Can you just bind any push button in the cockpit?

Pretty much.  To get A/P activated you'll either have two bindings (A/P button and whichever UFC button for the mode you're looking for -- so in your case the UFC A/P button and the UFC 1 button) or use some sort of macro to press 2 buttons.  But if it's a binding in the binding list (or if you can add it via .lua edits) you can bind it to whatever you want (with a few exceptions for "special" bindings).

Bind the HOTAS button to push the A/P button and then the same BTN but using the OFF option button corresponding to the BALT hold. Press your HOTAS button, wait a micro breath then release. No code or scripting or 3rd party software needed.

Do you mean inside DCS? Or in the HOTAS software configuration?

That's a neat work around that's possible now.  Hadn't thought of it.
