Out of these three I feel the most likely to become anything tangable is SOW simply because Oleg and his team have delivered before. Jet Thunder seems to have halted and fighter ops apart from a flight model pre render hasn't had much to say in 2009. Anybody following these sims?

Fighter ops community seems to be shrinking or it's just very small. Only a handful of peope bother to post anything on their boards.

Vaporware? All speculation obviously but we were getting plenty of content in the early shark days.

Thoughts on these sims?

Storm of War is going on, and progress seems to be very good. This october, Oleg said.

I'm not following the development of Fighter Ops or Jet Thunder, but it really seems that or they're doing good progress without letting anyone know or they're a bit stopped. Not sure which one is true, but I'm hoping for the first.

J.T. is being made by an international team that have full time jobs and their funding is Limited.

F.O. not sure

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

From the Fighter Ops website:

"On behalf of all of the Fighter Ops team members and staff, I'd like to wish all of the forum members a very happy and safe holiday season and a fantastic new year!

This past year saw many challenges for the FO team, however despite those, significant progress was made and we are in a very good position for some very significant milestones to be blown away in 2010.

We look forward to sharing those with you all in the coming year."

Sounds good to me, I hope it's true.

lol fighter ooops will never be released..

milestones..what mile stones? after 5 years all they have is screenshots and a 20 sec vid....

I admire their effort but i think its totally unrealistic for a part time hobby to make a sim like they want to make in under 10 years...

maybe if they would have made it like seven-G with demo versions ppl wouldnt have given up on them...

but by the looks of the seven-G forum they completely vanished as well..

so all is left is the super-bug for FSX which is due march...and as much as the FM will realistic ..its still..FSX lol...

DCS:A-10? eta on that? and more importantly DCS:Viper eta on that ?

(hehe)

The point is, these other devs are trying to "reinvent the wheel" instead of joining the bandwagon, grab 3rd party tools, sign contract with ED and develop payable addons for DCS.

That isn't even an option now, let alone 5 years ago. I see nothing wrong with having an ambitious project of their own, and I commend them for going after it and not giving up. I can't say whether or not we'll ever get to fly it, but I sure hope so.

Good point.

I would like to know if there was ever a serious request to ED for making payware addons by third party. On the other side if it would go like some addons for FSX with quality varied from bad/worse to great I would not like it.

F.O.: Just give them more time... (yes, waiting is hard...)

SoW: I´m sure we will see it this year. The Publisher doesn`t want to wait any longer(from what I read between the lines from Oleg).

Flyable aircraft developed by third party developers for DCS would certainly be welcomed by me, of course I would prefer if ED had a final say as to what was released so we wouldnt get add-ons like the ones Alphasim releases for FS, where you get a decent 3d model, but no simulation of anything at all...

As for SoW, FO, and JT, I am certain that SoW will be released sometime in the future, JT might, all though I cant really remember hearing anything about it for quite some time, and FO I think is just vaporware... I mean its in its fifth production year and all they have to show are some 3d renders.

But JT and FO are not made by a Dev team that work on it 5 days a week... But by poeple who have a full time job.

Remember there are no tools yet beside terrain plugins for 3dsMAX which is very hard to use (when compared to Strike Fighter series, or FSX). I haven't seen too many new theatres in the works.

Noone knows how difficult it will be to create flight model, clickable cockpits, damage model, etc.

One more thing - diversity is a good thing. There are some people who like DCS, and some who doesn't like it at all. There are many people who doesn't like too hardcore simulators, or maybe they need dynamic campaign for example. While I like DCS and LockOn very much, it's not ultimate simulator for everyone.

Fighter Ops doesn't release anything to the public thats interesting in my experience following the project. They have a special forum for special members that pay special $$$ for special updates. So we don't hear much besides general news every once in a while. That doesn't mean there is no progress just that we don't get to see it. Join the club and that changes, as well as supports the project!

Jet Thunder like FO as Joey pointed out above are run by volunteer teams that work on the project in their spare time. For whatever reason we should support these teams in any way possible as we all know how thin flight sim offerings are these days.

I can't imagine being a flight sim developer spending all this time and money and such a small piece of the software world pie. But I can appreciate and support their efforts which I do.

VRS Superhornets FM for FS9 is better and more detailed than anything else made so far I think for FSX it'll most likely be even better although I think it would be better suited in DCS as a payware addon.

On one side you are right but I think that even DCS should consider getting a global map at some stage to further expand its potential.

Making a realistic flight simulator ain't like dusting crops boy.

I admire the idea of doing all that work in your spare time but i just can't fathom it. 5 years is a long time, I think fo is still a good 5 years away.

as i said VRS are making amazing F-18's i just dont understand why they make them for flight simulator which is by no means a combat sim..

why not make them for DCS? or like seven-g make a new sim?

FSX is pure torture for fighter jets.. u cant drop bombs , do BVR , damage module etc etc..

you have all the functionality detailed 100% in the cockpit but there's nothing to do with it but to fly around form A to B..

so you invest so much on making a perfect F-18 and put it on FSX...what a waste :(

FS9/FSX has bigger user base than DCS, and bigger possible income.

Making complete flight simulator is much more difficult than one aircraft for existing engine.

I'd love to see DCS version though :(

Posted

yes they have a bigger user base of ppl who do not fly fighter jets...

i have no statistics but its not so far fetched to assume that those who buy the VRS superbug for FSX play fighter jet sims like OF and DCS etc..

so basically its more or less the same user base :D

The problem is, they don't have to deal with all the secret data used in combat systems.

In FSX, they don't care if your ECM doesn't work properly or at all. In DCS, this matters. But this info won't be released to anyone, and, unless you guys want to lower the DCS standards, the FSX models are just useless.

Posted

I wouldn't mind if 3rd party developer make an addon for DCS with slightly lower standards than ED. Something like Arneh's Mi-24 for EECH or VRS SuperBug would be nice.

Posted

There's just something that I ADORE about the standards DCS sets. For me that's more important than having different air frames. I understand the desire for more airframes, but I'd rather have one model that's as close to the real thing as possible than 6 that are 50-80%. I don't know why that is and I can't make sense of it, but it seems it almost can't be argued the FM is wrong (you get that NON stop on flight sim forums).

The Hind in EECH is a nice model that's for sure, but it was harder to fly the MI-24 hind in DID's HIND (1997) on realistic than it is in EECH. The hind is a TORQUE PIG and you have to apply major rudder when you apply cyclic. So yeah a nice model, but fly's like something out of FSX.

DCS will no doubt drop the F18 at some point, but if you have the Superbug and you've learned the systems (startup procedure, operanting envelope, landing speeds/stall speeds etc) than you're already ahead of the game and it's time to start dropping bombs.

As much as I love to get into a fight, without a true understanding of the aircraft it makes your teeth dull and flat compared to sharp and pointy.

The thing about study sims which I love so much is you have to sit and study to a certain degree step by step and eventually graduate to certain parts of the game. I spent the first 3 months in Black Shark learning to fly the thing. Seeing what it can and can't do. Sure I fired off some rounds to see some explosions, but flying the thing needs to be second nature before fighting in it.

Anyway no disrespect obviously to those who think different, this is just how I feel on the subject of DCS and third party add ons.

Thats how some of the original sims were created just by people working on their own in their spare time.

That's true, but the level of complexity has grown exponentially in today's sim market compared to the early ones. I think it's a noble cause no doubt, but I'm not putting any mental investment into it as more times than not it will become vaporware.

I can see how third party model builders or moders can get stuff done. They've got 95% of the ground work laid for them. It's tough enough having to model you're own plane with realistic flight dynamics never mind work on a completely new engine with real world environments and to top that off...a combat environment. <--- Combat is probably the toughest thing to try to simulate because it's such a dynamic medium.
