Dear Orbx,

Can you please confirm if there are any bombing ranges with bomb circles and other targets on the Kola map?

If not you can use the 476th Range Targets mod with +100 target complexes including bomb circle targets. A must have mod.

Thanks, I know but i was wondering which real world bombing ranges there are on this map? I'm not familiar with the area so no idea where the ranges are.

Vidsel is probably the main one (here's one of its ranges, here's another).

There's a few in Russia but they're mainly for Army & Naval Infantry (there's a few around Luostari/Pechenga)

Awesome! Thanks, that's the sort of thing I was looking for. Those would be good to implement the 476th mod like Fagulha said.

Vidsel definitely - I'll try and dig up a bombing range used for aviation as the one around Luostari/Pechenga are more for things like tanks for the nearby garrison based in Pechenga, Luostari and Sputnik. I guess there's nothing stopping you from using it as a bombing range though.

On the Norwegian side of the border, the only bombing ranges are Porsangermoen and Setermoen.

There are los of smaller ranges as well, but thay are mainly for infantry use (up to C.G. 84mm). There is also a surface-air and surface-sea missile range at Andøy (page 221-222 in the PDF above).

Halkavarre is the one the air force uses. Setermoen is army only. Except maybe the Bell gunships. Halkavarre is a short flight from Banak ENNA. But doable from Bodø ENBO also.

But the valleys around Setermoen offers some fun flying.

I don't know the specific names of the different areas in Setermoen firing range, but I have personally seen F-16s do strafing runs up there a few years ago, so it is a firing range for aircraft as well. The other firing ranges near Bardufoss AFB (not yet modeled) are only army stuff as far as I know (artillery, tanks and small arms ranges)

So the AG ranges in Northern Norway are Setermoen (two ranges) in Troms (south of Tromsø and Halkavarre just south of Banak Lakselv. Other army ranges are Blaatind north of Bardufoss AB, Mauken east of Bardufoss, these might be open for helicopter doorgunnery.

How are the ranges set up? Setermoen has massive mountains with few flat areas for setting up targets. On Google maps I did find a range control tower in a large valley, but I can't identify any actual targets. I couldn't find any of the other ranges, either.

Forsvarsbygg (the part of the Norwegian DOD that owns the range, and all other military installations in the country) mention that it is prohibited too shoot or drop bombs from planes at Mauken-Blåtind, so I assume that the no shooting part also covers helicopters.

The areas markes "nedslagsfelt" in the maps are the general target areas.  https://kart.finn.no/ (click "Flyfoto" in the upper right corner for aerial photos, and you can find older photos under the "Historiske" menu to the left) has better aerial photos than google maps, so you can use that for finding the targets . They are quite easy to find along the road going east from the range control tower vctpil linked to.

I was asking the CF5 guys today where they used to go for ranges.  One responded with:

"Air to ground range was called Settermoen (sp?) I believe.   Was in a “bowl” in the mountains close to Swedish border"

The ranges are marked on the map.  They would deploy to Andoya and Bardufoss.
