Hey I was just thinking, is there any chance of seeing plugins to use with blender to work with DCS, I see all this stuff about 3dsmax, however I was wondering if they would allow blender tools as well. This would allow ANYONE to make models for DCS, not just those with deep pockets for a 4000 dollar piece of software.

well..if there is an exporter from .blend to .3ds , then I don't see why not ... check around, there is bound to be a freeware exporter.

...also, isnt there a free version of 3dsmax that you can use for this?...GMax or something ?

Posted (edited)

Gmax is the free version of 3DSMax but you still have to export the file in 3dsmax...

EDIT: its not that easy.... the tools that you need to export in to DCS/LOfc only works with 3DSmax...7 i think.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

I had some 3D modeling experience (basic) for games years ago, and I know that some exporting tools screw up with materials properties of subobjects. Many of the free tools avaiable glue all subsbojects together. Be carefull and check it out.

3D max is pretty much an industry standard. Each of the big game developers have their own preferences for each software. Some us Max, others use Maya, softimage is also used. On the plus side though several formats can be exported into 3dmax to use. The principle modeling can be done literally in any package and then all the optimization and features related to exporting for the game (animations) can be done in Max.

Heh, can we get some Zbrush or Mudbox plugins ? :D

well of course ed will use max, but i dont think every modder can buy such an expensive software. So blendersupport will be one of the best things to keep dcs alive....

I use Sftimage modtool, which is the free version of XSI, which is made by the same peeps as 3ds max [autodesk] so its easy to import into 3DS Max.

the question isnt importing to 3dsmax, the question is how to work on dcs projects without having a copy of 3dsmax....

You can always work with other people who do have the software.

I think your missing the point still. It isn't right to require people to use 4000 dollar software when there is free software out there that will do the job if plugins are provided for it. Requiring 3dsmax is a great way to discourage those who cant afford max from working on models....

you need 3dsmax to import it into a lom file...

ED hasn't made any tools for any other software.

pretty much the whole point of this conversation is to request tools for other programs for example blender....

I have brought this subject up in other forums. Blender is a good and powerful, and yes, FREE software. It definately has the power to do what is needed in any sim, even DCS. And yes, the problem right now is that there are no plugins available for it.

Tigrou's Grippen was done in blender and filtered through Max. As far as I know his next project is going to be done the same way. But, he has both Blender and 3dsMax.

It is going to take a fan of Blender who is also a programmer who is also a fan of LOMAC or DCS to take a stab at writing an exporter for Blender. In addition, it will take ED releasing the 3rd party goodies for DCS before that can be done. But for LOMAC that already exists for 3dsMax 7 and 8.

It is my opinion, based on the success of VNAO and the mods we released and also on the Grippen by Tigrou, Simmod's A-10, and many others, that releasing better SDK's and such for DCS can only promote better sales for DCS itself. Hopefully someone in charge at ED will realize that.

Thanks,

Max

Maybe ED doesn't have the time and resources to make plugins for Blender/Mod tool..

Well for right now, I would suggest the best strategy for the people who are using other software other then 3dsmax is to find someone with 3dsmax and have them export it for you. The whole process would not take more then a few minutes.

Regretfully I have to agree with prior comments and say that I also feel the developer should release the plugings for the most popular 3d software out there.

ED currently still has a tight grip on their 3d content and is only allowing new models through them. So if that is the case, it is to their benefit to provide easy access to 3d tools OR give no restrictions as to what format the models are submitted. My opion
