Winger Posted May 2, 2024 Posted May 2, 2024 (edited) Hey community, this has been a sideshustle. And it was fun while it lasted. My main job has brought new responsibilities that require even more of my time and do not leave any room for something like this. I will remain part of the Flightsim community as well as the DIY community. Keep building Rhinos my friends. Its such an awesome device and you will love it so much - that i can promise! Hiob Posted May 13, 2024 Posted May 13, 2024 (edited) Hey, happy customer here. Bought this Kit from @Winger and build it without (noteworthy) problems. Everything fittet well and the Stick works like a charm. Great alternative if you don't want to wait a year for your pre-assembled Stick. Some disclaimers: You should be comfortable with DIY in general and know how to use common tools. Even though the parts are of great overall quality, it is 3D-printed in the end, which means every now and then, you might need to refine a hole with a drill or look past a small imperfection (every one of which that I encountered was only on the inside and not of technical relevance). And many thanks to Winger for his patient support (I had a question ot two.... which honestly I could have figured out on my own with a little more patience or rtfm...) TheoreticalApex Posted May 13, 2024 Posted May 13, 2024 Any chance shipping to the USA would be an option in the future? Your work looks excellent! I want to build the Rhino kit but I am more at a comfort level of assembly+wiring when it comes to DIY. Unfortunately I don't have the fabricating skills, whether it be 3D printing or metal work to be able to take the whole project on myself, so your kit would be perfect.
Winger Posted May 13, 2024 Author Posted May 13, 2024 Sure, can ship to USA. Costs around 48,- for shipping. Kit comes mostly preassembled. Gimbal is completely done. Power wiring is also pre done. You only need some drops of super glue and basic tools like allen keys and a cordless screwdriiver for the 40 housing screws. AND some patience.

Gadreel Posted May 27, 2024 Posted May 27, 2024 Hi, I bought the DIY-Kit from @Winger and built the Rhino myself. I did not want to wait forever and building the Rhino myself was a satisfying experience. Because I don't have a 3D printer the DIY-Kit was the perfect solution for me. Because I already knew @Winger and his expertise I was confident to be successful. I'm very happy! Thanks @Winger for answering every question I had while I was building. 4
Winger Posted May 27, 2024 Author Posted May 27, 2024 Thanks Gadreel, I am happy everything went so smooth. Happy "Forceful flying" now;) 1
friese01 Posted May 30, 2024 Posted May 30, 2024 I bought the last "complete" built from @Winger! Now available kits are DIY-Kits but are exactly the same thing - only difference: winger put the parts of the DIY-Kit together and I bought the whole thing as a "used" unit on a online market place. I am very happy with the DIY Rhino and would not go back to a spring centered base like my previous Virpil CM3 or similar. The gain of immersion is just beyond words. You can really feel the haviness of an aircraft, the forces that are "leaning" against the control surfaces. I mostly fly the F-14 (and in future the F-4). Especially when you are approaching high AOA in the F-14 you will be "reminded" by the shaking of the stick that you are near critical AOA. In the F-4 you can really feel it is a flying brick - it feels heavy and not as responsive in the controls as a lighter aircraft. I only took the Huey for some short spins: and the absence of a recentering spring force is just great. You do not have to fight the spring of a "normal" base like a for instance a Virpil, Thrustmaster or Winwing base even with the force trim on. just recenter it and you'll regain precise controls at the very point you need it to. All in all: I can strongly recommend the Rhino as a DIY-Kit! 3

Supernova-III Posted June 6, 2024 Posted June 6, 2024 @Winger Hello, could you please explain the price -- why is it that high?
Winger Posted June 6, 2024 Author Posted June 6, 2024 (edited) 1 hour ago, Supernova-III said: @Winger Hello, could you please explain the price -- why is it that high? Hi, its a combination of: Time to print - Gimbal is 100% PETG-CF full material and Housing is very densely printed PETG. Power cost. Had to buy the machine that prints it. I am using very good printers to ensure very good quality of prints. Machine wear and tear. Material price (Filament, Leather for boot...) Recherche effort to find all parts. Labor for preasembly. Gimbal comes preasmbled. Internal power comes pre crimped and preassembled. All fans come preassembled. (have to crimp on proper connectors, cut wires to length). Leather boot comes pre sewed and partially pre fitted. I made a supplementary manual that adds some of my findings during assembly of my unit. Shipping and handling cost of all parts to my address Shipping and handling - I am not simply throwing everything into a box thou:) AI had to buy some tools to do proper crimping and so on. All that needs to be factored in thou. And last but not least. Besides of me loving the Rhino and thinking that every simmer should really experience it and IMHO its almost as revolutionary as flying in VR for the first time - I want and have to make some money off of it thou. Its a side hustle and i have to pay taxes. I hope that calrifies? Everyone is free to get his own printer, source the parts himself and do it yourself. All data is openly available including BOM and assembly guide. S! PS: IF i forgot something i will add later Edited June 6, 2024 by Winger 2
Hiob Posted June 6, 2024 Posted June 6, 2024 Hey, I‘d like to chime in, as I bought the Kit from Winger, even though I am capable of 3D-Printing the parts myself. The Kit is a nice way to get going, for it is complete and completely spares you the hustle to source everything yourself. The printed parts are of good quality, especially the more delicate parts like the gimbal, core and stick connector are of excellent quality. Even though, in the meantime I have tinkered so much with the Kit and design and replaced half of the parts - I don’t regret paying 500 bucks in the slightest. Building the Kit myself got me going, gave me a ton of ideas and just a lot of fun. I‘m currently in the process of building a FFB conversion for my pedals, based on the motor kit from VP and what I learned by assembling the Rhino. I also doubt, that I could have sourced everything myself for 500 bucks without spending days in researching. 3 "Muß ich denn jedes Mal, wenn ich sauge oder saugblase den Schlauchstecker in die Schlauchnut schieben?"

kaltokri Posted June 6, 2024 Posted June 6, 2024 1 hour ago, Supernova-III said: @Winger Hello, could you please explain the price -- why is it that high? I did the Rhino by myself. I had a lot of help from Winger and mabo1972. I printed all housing parts with a Artillery Sidewinder X1. Finding all the needed parts like screws, connetors etc. is a lot of work. Often it is hard to see if the part you found in the internet is really the one you need. All these different kind of screws are insane. You will have a lot of shipping costs and sometimes you buy the wrong stuff. You need to buy some tools if you don't have it, like a 3D printer, thread cutters, crimping pliers etc. If you don't like to build the Rhino yourself, just buy it from walmis. But you have to wait about a year. If you are a maker, have all needed tools (like a 3D printer) and like the challenge, build it yourself. All you need is available in Git repositories out there. And walmis send the motor kit quickly after ordering. If I had to start all over again, I would get the set from Winger. It saves a lot of time and nerves. And since Winger does all this for you, his price explains itself. 1 SYSTEM: Mainboard MSI MEG X570 | CPU Ryzen 7 5800X @ 4.5 GHz | RAM 64 GB @ 3200 MHz | GPU GIGABYTE RTX 4090 | 1 TB SSD | Win 10 x64 DEVICES: ASUS 27" LCD | TrackIR 5 | LukeClip | Quest 3 | PointCTRL | Virpil HOTAS | MFG Crosswind | TableMount MonsterTech MODULES: To much to list. But I stopped buying more, because of too much bugs in e.g. A-10C(II). @ED: Fix the bugs and I spend money on modules again. Promised. PROJECTS: OpenFlightSchool: DE / EN

Cheers The 24V variant would even be powerful enough to not only power the rhino base but also FFB pedals or collective if you ever deceide to add either to your rig. TelemFFB supports Base, PEdals and Collective. There is multiple DIY projects on Pedals. MFG Crosswinds conversion by Hion for example, TM TPR Conversion by Smitty or TM TRP conversion by Flydoc 1
