Hmm "snake oil" is a standard test for certificate creation - "snakeoil.dom" is obviously not a valid address ...seems like someone was confused a bit and installed a test certificate? ;)

This message usually appears when you open an SSL connection to a server.

You can recognise an SSL link by the https:// instead of the http:// in front of it.

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, which is designed to transfer confidential data over the Internet (such as credit card numbers and passwords) without others being able to intercept it.

You can find more info about this on this page

The dialog isn't the thing that bothers me, it is this......

E = ca@snakeoil.dom

CN = Snake Oil CA

OU = Certificate Authority

O = Snake Oil, Ltd

L = Snake Town

ST = Snake Desert

C = XY

It's quite clearly completely fictional, Eagle trying to cut corners?

As Caretaker pointed out:

The SnakeOil CA certificate is just the default certificate shipped with an Apache SSL mod for testing.

Usually a web site will contract a REAL CA (Certificate Authority) and get a unique Certificate.

Nothing sinister - just ED hasn't yet applied for a Certificate.
