DCS doesn't launch even on clean install

Since last couple of weeks DCS fails to start at all. I double click the app or updater and nothing happens. I don't use Occulus. I have updated NVIDIA driver and lates Win 10 patch. I've reinstalled DCS and deleted Save games files. The log is simple and .log non informative.

Try this:

  1. Browse to ".\DCS World\distr".
  2. Run theses two binaries, one at a time:
  • vc_redist.x64.exe
  • vcredist_x64.exe

One of them will probably tell you it cannot be installed, because it is already installed. That's OK.

If nothing helps, temporarily disable your antivirus and test DCS.

More advice here:

As Flappie said, check your anti-virus.  McAfee and ESET specifically seem to be causing issues with one of the latest updates.  Norton too on this one and Kapersky is often a culprit.

Im using Windows Defender. Even when I shut down its protection, launch failed. Now log goes like this. I have also reinstalled C++. I renamed files in app data as described.

Looks like the app isn't really starting.  Have you checked your system logs (event/application) to see if it throws a system level error?  Or tried to run that exe from a command line window?

CMD gives nothing. Where should I look for the log?

The last time I saw this exact issue, the user has to refresh his Windows.

Please mind that the Windows refresh will make you lose some apps and apps data. If you consider it, first backup your data.

The easy(ish) way is Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer

Then look under Windows Logs for things in Application and System, but Flappie has a valid point.  There comes a time when you almost have to rebuild Windows; refresh is okay, but I tend to start over when it gets to that point and everything is butterflies and roses for a year or two...

I'm putting off Windows 11, kind of like how I put off 3.2, 3.5, ME, Vista, and ME v2 (aka 8).  I have a doc to get me through the worst of setup (from when I gave it a try) if it ever comes to that, so if you reinstall pick your poison!

Windows reset is way too damaging, because it would take a lot of effort to reinstall all application (including those that I don't remember). There must be some reason. Could it be Oracle Virtual Box? I've installed it some time ago and maybe some of it's dependencies are conflicting with DCS.

UPD: uninstalling it didn't work.

As long as you believe the issue is not on your side, we won't be able to help.

Do you have Riva Tuner installed?

I've found a way. I have deleted OvGME mod manager (I didn't even remember having one) and deinstalled remnants of old ZoneAlarm antivirus/firewall (I had removed it a long time ago, but still found it in a control panel now). They I reboot my PC it DCS now works. I'm sorry for doing that simultaniously so not we don't know what was the reason. In case you face akin problem, try both)

Just FYI, it's impossible that OvGME had anything to do with it, as it's basically a file manager/package app, and doesn't do anything with DCS, unless you apply mods. I'm just writing this to prevent new users to get worried.
Cheers!

I refuse to bet against you! Zero chance of winning!
Reading all the threads about the AV issues. Why don't users with these issues start searching the forum and find out who us are without these issue. Please start using Defender and stop wasting money on useless solutions. It's beyond me.

So I switched to Defender in 2019~, when it became actually good according to everyone. That's the reason I forgot about ZA, it was years ago and seemingly it's uninstaller is not that clear. Better to add this tip, that even old AV can disrupt the work.

defender is definitely better these days. in case you have not seen this, here is a screenshot of the exclusions. i saw a YT video of this procedure. another benefit i found was that my computer went from 2 minutes to get to menu to 30 seconds in DCS.
