Hi, and welcome to the MiG-21bis WIP (work in progress) thread.

Some time ago i wanted to model the mig-21 for LOMAC, after some hours spent on modeling i needed more detailed pictures for further progress. Then i stumbled upon this site: http://home.planet.nl/%7Efran2233/ .

I figured why reinvent the wheel, when i could use his model for integration in LOMAC. So i emailed the author (Johan Franken) and here we are. I must say the model already looked gorgeous when i received it, but i plan to (and am in the process of) redoing/editing/fiddling the model to make it look even more splendid.

-TODO

*model interior engine

*redo cockpit

*redo pilot

*cleanup canopy /editing

*stuff i forgot

*texturing modified parts

*animating parts (has to be done after the model is 'done')

-Questions / Suggestions to everyone / person(s) adressed

*Be critic if the model / other stuff isnt accurate.

*The way the materials/textures are used isn't that important at this point

My thanks go out to Johan Franken who offered his great model for (hopefully) an inclusion in future addons for LOMAC, and FLANKER for his great mig pictures. Ofcourse also to ED and Chizh for this new subforum.

Some crappy renders:

I also like the MiG-21, but it's hard to find a place for it in a simulator about modern air combat, when Russia and Ukraine have both removed it from service. The closest I could come to finding a place for it comes from a recent Air Forces Monthly article on the Georgian air force:

Maybe we could make it into a Georgian fighter?

Well, allochtoon...

The model is a bit plastic, but... it looks cool. Though, u should make it a bit more shabby.

2 swingkid: it doesnt seem to be mi8. I guess its a mi14. Look at its bottom.

SK, the F-5 and F-4 is included as part of the list of AI planes for the United States, even though neither jet is used for combat purposes. I think we can bend the 'modern' air combat thing a little ;)

Besides, a MiG-21 would make good gunnery practice if nothing else. The only concievable problem that would absolutely prevent it from being integrated into Lock On's list of AI jets would be that the weapons it uses - i.e. the Atoll, etc. - are not already in place in Lock On. And since rear-aspect seekers in missiles are not modelled in Lock On AFAIK (maybe the SA-9/Strela 1 is, I'm not sure), that may also be a challenge too.

So as insurance, I hope that someone also models an Atoll just to be safe ;)

Oh, and *definitely* ask bout that Mirage 2000D model as well - it looks stunning.

Did some work on the engine inner parts (old version).

Thanks peter for the link :]

Dont worry about the materials used, i am concentrating on the modeling now, materials and textures will have final priority. Same goes for the way the picture is rendered, i could use Brazil to make the image look more lifelike, but that is useless for a game model WIP screen.

I like the Mirage idea too :) While the MiG-21 isn't exactly the most crucial aircraft to add to LOMAC it is, and always will be, a true classic. Alochtoon, the model looks very good, you may want to give the intake and the pitot tube 'stub wing' sharp leading edges though. They seem to be razor sharp in real life.

As for missiles, the MiG-21Bis (the model is a Bis, isn't it?) should be able to use the R-60, AFAIK. Ah, tomcat1974 beat me to it ;)

Thanks :) am i correct when i say the rear landing gear wheels rotate independantly inwards according to the point where the wheels connect? <-- When the gear is "going up".

All looks very good and very very nice.

What modellingtechnique u use on this Mig-21 ?

And whats the current polycount ?

Any chanse of a seeing a wireframe ?

Thanks :) , im having a hard time animating the rear wheels properly :(

50.800 polys, but i can cut alot away still, but i have to add a new pilot object, and i can move the detail level a bit at some places.

I mostly use cilinders, cones, and an occasional box.

Good luck with modeling!

Everything is animated properly, except the rear wheels. I only hope someone can show me how the rear wheels retract. I want to do it realistically.

This looks awsome!

I'd like to fly it in Lock-On. Mind you, MiG-21 is one of the most produced/used aircraft and it can do over mach2.

Thanks :)

Practice makes perfect.

Pick a plane to model (i saw that civilian planes could be useful) start modeling it, and create a thread for it, and i will give tips and pointers.

Smoothness is acquired by putting the vertices at the right spot. But the basic shape of any plane is an cilinder, for the wings it could be boxes. Just start modeling :)

Ok.

Am busy with a CT-114 tutor.

Again, A bit late on my part, but that is AMAZING work! Just by a quick visual, your model looks basically done and read-to-go! The skin looks pretty realistic, but some more weathering would be a great addition to give it that good ol' Russian Iron look. You should ask Mig-mag or Mitch to skin for ya...Their work is phenomenal.

So are you planning on actually making the cockpit from scratch, and working out All the cockpit functions and systems?? Is that even possible with your modeling tool? I mean you could model the exterior model and plane, But doesnt undertaking the systems, huds, and ect warrant extensive coding that only the Dev's can touch?

Anyway, Glad to see the Bison on work...hope to see more updates soon!!

Looking simply amazing, but do you believe that we will be able to fly one of this someday in Lomac?

I don't understand anything in russian except Davai Davai!
