Calling a Tomcat 'brute force over elegance' and then proceeding to praise an F-4, the literal poster child for the concept...

You misunderstood me. The Phantom falls into the same category as the Tomcat for me. More muscle car than sports car.

But anyway. It is just playful banter. 🤗 Obviously beauty lays in the eye of the beholder. 😊 And most people probably don't differentiate between the jet they find the coolest vs. the most "beautiful". Which is totally fine, since this is just for fun.

Ah, true enough. Anyway, I do like the Tomcat indeed, but I am seriously surprised to see it lead in a poll of good looks, especially seeing some of the other options.

If it was the Eagle that featured in that '80s movie, the poll outcome would have been different I reckon 😉 

 

By the way, I finally managed to make a choice..

Even though I notice I find it really difficult to put all my hate against the regime aside; looking purely at aesthetics, I just had to go for the Russian Flanker (forgive me Viper, Phantom and all the rest, I still love you too 🙏)

Little side story about the F-4 (concerning aesthetics):

While the angled up outer portions of the wings and the angled down tail wings were officially communicated as late design changes (‘double ugly’) without touching the base design there is another thing which turned out different than initially aimed for.

When the F-4 was originally designed it had a ‘straight’ nose in the side view. The official tale says the AN/APQ-72 intendedly introduced a larger dish diameter and therefore required a bigger nose section.

But according to the unofficial annals there was a misunderstanding between McDonnell Aircraft and Westinghouse during development and the larger diameter of the radar dish struck the development crew rather unexpected and since McDonnell was not able/willing to change the whole fuselage only the diameter of the nose section was changed resulting in the typical sloping nose appearance of the F-4.

So…it’s not double ugly. It’s triple ugly!
