504MrWolf Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 What is it with ED using Mitchs rusty A-10 skins ??!! Im pretty sure any god fearing Hog Jock would never step in to a plane with THAT MUCH RUST !! :( The plane whould fall to bits not to mention the fact that the Hog like most planes is consructed from cast/cnc'd titainium and sheet alluminium ! Which doesnt rust hence the reason for using it in aviation. Now im not having a go at Mitchs skins i think they are all fantastic all except the rusty ones he made which just arent REAL, i spent most of my life watching Hogs in the UK during the 80/90s and have just spent the whole day watcing them on UK detachment (photos attached) please feel free to find rust :D So what im saying is do you think this is wrong...if ED are supposed to know planes then you would think they would say "rusted A-10 skins ? are you crazy?!" :D Not really a rant just very confused as the rust has spoilt the A10 campaign for me as looking out to a rusty wing and wingman scares the crap outta me :D yes i can use other skins but the FPS gets real bad :( Anyways let me and ED know what ya think. 355th_Paulie Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 LMAO, yep, I've got to hand you that one, rust on an active jet is quite unappropriate, even the decoys they put up here in The Netherlands have no rust what so ever!!! Thank heavens the 355th have a nice customised DM Hog skin, made by some one who's name I cant remember, without the rusty bits.... :D
TekaTeka Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 There are some pictures of rusty A-10s. OVMorat Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 Russian Planes are rusty. I saw an Antonov land in Germany once and it was a flying chicken coop. Maybe some assumptions were made? :)
Force_Feedback Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 Yes, the author of this post called dirt rust, his mistake. Anyway, dirty planes add to the "realism feel", it makes you feel you're flying a real, used aircraft, instead of some full scale model plane. And planes are always rusty, because aluminium always has an oxide layer (due to the oxygen in the atmosphere rust forms, to protect the aluminium underneath) Creedence Clearwater Revival:worthy:

Cosmonaut Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 I think it must be just a well weathered skin you're talking about as others here have suggested. In a combat situation with a fighter going through many combat cycles then I'd guess they would get pretty dirty. Have a look at these two pics .. those Eagles are definitely in need of some spit and polish. ;) http://www.f15sim.com/images/f15-pic2.jpg http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/f18-fuel.jpg Cozmo. And planes are always rusty, because aluminium always has an oxide layer (due to the oxygen in the atmosphere rust forms, to protect the aluminium underneath) Rust is Ferrum Oxide. It's brown in colour (well it's actually black when it forms, but turns brown/red when it comes in contact with more air). Aluminium Oxide Al(2)O(3) is entirely different compound, it's not rust. It does form protective layer which is very hard to remove (can be done with concentrated alkili), and it is white in colour. Also this protective layer is formed pretty much instantly, since "naked" aluminium is very reactive The bird of Hermes is my name eating my wings to make me tame.

The guys working on them must absolutely love them! :D
504MrWolf Posted April 20, 2005 Author Posted April 20, 2005 Its dirt my friend not rust. I have attached a 1.1 screenshot of one of the offending "rusty" A-10's which for me personally have spoilt 1.1 (all non-rusty Mitch skins are and will allways be amazing) This is from the readme with the original skin : This is a HighRes A-10 Spangdahlem Skin in 1024x1024 . This Skin have a Age and Rusty Effect looks like Real. Have fun... mitchjanssen@yahoo.de So im inclined to believe it is infact supposed to be rust which brings me full circle back to my original empuzzlement of why ED would include not so realistic skins into the game and not even update some on the names - Snow scheme is now actually a Mitch Ferris skins which IMO is not snow :S :( Just my thoughts. www.VVS504.co.uk www.lockonskins.co.uk
Nasder Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 Too me, that looks like dirt to me even though it's suppose to be rust. I feel that it makes the plane feel more used. I don't know how they do it in real life during wartime if they clean the planes as much as they do in peace time. But I can say is this, I like it more than the planes that look brand new without a scratch or dirt. /Nasder, "I came, I saw, I got shot down."
Cosmonaut Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 I dont have 1.1 yet ... but why can't you just use another 3rd party skin of your liking?? Edit: ok I just reread and I see you're concerned with FPS.. but to be honest I dont really notice a difference .. maybe in 1.1 I will though.. who knows. Cozmo. crazyleggs Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 That rust effect Mitch mentions is weathering, not rust. There's absolutely no F N way that I would climb into a jet with actual rust showing. Corroded aircraft do not fly. I think the skin is very realistic.
504MrWolf Posted April 20, 2005 Author Posted April 20, 2005 his readme says Rusty effect though............and ive seen loads of A-10s and they dont look like his skin with his "real" look lol. www.VVS504.co.uk www.lockonskins.co.uk
crazyleggs Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 http://www.af.mil/media/photodb/photos/040302-F-3963C-169.jpg I agree with you that most aircraft do not sport that dirty look. Perhaps his weathering is too brown or "rusty" looking. ;)
coldcrew Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 lol, it is rust! it is dirt! who cares man it's a game

Shepski Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 I brought this rusty skin up in testing but it wasn't changed... there is a great replacement skin on some website that is much better then the one in 1.1 IMO. I'm not at home and am on dial up so I can't search for the better skin... sorry. 1
D-Scythe Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 Wolf, sorry to say, but why don't you d/load a new skin? Or just not use that particular A-10 paint scheme in the game? The A-10 has a lot of others. Personally, I think Mitch's skins are fantastic. Really detailed...
504MrWolf Posted April 21, 2005 Author Posted April 21, 2005 d-Scythe m8 i agree with you on his skins and yes i can add skins of my choosing but the reason for my thread was why ? if ED go for full realism do they add several non-real rusty A-10 skins ? Just puzzling and a little anoying as im a big A-10 fan and have traveled up and down my country trying to catch them on detachments since they left our shores in the early 90's. Also you cant seem to change the skins on the campaign so you kinda stuck with the nasty skins. I have said mitchs are all fantastic and detailed but the rusty ones arent realistic.....im kinda picky with skins i only make real skins never themed, ferris, fun skins and i felt a little dissapointed with Mitch when he made the 'Rusty Series" :) as he allways struck me as a accurate modeler. So i thought id get the word on the street with other A-10 Lockon lovers :D Not a hate mitch thread because i have great respect and started A-10 skinning because of him. I have attached some screenies of my latest A-10 Skin which i think youll find is VERY detailed but caused me FPS probs in 1.0.2 (need to test in 1.1). www.VVS504.co.uk www.lockonskins.co.uk
