older computer stay with 10 for now. if it is new and high end go with 11. darkman222 Posted April 16, 2023 Posted April 16, 2023 Using a Intel Core i9-12900KS you would recommend staying on W10 @Dragon1-1, correct? What if I wanted to spend some money upgrading to a Intel Core i9-13900 together with W11? Do you see any big improvements? Or would it be a waste of money? I mean I did some tests on W10 vs W11 but that was a year or more ago, long before Multithreaded DCS.
Dragon1-1 Posted April 16, 2023 Posted April 16, 2023 I don't know, I have a Ryzen 5800X3D and I'm happy with it. I don't know how much you get out of upgrading, but I doubt going from 12 series to 13 series is a big jump. That said, it's not impossible the 12 series can benefit from Windows 11 already, but I don't know. Either way, this particular upgrade likely won't do much for DCS either way, your current CPU is powerful enough. You'd likely be better off with a new GPU, unless you're already running something like a 3090.
darkman222 Posted April 16, 2023 Posted April 16, 2023 I am running a 4090 and VR and I have a pretty sweet spot between VR resolution and GPU frame time. Its again the CPU that struggles. Even with MT. I did a test back then with my i9-12900KS and people said that W11 will be able to squeeze more performance out of it than W10. So I installed it and the performance was the same if not a little bit worse on W11 compared to W10. So I went back to W10. At least as long as I have my i9-12900KS.
Dragon1-1 Posted April 16, 2023 Posted April 16, 2023 (edited) Note, MT only changed the rendering side of things to scale properly. The rest is still on the "main thread", so it might be sim logic or AI that's CPU limited, and an upgrade is unlikely to help much with that, since it's all on one thread. There's only so much hardware can do at the moment, the current approach still has limits. Edited April 16, 2023 by Dragon1-1 1
72westy Posted April 19, 2023 Posted April 19, 2023 I refuse to go with an OS merely due to a company running a said version. Almost all companies run bare min hardware and when they upgrade the OS almost always end up with software compatibility issue/s down the road. MarkyMark Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 Windows 11 runs fine for me. I hate the interface changes from 10, but DCS runs fine or better for me.

You might want to try this... mpo_disable.reg I lost about 10-% performances from a stock (brand new out-of-the-bos-stock-settings) after testing my GPU in DCS (VR), since there have been a DCS "VR Update" at the same time I was sure it came from it, which in part was true, but there are other things which prevent GPUs to perform to their true potential in Windows 11 (Pro in my case). You won't believe that I have to boost my card now to get within a few % from the performances I had with a stock card, and when I tried to OC it it crashed with mention "Driver Time Out", so I investigated and find this solution used by an AMD user, it seems to work at many levels but I am sure it is not the only thing in Windows 11 holding GPU performances. Here are my actual settings: The card runs smooth, no crashes, no flickering, image quality and clarity are good, performance is <> a few % of what I had before losing to whatever it was, but this app seems to be working, note that I have a very good case cooling (5 case fans + 1 CPU fan) and the temperature of the GPU stays within reasonable limits (max 81°C Junction under heavy load). I can't guaranty that this solution will work for you but it's worth a try. Win 11Pro. Corsair RM1000X PSU. ctguy1955 Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 I bought a 12900K that I watercool and let the ROG MB bios OC itself 71% and flying a P51D-30 in Normandy 2.0, I get high 80 fps with a evga 2080Ti. I am not able to install win 11 because of a secure boot problem. I just bought three new gaming monitors and have to wait to get a 1 TB SSD to update to Win 11 and just a few apps I like. darkman222 Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 (edited) Are you checking whats bottlenecking your system? Try to check CPU frame times. With the integrated performance tool from ED (RightCRL + Pause) or with an external one. Do that before you update to W11. I am looking forward to see the results. The main thing with W10 vs W11 is the rumor that W11 can use the newer generation of CPUs better. I did not get any hard proof that made me seriously switch to W11.... yet. Clear Skies Mike Any system capable of running a 12th-gen Intel CPU will run on 11. I admit, if you never worked with Secure Boot, TPM and all there is to select and enable in Bios it can be tricky at first. On the other hand, any 12th gen Intel based board should by default have Bios setting that let you install 11 out of the box. Maybe update-&-reset your Bios if you dont feel comfortable to dial in the settings yourself. Junkyness Posted July 15, 2024 Posted July 15, 2024 (edited) I’ve been diving into DCS lately and had the same question! I was on Windows 10 and recently made the leap to Windows 11. So far, I’ve noticed some improvements in performance and loading times, which is nice for the sim experience. However, there are still some quirks, especially with older mods that may not be fully compatible yet. It might be worth checking forums for specific feedback from others who’ve switched. I found https://operatingsystems.info/ really helpful for tips on optimizing Windows for gaming, too. Overall, if you’re ready to experiment a bit, Windows 11 seems promising, but sticking with 10 for now is totally valid if you want stability. Edited July 18, 2024 by Junkyness
