CPU / GPU Question

Current system feeling long in the tooth, despite various upgrades…

Looking at a system based around a Ryzen 7900 / RTX4080

Future proof, adequate, or better bang for buck elsewhere???

Any thoughts appreciated

If you can get a x3d that would give you better overall performance…. Nothing is really future proof…

Looks like a solid combination. I don't know what the price difference between a 4080 and 4090 is currently. Either one isn't exactly a steal. Might wanna check if the difference is still in the budget....

Local shop here:

+/- 800€ right now (+/- 1500€ for a 4080 to +/- 2300€ for a 4090).

AMD RX 7900XTX sets you back +/- 1250€

I'm not super fond of that 12 core on paper. The 3D mostly only benefits half the CPU, so one with an 8 core CCD will be of better benefit to gaming performance long term. IMO if you're mostly only gaming get the 7800X3D, or 7950X3D if you're gonna need the extra threads.

I wpuld not pick the twelve core but go for the 1-tile 8-core 7800X3D instead.

A: It has 2 more cores that can use the bigger cache

B: there is no scheduler cleverness needed here, it's only 1 type of core, avoiding headaches.

If you need more cores, go for the full 16 core 7950X3D so you have 1 tile with 8 cores on 3D cache but may have to tweak affinity here and there, depending on the cleverness of the software involved.
