This is correct behavior. VS is a legacy mode that's incompatible with MSI, so it's not available via the pushbutton rotation.

Yes, this has been corrected between the time the video was recorded and today.

It's funny with 4 responses nobody covers how to actually enter VS mode.

You use the TDC cursor to hover over the radar mode at the top left of the radar screen. You'll see the three modes appear. Then select with your TDC depress.

It has its uses. Depends on the situation. If you want a long range steady, strong lock on targets with no jamming ability, it works extremely well.

How does antenna elevation work though? Since it doesn't have ranging.

Uses standard elevation procedure. It shows on the AZL, or radar cursor.  All other controls work as normal. Ideal to use in conjunction with datalink on SA page, which will give you a good idea of which contact is closest.  You can adjust the azimuth and elevation as normal.

as soon as you obtain a lock, range information is available from the missile range cue on the HUD.  Only the radar scan itself doesn’t have range info.  Once you obtain a lock, range appears on the HUD as normal.

In fact, it’s quickly becoming my preferred method when engaging BVR with targets without jamming ability (an su-33 will jam you every single time, unless it’s engaging something else, in which case I’ll use TWS to avoid FF).

VS mode will lock at very long range, and maintain a solid lock.  62 miles is the longest lock I’ve achieved so far.

it will also maintain an excellent lock as you turn away towards the next target, once it goes pitbull, undesignate the 1st, lock the second, repeat, both dead.

I'm confused about this. If I'm not mistaken, the FCR display doesn't have  "range", so antenna how would I know my elevation at 20 miles, for example.

If you try it, you will see that you can adjust the radar elevation as normal. I assume this mode has a general maximum fixed range and calculates it as such. I don’t know what that is, but maybe it’s a default of 160 miles (same as the max RWS scan range)

The radar elevation display on the cursor in VS mode is calculated if the range scale were at 80nmi (according to the -742).

Thanks for the clarification on the range assumption, what’s the “-742” you referred to? Good to know it’s not 160, that range is useless when SA page is available and set to 160 if required.
