I think I've got the TGP/Mav thing down, except when I have to manouver.

For example, I'm trying to hit a SAM site, TGP designating the target, hand off to the Mav and everything is fine- I get good hits 90% of the tiime.

Unfortunatly, the SAM sites tend to fire back and during my defensive manouvers, the lock is lost and I have to start again

How do I get the TGP/Mav to keep lock or regain lock?

TGP should keep lock for most of the time. If it still has a lock, you can at all times simply reslave your Mav to it.

Alternativly you can also look outside and remember the rough location of the TGP spot with the help of the helmet sight.

You can also drop a markpoint on the target, so you can slave everything there at all times again.

On top of that, though I'm not 100% sure anymore, any time you fire a weapon, Markpoint Z is automatically generated. I am not certain anymore but it could be that this markpoint is placed on the spot you fired at, so you can use that aswell.

Yup, markpoint Z is automatically placed where the IFFCC calculated the last used weapon to impact.

Which track, both TGP and Mav or just the Mav?

The Mav has a hard time maintaining track during maneuvers, but as long as the TGP is still on target, you can just slave all back to SPI (with TGP as SPI).

The TGP is ground stabilized and should remember the spot on the ground it was last slewed to. As long as you don't slew the TGP when it gets masked, it should get right back onto the target after becoming unmasked again. If it doesn't, you'll have to get it on target manually. And like razo+r already says, using a markpoint is the best and fastest way, unless you already have the steerpoint on your target.

Even better: let's say you're tracking a SAM in the TGP, you've dropped a markpoint with TMS Right Short, now you're defensive and the TGP has gone bonkers - just hit TMS Right Long to make last mark SPI, then Slave all to SPI, and both your TGP and your Mav should go right back to the SAM site.

If you maneuver outside the MAV seeker limits, I think it loses its lock.  The TGP only loses its position if you pull its target through the gimbal lock area between the TVV and the boresight circle.

As such, if you're going to maneuver the target through the forward gimbal lock area, try to make a markpoint and make that markpoint SPI (TMS right short, then TMS right long).  Then, if either the TGP or MAV wander off, a quick China hat forwards long will reslave both to the markpoint.

OTOH, if you're maneuvering with the target off to the side, it's unlikely the TGP will lose its position, so you could just keep the TGP as SPI and hope for the best.  Then, if the MAV wanders off, China hat forwards (or aft) long will reslave it to the TGP.

In either case, the sequence to quickly reslave and relock would be

  • MAV SOI
  • China hat forwards long
  • TMS up short
