Does are Super Hornet?

Superhornet_vs_hornet.jpg

Angular Super Hornet vs oval Hornet air intakes.

Yes, the Super Hornet has new engine intakes, besides different other things, like engines and stuff.

What specific gains were they looking for with the redesigned intakes?

It is for reducing RCS. The new intakes protect the fan blades from incoming radar signals. In fact, for a 4.5 gen fighter, the Super Hornet has advanced radar signature reduction measures. The canted aesa radar also helps a lot, apart from surface treatment and more angular airframe joins.

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Apart from intakes Super Hornet is 20% bigger in general size than it's older brother!

Thanks for the excellent pics, guys! PS is that really a Sparrow missile he is carrying? Maybe for a drone shootout exercise?

Looks like practice one, note the blue bands on the front and aft sections. No motor no explosives. If it was real you would see yellow band and a brown band.

You're right, probably just to practice acquisition sequences! I still find the Sparrow an awesome missile, I suppose they should some now and then on practice ranges to empty the stocks, or doesn't it work that way?

I think they used them so pilots get used to the weight and drag of the missiles in the aircraft. Obviously, a heavier aircraft with more drag would act differently. I do not think they need them to practice acquisition, but I am not a pilot, so I do not know for sure.

Also I think it cost more money to fire the thing than to dismantle them and destroy. IF the fire them I think they would fire them to a drone and cost of fuel etc.

I think is crazy how all this guys get so close to the engine intakes all the time.

First Australian Super Horror

"First Australian Super Horror", do you not like the F/A-18E/F? How come? If you don't mind me asking.

For Some reason I always thought the "Super Bug" was so much bigger than the "Normal Bug"

(being that is 20% bigger IIRC) but it does not look that big or bigger in person. Maybe if I would have seen them next to each other.

They technicaly havea defence force.. A.D.F. same as finland.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

Super Horror, I like this nick, but dont like his air resistance ;)

Corner speed:

Low level

"C" model 19,2 degree per second

"E" model 18 degree per second

15000 ft

"C" model 12.3 degree per second

"E" model 11.6 degree per second

Speed loss:

Low level

"C" model 54 knot per second

"E" model 65 knot per second

15000 ft

"C" model 62 knot per second

"E" model 76 knot per second

Nevertheless this is beautiful aircraft ;)

Give me "flying telephone pole" (SA-2)!

I guess this is the reason why the Super Hornet has no airbrake: it simply IS an airbrake ;)

But Kusch, those old Tomcat is better than Super Hornet" threads have become a little obsolete now.
