It probably looks the same, only stretched on to a 32" screen. :noexpression:

This. You won't see more of the world around you, unless if you go for higher resolutions than 1080p (1920x1080). I fly 1900x1200 on a 26"screen.

If you want to see more, go multi-screen instead of bigger screen.

I use a 40" Samsung (L87 I think, or F87, something like that), which is 1920x1080 (so 1080P).

A TV gives quite a different colour gamut to a monitor, so some fiddling is required with the colour temperature, contrast and brightness to get your LCD TV to how you want it for gaming.

Previously I have used for LO/LOFC/DCS:BS and now DCS:WH...

  1. Dell 24" Ultrasharp - Excellent clarity etc
  2. Projector 1024x768 native - Brilliant for size, ok for day missions, not enough colour contrast for night missions, nearly lead my flight of 6 25Ts in to a mountain, twice, on the same mission, cos I couldn't see the brown of the mountain against the black of the sky.
  3. Samsung 40" TV - seems best compromise between size and colour resolution.

For my budget etc, the 40" TV is the best compromising option for size & clarity. I'd love a HD projector but having had a projector before and its distinctly average colour reproduction/differentiation, I'm not keen to drop 1500 quid on an experiment!

Best thing about a HD TV is that you get a lot of size at a reasonable resolution that most modern gfx cards can run without too much of a struggle. If you were thinking of bigger monitors, or more, you need a much stronger gfx solution.

Get a good spec TV, you won't regret it (don't get a cheap spec TV, it'll be awful).

42" is the way to go! Or larger. The cost of a 42 is around $500 now so no need to go with 32. It's so much better and immersion is amazing. Just buy the cheap LCD version, no need for 120hz or better, 60 is all that the video supports anyways.

Next step is 3x42" with TH2GO or Nvidia surround sound!

Cheers

Only $500 bucks . Built in Blue Ray and all the sweet internet stuff from sony built in too. CES was over a couple weeks ago so these older tvs are getting blowed out. This TV is really really nice. I would think it has Picture in picture too like my XBR6 so you can run computer and watch tv at the same time.

Just be careful what you buy. Just today, I was bored and hooked my 32" Sharp HD LCD TV to my PC via HDMI and even though it says it's displaying 1920x1080, the result is terrible for text display! I started researching and from what I can tell, I need to use the VGA PC input and 1024x768 with black bars on the side to use this HDTV as a PC display.

Granted, games look awesome when using the HDMI input @ 1920x1080 but I need to also be able to work with text displays too. I did try everything I know to try, but bassically, 1920x1080 just seems too low of a res to work with text. I did not try the VGA input.

I will probably be buying a real 30" PC monitor.

Thats odd. I just choose large fonts in windows . On the Web hold down the ctrl button and move mouse wheel. Text will zoom out and in to your likeing.

Any ghosting with the TV's while panning ?

Thx

'+1 For me,.IC all the reviews for widescreen TV as a monitor, but really, is it as good as a large Monitor, at lower RES as the tv must have?:noexpression:

I have the Dell 30", 2560x1600 resolution so I actually see double the amount of world - double the pixels of 1920x1080 :)

This is enough and I don't need multi-screen. I don't need to sit too far back as it's still a monitor not a TV and has the dot pitch just right to sit maybe 2-foot away.

I highly recommend it over a stretched 1920 on a big screen. I only need 2x or 4x AA to look good.

The one thing to be wary of though, with this many pixels you want a good graphics card! I have gtx 580 running it.

Agreed TAIPAN. I tried my Sharp TV with HDMI @ 1920x1080 and though it is awesome for gaming, it really sux as a PC monitor because you cannot really make text look good unless you enlarge the text so big that it looks crazy.

My rig doubles as my workstation, for work, so I need to be able to read word documents and spreadsheets and 1920x1080 just does not work for that at 32". Enlarging the font is not a solution either.

My U3011 will be here tomorrow.

TAIPAN, would you be kind enough to post comparison pics between 2560x1600 and 1920x1080, to show the difference in cockpit FOV? Compressed pics will be fine.

Thanks.

Aelfewulf,

2560x1600 is a 16x10 aspect ratio. The FOV will be exactly the same as a 1920x1200 screen or a 1680x1050. What will be different is how many dots (pixels) per inch on the screen. In general a higher DPI will look better, but text can get hard to read if it is not properly scaled.

Posted

Yeah Gadroc is right, the FOV 16:10 so it's just a little more to the vertical than 16:9. So you can probably see more shkval while still seeing the HUD.

Having said that - with a bigger monitor you have more detail so you do not need to zoom in as much. I often fly at nearly full zoom out, so in that regard you do get some more FOV.

HOWEVER - there is an issue with ED sims in that when you zoom out the ground units turn into a "brick" shaped square box. This is really a detriment to those with large monitors as we want to not zoom in just like real life. I've tried all kinds of tweaks and mods to fix it but I just can't seem to do it since the last patch version.

Hence why I went with a monitor with high resolution. Really, this trend of 27"+ monitors @ 1920x1080 is not a good thing. 27"+ @ 1920x1080=nice TV or gaming monitor for your PC, but not a nice computer monitor, unless you only use your PC for gaming, and nothing else.
