The Model Viewer will not load. I've tried both the built-in viewer in both folders, and the most recent build of the stand-alone viewer.

The built-in viewer shows this error in Windows Event Viewer:

Faulting application name: ModelViewer2.exe, version: 2.9.17.12034, time stamp: 0x685d4d8d
Faulting module name: ModelViewer2.exe, version: 2.9.17.12034, time stamp: 0x685d4d8d

Faulting package-relative application ID:

There are no logs for it in the DCS Logs folder. Otherwise, there's no errors. it simply doesn't load. I've tried:

  • Updating video drivers
  • Updating and repairing the VC++ Redistributable
  • Repairing the main DCS installation
  • Clearing and rebuilding the shader folders

When that didn't work, I downloaded the most recent standalone version. When launching it gives an error that three DLL files are missing (Scene, SceneRenderer, and ZLib). If I copy versions from the game's files and try to launch, I now get this error:

What do I need to do to get the viewer working?

Looks like your Antivirus might be removing the files, check your AV log.

Did that, too. Nothing in the AV.

is there a reason you are running from this location?

the EXE that comes with the game is located in folder INSTALL_FOLDER\DCS World OpenBeta\bin

run it from there. the DLLs required are also there.

I've tried it in the DCS install folder, (both bin folders) too. One of the troubleshooting steps I was recommended was copying to another location. No matter what location, the built-in install returns that error in the event logs, but never even starts on the front end.

indeed. i tried running the EXE myself. the screen went black for a few seconds, did not start, and gave a brief error dissimilar to your error. however i found the error in windows events.

Hi,

ive just tried to reproduce but all seems ok for me, there was a slight pause while shaders loaded but then working as normal.

I will ask the team and see what they say

Just to get everything in one place, full details:

Event Viewer Error:

Faulting application name: ModelViewer2.exe, version: 2.9.18.12722, time stamp: 0x687e5a6e
Faulting module name: ucrtbase.dll, version: 10.0.19041.3636, time stamp: 0x81cf5d89

Faulting application path: D:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\DCSWorld\bin-mt\ModelViewer2.exe
Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\System32\ucrtbase.dll
Report Id: bc5e41a2-6eed-4ac5-92bd-c0e2ab94e185 Faulting package full name:
Faulting package-relative application ID:

Troubleshooting So Far:

  1. Tried launch from both \bin and \bin-mt
  2. Reinstalled VC++ runtimes
  3. Updated video drivers
  4. SFC
  5. Cleared shader cache
  6. Removed all aircraft mods
  7. Ran as Admin
  8. Ran from elevated CMD
  9. Ran in compatibility mode (Win7 and Win8)
  10. Tried with local install (generates error about missing DLLs)
  11. Verified no AV alerts or AV quarantining files
  12. Verified File Integrity/Repaired Game Files
  13. Force recreation of Model Viewer cfg file (it does not regenerate)

No logs are being generated by the model viewer itself, and no error is appearing. The mouse pointer simply spins for a few moments then stops, and the only record is in the Windows event logs.

System Info:

  • OS: Win10 Pro x64
  • Video: RTX4090
  • RAM: 64GB
  • Platform: Steam

i tried today again. this time, though it took a hot minute to open, it did finally open. no changes to my computer other than restarting daily. i leave it off during the days i am at work.

@BIGNEWY is onto something about the delay with shaders. i believe clearing those folders improves the performance.

I'll try clearing the shaders again, but I've already done that a couple times now, and it's definitely not just taking a long time to load but is crashing out entirely (as shown by the Windows Event Logs).

No good, still crashing. In addition to the previous Windows Log, this is coming up in the App Logs:
