I have recently noticed that when I'm flying helicopters and get close to the ground after taking off that I get sudden FPS drops/stuttering. This is happening while I'm the only unit on the map as well. It will show me getting 180 fps and then suddenly drop to 140, 120, etc, while stuttering. It's so bad it's made me crash while practicing autorotation. The FPS counter will show me being above 100 but it's like it's gone down to less than the 10. I've tried playing around with my settings such as using all different DLSS versions and it's done it every single time on the Syria and Kola map. Note, I haven't tried it in the Caucus map though. I have a pretty beefy PC so I'm at a loss as to whether it's DCS itself or something else. I've tried disabling the launcher, using max performance power settings, and deleting fxo and metashaders, but it didn't make a difference either.

I just turned grass completely off and as soon as I descended to a couple hundred meters off the ground during an autorotation on the Kola map the simulator turned into a slideshow and wouldn't recover. Even on the next flight it was a slideshow as soon as I started. The only thing I noticed was my RAM usage was fluctuating between 26 and 28gb out of 32gb. Could I be running out of RAM?

VRAM more likely. The grass and clutter settings don't make a difference for me whatever I set the slider in real time using Taz1004's No Pause mod. And my computer is 10+ years old.

It's not VRAM. I just did an experiment on the Caucus map which is traditionally the best performing and I was only using 9GB of VRAM (Out of 16) and 22GB of Ram (Out of 32) and yet as soon as I was few meters off the ground the stuttering/slideshow started happening.

They did something in the last patch it seems. Someone claim they did the optimisation backwards. I think I might revert to the previous version and test, as my system seems to run worse now.

I am getting the exact same issue ever since the most recent update released. The big map update had seemed to fix a ton of issues I had been having. Making the game actually enjoyable. But then, they just had to mess with it and undo all the performance improvements they had just made. I had a memory lock up so bad, in the multiplayer menu, I was getting 5 FPS.

Hello,

Same for me, in vr. Impeccable FPS then without knowing why, horrible stutters, then the game resumes normally. It's incomprehensible.
And the worst is that the phenomenon does not occur in the most graphically loaded areas.

This is a problem that I no longer had for a long time.

What is that?

Could not find anything about it in the download section nor the forum.

Would appreciate a lead, thank you.

Hi! It's a mod that prevents the game from pausing when you look at the briefing, (LAlt+B?), Message History, etc. Even when you press Escape it won't pause the game. Very handy when you are trimmed or on autopilot and just want the game to continue if you need to read the briefing or whatever.

A a lot ctd / stutter in multiplay dcs today

Its not always a DCS issue and to imply it is is just wrong.

Please attach your dcs log from a session where you have stutter and let us know your system spec, your dxdiag would be the best thing to add.

thank you

using max performance power settings

That doesn't help with stuttering unfortunately. If you want to eliminate the power plans as possible culprit, you need to disable the service entirely. Just open the services in windows, find the power service (or the translation for your region) and disable it. Don't worry, you can't break anything and you can turn it back on as easily the same way.

Personally I have very good experiences with doing that, so I strongly encourage it.

(A little bit of background on why that helps. The power service makes A LOT of interrupt requests to examine the powerstate and load on various system components. Every IRQ is a possible stutter. Unfortunately it doesn't stop doing the interrupts even on high performance settings.)

Still need your dcs.log file from the "C:\Users\username\Saved Games\DCS\Log" directory, may just be a text document named "dcs" if Windows is hiding file extensions. Make sure this is taken after you experience stuttering issues, if possible, without starting the game again.

You only have 32Gb of RAM, and your preload radius is quite high, as well as a few other things you could drop. The below information is from the DCS log analyser:

Advice

  • Change your pagefile to at least 32768 MB (initial size).

Tuning Tips

  • Turn off SSLR.
  • Turn off SSAO.
  • Set Preload Radius to max. 60000.
  • Disable civil traffic.

Tuning tips are recommendations for better FPS based on your CPU, GPU and RAM. They might result in slightly decreased display quality.

Looking at your page file the log says 9,216Mb which would imply a Windows system managed one. You should add a custom page file with an Initial and Max values of 32768, click Set, Apply, and restart your PC. Make sure that the page file is created on your fastest SSD (preferably NVMe), and that you remove any other page files so you only have a single one.

👆good advice

SSLR and SSAO are gfx options that in most scenarios are barely noticeable unless you specificaly look out for them.

I would add, since you mentioned that you have generally 180 fps and then dips, try limiting the fps to 120 upfront. There is diminishing returns past that (it's not a fps shooter after all) and it may open up some breathing room for your GPU and make dips less noticeable.

And if possible don't use the ingame limiter, but either Afterburner/Riva or the GPU driver.

This game is phenomenal. I'm playing a game in VR with DLSS in balanced (NVIDIA 4090), in full screen. The stutter hell begins. I stop the game, I remove the full screen, I put in DLSS in quality... Then NO stutters. Same scene, same units (in Syria), same plane (F-4).
I'm sure that if I start again the stutters will come back 🤣. This game is completely incomprehensible.

Hello,

I tried  (Thanks Phamtom711) the setting Max FPS to 90 FPS (and 90 Hz with my PICO 4), and it's much better! I didn't pay attention to this setting.

Based on some testing, I think you fixed my problems! Sim has been running smoothly so far, the past couple of days. I really appreciate your help.

Just reducing the options, I set the window paging file and set 512 textures in dcs
reduce preload radius, scenery etc etc
ctd is improved, but the multiplayer performance is still wrost.
recommend turn off ssao sslr  something unstable new techolgy

Hello,

I also suffer flying helicopters that I get sudden FPS drops/stuttering with the latest update.

With DCS 2.9.8.1214.1 I did not have any problems at all.

I did not change anything in my settings and cleaned everything several times.

Only fly single player. I have not got the best pc but It was running just fine in the DCS 2.9.8.1214.1

I shall try the above things.

I think I go back to DCS 2.9.8.1214.1

So, I just installed 96gb of DDR5 6000mhz ram and I'm having this issue again with the same settings I used that seemed to fix my issue temporarily. Lots of stuttering, fps drops, flying low level on Kola with the Chinook. Going to test in other maps. It is possible it is happening when I alt-tab out of the game and then go back to the game, but I will keep testing to try to nail down if it's an issue on all maps, if its alt-tab out of the game, or something else.
