It's just too bad the TGP doesn't lock the MAV sensor so I can fire the damn thing; anyone else getting a headache over this or am I losing my my mind?

Learn Force Correlate mode and you can make Mav shots from 9 miles out...I do it all the time with at least a 90% hit rate...its in the manual ;)

I just need my TM Warthog...I'm about all out of hats and shift modes and still need to get the boat switch (for force correlate) and mic on my stick.

I tried to get the mav into force correlate but coudn't get it work, now idea whats going wrong, trying again this weekend, if i could get it work.

Not all of the Maverick models have force correlate mode. In fact I think it's just one model. Maybe two.

I believe only the CCD/TV ones have force correlate...now I can't remember if those are the D, H or K's.

Update

Hi,

I've been learning to use the Maverick for the last couple of sessions and came up with a few questions and general image of the missile operation that I would like to share/discuss. Please, bare in mind that I HAVE read the manual and took closer look at the chapters describing this particular matter. If I turn out to have omitted or misunderstood any important details it was either due to turbulence or my poor incapable brain... ;) Please, feel free to point any errors out to me!

AGM-65 Maverick can be deployed from the A-10C Thunderbolt II using one of the following four methods:

Centroid Tracking

- Point the wagon onto a target with Slew Switch

- Lock will be acquired automatically if conditions are met

- If conditions are not met the seeker will enter Break Lock mode

- Some sources indicate using the Ground Stabilize function with this technique (TMS Aft Short) – see Note 1 at the end of this post

Boresight Tracking

- Maneouver the aircraft to place the wagon onto the target

- Press TMS Forward Short to Lock

- Lock will be acquired if conditions are met

- If conditions are not met the seeker will enter Break Lock mode

- Some sources indicate making the Maverick wagon SPI first with TMS Forward Long and pressing TMS Forward Short as soon as it is done – I don't understand why this could be a better method

Force Correlate Tracking (AGM65H&K only!)

- Press Boat Switch Centre to enter this mode (you can switch the crosshair to black with Boat Switch Forward first to be able to tell when and if the mode has been activated – the crosshair will turn back to white)

- You can now Lock the seeker with TMS Forward Short and Brake the Lock with TMS Aft Short

- Please, see Note 2 at the end of this post

Targeting Pod Tracking (TGP must be carried)

- Point Track a target with the TGP (TMS Forward Short)

- Designate a SPI with it (TMS Forward Long)

- Switch to MAV (Coolie Hat Right Short)

- Set MAV as SOI (Coolie Hat Right Long)

- Slave Maverick seeker to the SPI (China Hat Forward Long)

- Re-designate SPI with the Maverick (TMS Forward Long) – this will be get rid off as it's untrue to “real life” operation

- Lock (TMS Forward Short)

- Lock will be acquired if conditions are met

- If conditions are not met the seeker will enter Break Lock mode

Notes:

  1. The Ground Stabilize function should lock a point on the ground and prevent the seeker from entering Break Lock mode (please refer to the manual, page 340) but it doesn't work for me.
  2. The description of the Force Correlate Tracking method is different in the manual – please, refer to it on page 561 where it says that to Ground Stabilize the seeker you need to press TMS Aft Short. It works the opposite for me.

Apart from the Maverick employment I have found three issues I cannot understand:

  1. What is this mode seen on the screenshot, what does it do and... how did I manage to enter it?

    http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s313/mangaroca2007/Loga%20Signatury%20i%20Gry/ScreenShot_003.jpg

  2. How do I change the default Maverick wagon placement on the HUD? I found two different descriptions of how to do this in the manual (pages 342 vs. 561-562) but none of them work for me.

  3. I had a strange speed bug after playing with the Mavericks – the aircraft Speedometers were not reacting to Speed Brakes, AOA and throttle position. I managed to land only by observing the surroundings and estimating speed. Even after stopping the HUD was displaying a wrong speed readout although the F2 view was telling the truth.

I hope I haven't upset anybody with this post. It is simply my way of sorting my knowledge. Please, correct me if I'm wrong in any of the above.

Thanks for reading!

Losing stabilization after break-lock mode or slewing is correct. I don't see why ground stabilization should prevent it from attempting to lock (which is what causes it to enter break lock mode).

Unless you can reproduce this, then it isn't a bug related to mavericks. You had either a random pitot failure or the pitot froze because you didn't have pitot heat on.

Just a remark: after putting a Mav in force correlate, you can just slew it and it will lock.

I haven't had any luck using TMS forw short to lock without redesignating SPI first. I either use force correlate with minimum slew rate to fire at range, or slew and let the seeker lock itself at 5-6 nm.

Understood. I managed to lock using Boresight only once and I was 1,5 NM away from my target...

I made this post into a handy PDF for easier reading/printing. See attached. Thanks mangaroca!

Nice. I just hope it doesn't contain many errors and if so I hope we get rid of them together. Remember, I'm no tutor, rather a "student" myself... :smilewink:

Sorry to be a pain Guys but can anyone explain these to me:

So im not clear on this. Are mavericks currently not 100% or am I just doing it wrong? Im following the steps here and RTFM (past tense lol) but its still 2 or 3 passes before I get a lock. It sounded like the seeker is supposed to automatically scan and lock when you slew. This doesn't always happen and the short up doesn't do much. It seems like when you find a target with the pod and SPI it the mav should lock when it sees the target or require a short up/slew. I may be way off though but im pretty sure im following SOP here.

That's how it works for me. However, sometimes I get a "CICU ERROR" message at the bottom of the HUD and changing the slew rate doesn't work anymore. I'm not sure if it's a bug or a feature and how to get rid of it...

Apart from that. as posted above, I STILL cannot change the default seeker wagon location on the HUD. I press ADJ ON, slew it low where I want it to be and press ENT on UFC. Then, just to test, I slew it to the side and reset with China Hat Aft Short. BHAM!! The wagon goes back to the original position and laughs at me my setup... :O

You didn't happen to get a big yellow CADC NOT READY message in both MFCDs before that did you? Have any battle damage? Fly low over a target after engaging?

I just had this exact problem myself after overflying a BMP (after strafing its two buddies). The last one shot me. My speed and alt were frozen for the rest of the flight.

CADC means central air data computer BTW. And I just found on page 203 of the manual that you try to reset it, via the CDU. Have to try this next time.

Error appears when you make invalid input for a given function (trying to input letters for slewrate, for example). Just press "clr" on the CDU or front dash input to clear the error message.

deltatango - it turned out to be a random Pitot Heat Failure (!). Check if you have not had the same OR if you have switched your Pitot Heat before take off.

Arclight - thanks! Just as I thought - my fault entirely... ;)

A lock. :P

2 ways to get it: slew the cursor on the target and release. Can be easier to line up with the target, slew the crosshair below it and let it drift onto the target (before it goes to break lock mode, so not too far below it)

Or, get an optical Mav (H&K) and use force correlate. With Mav as SOI, use 'boat switch forw' to ake the crosshairs black, and then set boat switch center again. The crosshairs will stay black for a moment but turn white after about a second. Mav is now in force correlate mode. Slew it anywhere on the ground and it will lock there, regardless of what's beneath the cursor. Crosshairs will become solid (no gap in center) to indicate force correlate lock.

Second takes some practice and low slew rate to get it on a target, but by far gives you longest range.

There is the third way as described, after slaving to SPI: tms forw long, quickly followed by tms forw short, but I don't have any luck with that. Most of the time when it does work, the Mav seems to miss anyway. Given up on that method untill the 'redesignate SPI with Mav' (tms forw long) bug is fixed.

I tried all these ways and they work fine. The correlate way is fantastic for destroying static targets and i i use this now to destroy buildings with ease from a good range.

I don't know how realistic the mav is on this sim but the seeker head to me bobs around way to much for my liking :) it would be nice to have a bit more control. I find i get to target focused and end up flying way to close or even over it.
