Celo63 Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 (edited) ... I covered most of it in a toilet! Really? Maybe you should eat more fibre dude. Thats a long stay in a cubicle! Bet your legs were numb after. :megalol: Or was it a real short book? Reminds me of Robert Mason in Chickenhawk, commenting on the toilet facilities in one of the camps in Vietnam. "Real men can s**t in the open, in the middle of a busy camp. Sure, who's gonna watch you wipe your *ss." (Or words to that effect - haven't got the book in hand to quote exactly.) My book suggestions:- Chickenhawk - by Robert Mason Been suggested already but its such a good read so I mentioned it again. Goshawk Squadron - by Derek Robinson Novel/Fiction but very well written. Both hilarious and tragic. About WW1 aviators over the western front in 1918. Ghost Force, The secret history of the SAS - by Ken Connor Factual and well written. Covers most theatres of operation since SAS was formed. Edited September 2, 2009 by Celo63 1
Griffin Posted September 2, 2009 Posted September 2, 2009 "You were guaranteed the most uncomfortable crap in the world there, and not just because they didn't have any seats. In the winter, the rims were ice cold, and in the summer they were so hot they scalded your arse. Hovering the Apache was a doddle compared to hovering over the tin rim." Ed Macy - Apache :D Army really makes you appreciate your own comfy toilet. Sorry for off topic.

Grayghost01 Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Can anybody recommend a certain book about A-1 Skyraider missions in Vietnam? "Cheating Death" by George J. Marrett, about flying rescue mission as Sandy in Laos and Vietnam. Right now I've finished "Vulcan 607", and I'm waiting for "Apache Dawn" I've read "Apache" and "Joint Force Harrier" both great non-fiction books. Browsing the thread I noticed also "Foxbat", read that too, great novel :pilotfly: A book I found quite good about Vietnam War is "A Hundred mission north" by Ken Bell. 1 Bye Danilo Though I Fly Through the Valley of Death ..I Shall Fear No Evil. joey45 Posted September 23, 2009 Author Posted September 23, 2009 If you've read 'Vulcan 607' then you should read 'Pheonix Squadron'... I'm thinking of getting 'Apache Dawn' and if I see it in the book shop then I'll buy, cos I need a new book. 1 The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. ED Team JimMack Posted September 24, 2009 ED Team Posted September 24, 2009 Just read Ed Macy's new book "Hellfire". As good as his previous book "Apache", A lot of interesting info on helo tactics in Afghanistan. When I get a moment to spare I want to create a series of missions similar to those he experienced in Helmand province. Having problems? Grayghost01 Posted September 27, 2009 Posted September 27, 2009 If you've read 'Vulcan 607' then you should read 'Pheonix Squadron'... I'm thinking of getting 'Apache Dawn' and if I see it in the book shop then I'll buy, cos I need a new book. I'm planning to buy Phoenix Squadron as soon as it goes out in paperback (both for price and space reason...) and I'm waiting for Apache Dawn. If you haven't yet read Apache by Ed Macy, well i say "Buy it now!" It's been some time since I read something so powerful. Besides it has a nice feature, on the pages you'll find a symbol, such as a camera. Well you go to the website, and insert the page number where you find that, to find pictures, graphics, clips and so on. A great book. Shez Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 I didn't see these two mentioned. ED Team JimMack Posted October 5, 2009 ED Team Posted October 5, 2009 (edited) I didn't see these two mentioned. Vipers in the Storm by Kieth Rosenkranz Diary of a Gulf War Figher Pilot Fighter Combat Tactics and Maneuvering by Robert L Shaw I do not think that Fighter Combat Tactics and Maneuvering by Robert L Shaw has been mentioned is that everyone studying air combat knows about it! It is the BIBLE, everyone has to read it. I have often thought that Shaw should do an update, in the light of Gulf and Balkan wars, but on re-reading I feel it is not necessary as he had already covered the situations. The only amendment I would suggest is the introduction of off-boresight missiles and aiming systems. This does change some advice on ACM. Edited October 5, 2009 by JimMack more info Having problems? Griffin Posted November 8, 2009 Posted November 8, 2009 Gents, it's time to buy a new book. I have narrowed the options to these books: Low Level Hell - Hugh L. Mills Stuka Pilot - Hans-Ulrich Rudel Hellfire - Ed Macy Which one would you suggest? Or do you know some other one that I really shouldn't miss?
joey45 Posted November 8, 2009 Author Posted November 8, 2009 I would go for Hellfire. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. Griffin Posted November 10, 2009 Posted November 10, 2009 Ok, thank you gents. Will see if it's available.
mvsgas Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 I just started to reed this book and wanted to share; "Fighter Pilot: The Memoirs of Legendary Ace Robin Olds" Very good so far. and while I'm at it: "American Patriot: The Life and Wars of Colonel Bud Day" Amazing story, the guy survived a ejection were the chute did not open! and as a POW in Vietnam. "Biohazard:The Chilling True Story of the Largest Covert Biological Weapons Program in the World--Told from Inside by the Man Who Ran It" Thank God the cold war stayed cold. "Marine Sniper: 93 Confirmed Kills" Talks about Sergeant Carlos Hathcock Vietnam tours. "Boyd: The Fighter Pilot Who Changed the Art of War" Talk about Col John Boyd, very influential on the design of the F-15/16/18 "Helmet for My Pillow: From Parris Island to the Pacific" After seeing the HBO series The Pacific I had to check it out, very good. "Mirage III vs MiG-21 (Duel)" Small book. Not the most detailed but some interesting info, not sure how accurate. Funny, all this years reading about aircraft, and never noted how little armament some of this aircraft would carry. MiG-21F-13 gun could only carry 30 rounds! insane. 1 To whom it may concern, I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that. Thank you for you patience. Many people don't want the truth, they want constant reassurance that whatever misconception/fallacies they believe in are true..
bumfire Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 I have hundreds of military orientated books, I joined the MBC years ago and they kept sending me books that I didnt order, at first I didnt worry and just paid for them, but after a while I ended up with a library of new books in my house, with atleast 90-95% unread. I cancelled the club, but I am still left with books that I will never ever get around to reading, I will probably throw them all out when I get around to renovating two rooms next year, as I need to knock down walls and add a new attic entrance, thus all the boxes of books that are stored in one of those rooms will have to find a new home or will probably find themselves being recycled as bog roll.

CyBerkut Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 "Marine Sniper: 93 Confirmed Kills" Talks about Sergeant Carlos Hathcock Vietnam tours. An *excellent* book! Sgt. Hathcock was a special guy, and a real patriot. The story about the mission to take out an NVA General was worth the price of the book, all by itself. If you don't want to bother with selling them off, you might want to consider donating them to a library. That's a higher value way to recycle them. ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] There's no place like 127.0.0.1
