Blackrat_UK Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Just thought I would post this up for info of users whom have had a throttle die. I am using an Asus P6T Deluxe V2 and i7 920 based computer, if that makes a difference. My throttle would remain live even with the computer off ie. lights illuminated. I would then kill the power to the computer to switch it all off totally, my throttle lasted three days before the dreaded not recognised device message. I have to say my experience with TM support was a positive one, one phone call and then a prompt email dialogue resulting in an RMA within a couple of days followed by a two week turn around of the throttle. When I got it back I checked to see if the firmware needed any updating, available firmware is 18 my throttle is showing 20 as installed. One obvious difference now is that as soon as Windows shuts down so does the throttle, the lights go out, so it effectively shuts down before the computer itself shuts down. Likewise on boot up, it only lights up as Windows boots up. Seems to me TM expects customers to leave the throttle plugged in all the time and this may be a way of preventing a firmware corruption through a surge. I will be leaving it plugged in and if it pops again, well it pops no big deal I will just have to go through the RMA again. I want a throttle that I do not have to treat like it was made of glass and want it sorted within the warranty. So fingers crossed.

Slayer Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Quick question: Did you plug it into the same port as before or try different USB ports? After the last firmware update mine now powers off for a few seconds when the PC boots and initialises everything but doesn't still turn it off when the PC is powered down :/ Here's hoping also..... sick of unpluging my PC to get it to turn off... Initially in a different port, until I noticed the shutting down, now its back in the same port as before, so I ruled out a different port shutting down. Its already lasted a day longer than before :)
Feed Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Interesting that the firmware is a later version than available through their updater ... I really am unhappy that they aren't being more informative. Their product is so niche, that you'd think they'd have better community support. I agree completely with you, Blackrat - my first throttle went belly-up, but I'm not treating this one any different ... at $400(+), I shouldn't have to baby it.
twobells Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 TM deny there is a firmware 20 so it looks like BlackRat is also a black guinea pig :-) I really hope the throttle holds buddy and desperately waiting myself on the new firmware before plugging in my third unit. ps: is there any way to extract BlackRat's firmware? Ragtag Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 (edited) That's definatly a new firmware. Thanks for the heads up. twobells Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 I have been told it may be possible to back up the firmware in T.A.R.G.E.T any chance u could try BlackRat? Unless I'm remembering something very wrong, I believe when my throttle initially lost firmware (prior to full brick failure), TM sent me a utility to backup/extract the current firmware from the Throttle ... I'll take a look for it when I get home.
Blackrat_UK Posted February 2, 2011 Author Posted February 2, 2011 Well guys, having read in another thread that someone is getting a new board for their throttle I am wondering of there is a hardware change which may will make this firmware a bit awkward. I would suggest patience at this stage rather than risking your throttles.

Slammin Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 In the other thread, the user asked TM if he could just send the circuit board instead of the entire throttle to save on shipping costs and TM agreed to do that instead. Slammin Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 Exactly. I have two Cougar HOTAS's. One developed a problem. Because I had two, I was able to identify the issue to be a failed PCB by swapping the PCB's around. Both were out of warranty. Explaining that to TM, they sent me a knew PCB for $20.00. TM does stand behind their stuff.
