any advice on locking up other helo's with the shval? i was just shot down by a hind's gunner because i couldn't lock on him.

If you have trackir, use HMS to track him and slave shkval to a spot just a bit in front of him.

Line up the shkval in front of his flight path.

Then lock as he flies into it.

If you can't lock and it's on him, he's going too fast and you will damage your laser if you keep trying.

Wait for him to turn toward or away from you, or slow down, then you can lock.

Then only fire vikhrs if hes slowed down, or facing towards or away from you (or about to turn to that aspect).

Fire from < 6.5km if you don't want to waste ammo, because the vikhr needs to do more movement there is higher miss probability at larger ranges.

Vikhr range is your advantage, cannon is the hind and apache advantage, because they are dual seaters and their cannon has a larger turning circle.

That's a question of practice and good eyesight. It is a lot harder to see other aircraft in the air in real life too (IRL I've managed to not see whole airliners that were just a couple kilometres away until they radioed ground and I realized they were right there on the tarmac of the airport I was looking at...).

You need to practice your eyes to spot that tiny movement that'll give a camoed target away - like when it passes a building that has a different color and suchlike.

Though it's relevant to collision avoidance for glider pilots, it mentions some interesting facts and scan patterns.

Normally I'm pretty good at it, in the real world. Play a lot of senario paintball. Commo is just as important as the marker you are shooting. Also do really well in shooters. But, in this game it's hard for me. Not sure why, but I refuse to turn lables on.

My advice is to stay as low as possible, other planes are far better to spot when they are versus the sky instead of the ground. Then, make sure you are in a tactical position. In other words, the chance of spotting a hind 360 degrees around you is far smaller compared with 90 degrees for example. Using the Shkval to search for hinds often keeps you busy till they fire at you, so only use the Shkval when you are sure they are at like 10 degrees on your horizon.

In case there is a group of hinds, hit and run is pretty much the only way to kill them all. Kill one, and run (they will be in range shortly after you killed one). Run till they turn away from you and then go for the second one. Also, the Hind is a tough one, so shooting two Vikhrs is not a luxury.

When you are under fire, there is not much you can do (besides ejecting). Flying at max speed on a 90 degrees angle with the hind will give you the best chance of survival.

Before shkval lean in with trackir or zoom in key. Then scan around in the zoomed view. You do lose gen sit aware but if you hover you can focus in one direction without too much issue. Even for ground targets I usually scan before bothering with shkval

Sometimes I use ALT+F1 for open cockpit, then Shift+* for full zoom, and CTRL+F9 for TrackIR precision... but that's not very realistic. I should probably break the habit while I'm still a rookie heheh.

I've tried locking helicopters with the Shkval (no TrackIR here :(), but in the end fighter pilot takes over - reset Shkval, switch to cannon: it's dogfight time :D!

Actually works if you act fast, but when the enemy is a bit too far for aiming manually, I end up using Vikhr. Problem with these is they usually only work in head-on or if you're chasing him. Every single time I launched a Vikhr on a chopper flying perpendicular to mine, it always missed.

True.... your pretty lost when flying without those views.

Best thing (IMO) put the zoomview on a joystickslider and use it as "binocular"...just "overwatch" the horizon and you will see very small "dots"

whick will be huge hinds when they are close...just look out for "small dark pixelmistakes", choppers in more than 10km are not bigger than 1 or two pixel ;-)

Its very importent to spot them before they spot you ! if its not working out like that - go low and fast, try to make hooks like a rabbit -flying straight is your death !

There are two types of fighter pilots - those who have, and those who will execute a magnificent break turn towards a bug on the canopy . . . .

That's why I usually carry gunpods on inboard pylons :) For the long shots I use... wingmans! Proper formation, nice ambush and Hinds go down like in a 'Deer Hunter'. Even Apaches get busted in no time. Thinking ahead and flight management FTW!

I got my CH throttle ministick set up quite nicely and I can now shoot down helicopters just following them manually with Shkval if locking doesn't work for some reason. Of course it's not the same as if I had locked, but slightly missing is no problem if I shoot two missiles at once. It's enough to bring down a chopper if the missiles manage to get close enough to blow.
