The FOV is basically the same. Not sure what you are referring to when you say single lens vs dual.

the quest pro might have two elements per eye, where the q3 might have one. Though it may not make much difference for fov in this case if they've used a re-designed single element per eye for the q3

Will the Q3 be clearer than the QP even after the higher PD achievable with DFR is taken into account? Not to mention having 4x MSAA? Having just bought a QP maybe I don’t want to actually know the answer to that.😉

What headset did you come from?

I am really curious for someone to do a Quest Pro vs quest 3 comparison but for DCS or sims in generally.

Initial impressions are that Q3 has clarity like Reverb G2 lenses but all over so that would mean better overall resolution. Colors are probably brighter on the quest pro. We are also probably limited to ASW with the Q3 if you can't hit 90fps whereas the pro can run 72hz.

That's one thing I'm disappointed with on the Q3 specs - no 72hz. I get better performance out of my G2 at 60hz than I do my Quest 2 at 72hz and lower resolution; same DCS settings. So I'm thinking at 90hz my performance with a Q3 won't be so good. I don't like using ASW.

The other advantage the pro has is using DFR so that will help performance. I know the pro is no longer going to be produced but as long as it will still be supported it should be fine.

There is at least one person that pre-ordered a quest 3 to try out DCS. I'm eagerly awaiting the results!

@sze5003 from a G2 (which I still own).

Specs: 4090, 5900x, 64gb ddr4.

It’s hard to describe the difference, the g2 is sharper in the sweet spot. For example the text on mfds or huds is better defined where as with the QP you can see some pixilation for want of a better/ more accurate word. But Strangely overall (and especially in the cockpit (double brackets! And especially in a warbird or dial heavy cockpit such as the Tomcat) it’s much nicer on the eye. The way light works seems more believable too, ie the sun low on the horizon. That being said I’m seeing some odd (and not good) things with night time flights.

But the key factor for me is @72hz a non reprojection but with good gfx setup is achievable, it isn’t on a g2. Ofc it all depends on what/where you are flying, the ah64 or f15e is still going to push you into reprojection.

Honestly I don’t think a QP is worth 1k if you already own a g2, but only because I think the link cable lets it down, and that’s probably going to be the case with the Q3 too.

Only my two pence worth and I’m far from an expert in the field.

It depends I think most people would prefer a clear picture all over vs a sweet spot in the center.

I know it sucks about the link cable but you can put the bitrate up to 500 or so and that should help. The Q3 should have better performance in this regard.

I suspect your mobo will determine how well the link cable will do what it’s advertised to do. But that’s just my experience.

For example, I spent £90 on the official link cable but it would not maintain any level of charge in the headset. From what I’ve read that is possibly a common problem with Asus  mobos.

Also I may have just been unlucky.

Even ignoring that, I’m not keen on having to take my usb ports capabilities into account. Trying to get gpu and cpu frame times dialled for full refresh rate is enough of a job. 🙂

I remember people in the Q pro subreddit talking about not using the official link cable because it didn't help with the charge and they recommended using this instead.

I also have an Asus z790e board so I'm familiar with the USB power distribution which can be tricky on these boards.

yeah I think that's the only one I've seen mentioned that will maintain the current charge state while in use on the pro. All the ones I've tried that don't have a second USB connection achieve about 3.5 hours during use, starting from a full charge

I ordered the 512 GB version yesterday, along with the Pro bundle ( strap and battery pack).  Amazon says headset I will receive Oct 12th and battery/strap yet to be determined on delivery. I will only be using this device in stand alone mode. I will not be connecting it to my PC, I have my Aero I use for that. No Oculus software will be on my PC.

Ordered 128G mainly for PCVR, and occasionally standalone for a few titles. Will see how it works out…visual/performance etc. Selling out Pico4 very soon.

Looking forward to impressions if you do happen to try it out in DCS. I feel like with the G2 I only ever used it for DCS and because of wmr and workarounds I never dabbled too much in actual VR games. I also wasn't a fan of the controllers but that's besides the point.

It would be nice to have a headset that works nicely with my primary function for flight but also the ease of accessing other games if need be.

@sze5003 will arrive mid Oct or so. Also mainly spend time on flight sim w/VR. But my pc rig is in another city so have to start from standalone before taking it back home later this month. Yes I will try anyway with my PC and let you know how it goes. Before that, guess we could see others’ feedback. 🙂

A question for you guys who have done your research, for those of us getting into DCS VR, is this headset a good buy? What are the primary downsides or benefits as compared to other options for DCS use?

This looks relatively inexpensive, versatile and seems like somewhat good specs? I tried the previous quest 2 model in DCS and found it to be somewhat clunky in use and perhaps just below what i would find to be acceptable image quality (for DCS), but it was amazing in other applications. Figured this new version might just be the upgrade it needed for DCS...

Probably best to wait and see reports from users here once they have their headsets and using them. Certainly it should be better at least than Quest 2.

On paper it's better than quest 2 and possibly the G2 if you think about the fov and pancake lenses. But that does not matter if it will run like crap in DCS. So we wait to see actual usage of it from those that pre-ordered.

for the price, i'm pretty sure it will become the new staple, more less what the G2 is now but with it's other improvements and features too, as a bonus. If it's hand-laser pointing tracking is as good, or better, than what I'm getting on the leap at the moment in DCS and MSFS, that alone will be awesome from my perspective.   Downside - possibly video compression when using USB link, but even that may have improved. soon to find out

might need to ask yourself - can you bear the thought of Mark pleasuring himself behind his desk while watching you as one of a million squares on his gigantic video wall? 😛

I wonder what Xi does while watching the pico4 users?

Honestly to say. Q3 is far from a perfect headset for DCS. Aero or Crystal could be a step closer. But since those 2 (w/ 1000-1500 price tag) are far from perfect as well, around $500, Q3 might be the best one for now from a major OEM. Would like to use it till next gen PCVR released (at least in a yr or two?) No matter the feedbacks on actual experience, the fact is we don’t have a lot of options in the market yet. So I just “blindly” pre-order it… anyway it’s better than Q2 which quite some people are using it with DCS today. FYI. That’s just my logic. 🙂

Are there any indications of how AR might work with DCS?  As a simpit owner, the dream would be being able to draw a horizontal plane in meatspace, and above the plane show DCS, below do passthrough.

Playing on 60Hz?

I prefer some shutter in 90Hz over the pain of using 60Hz. I had a Quest 1 myself and tried a Q2 for a month that was lend by a friend. After that testing i bought my G2.

90Hz feels good when not shuttering, 72Hz was okay, too. But with 60Hz I always had a feeling of sickness all the time. Therefor I am lucky, that 72Hz will be back with Q3

Since I always had fun Playing VR games on my Q1 and G2 is very acceptable with DCS I will buy the Q3 as soon as i have the money for it because even though it might not make DCS better than G2 but if you ever tried to play normal VR Games with G2, you find out that it is no fun atall with this bad Controller Tracking. Therefor I hope Q3 will bring VR Gaming back to me so DCS is not the only VR game i can play anymore.

(Sideinformation: I sold my Q1 long time ago to better finance my G2 and that was a big mistake. Both headsets had a salespoint and I lost more overall playabillity by not buying Q2 than I got with the better performance in DCS-G2. Performance was a bit better with G2 but I lost all other VR game Fun)
