EtherealN Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 I try to be generous with them though - I spent a couple years doing a lot of work for our country edition of that magazine. :P But yeah... To clarify, the FC2 compatibility thing is still in the "unlikely" territory AFAIK. sobek Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 I'm grateful about every story of a hardcore sim in one of the mainstream mags, although i can almost never stand to read them because after just a few lines it becomes too blatantly obvious how little of a clue the mainstream journalists have about flightsims. I guess it's basically the same as science being covered in newspapers. The articles about topics where i have a clue make my hair stand on end. :D Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
EtherealN Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Yeah, the house that published our edition did enjoy a good while with a proper sim reviewer, but he got moved to another paper - which they then axed. But thankfully they've retained him for freelance jobs and he has been writing about DCS that way. (Though I'm unsure if any of those made it to the print rather than just the website. But who really cares about print nowadays? :P ) Agreed on science coverage in the newspapers though. Sulman Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Ha! I think everyone is hoping it will be, though. I love multiplayer with BS and FC2 mixed-up. I think Sim interconnectivity is everyone's dream, and DCS delivered that possibility on a plate (with so much commonality) but of course, reality is different. It's clear reading about A-10 (I haven't tried it yet, will buy when out of beta) that huge strides - again - have been made in AI and mission structure that made me think it will not be trivial to get this module working with either BS or FC2. The latter also has the problem of really being a legacy product very kindly brought into the DCS world. It is still by far the best multi-platform fast-mover sim out there, for my money, but I did wonder how it fits into the ED strategy, long term. Mainstream media does a shit job with many things. I miss the days of PC Zone of old (and I mean mid-late 90's) when sims got proper treatment. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Boberro Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 interesting read. hard mag. They say A10c will be Multi-player compatible with FC2. :music_whistling: It would be profitable for ED as well ;] A-10Cs flying around fighters.... together with sharks and frogfoots... yummy ^^ Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D ಠ_ಠ ツ
EtherealN Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Don't be so sure about that Boberro. Remember that FC2 had a lot of surprises in it for the devs - what was originally expected to be a 2-month operation ended up being a much longer effort. Also keep in mind that time spent making an "FC3" would be almost directly translatable to time delays in the next DCS product and thus a delay on that revenue stream. element1108 Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 It would be profitable for ED as well ;] A-10Cs flying around fighters.... together with sharks and frogfoots... yummy ^^ I'd rather wait a bit longer for DCS fighter than to fly around with simplified fighter opfor that's for sure (especially in a complex A-10C). FC2 right now is great with Black Shark, you have loads of strike fighters/fighters and even a helo...it's hard to ask for a better flight sim platform than that. Just think in 5 years hopefully we'll have the same thing (less fighters) but in a true sim DCS world...THAT is bad ass.
Steel Jaw Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 i can almost never stand to read them because after just a few lines it becomes too blatantly obvious how little of a clue the mainstream journalists have about flightsims.:D Thtat's why I have come to detest those mags: they are fixated on FPS and RTS GARBAGE. PC Pilot and Computer Pilot are better bets. Remeber Computer Gaming World? Old school, they looked at everything. EtherealN Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Meh, there's a lot of very good FPS and RTS products out there. They don't have the same staying power, but few things go as well with beers and friends as a bout of Nazi Zombies on the Xbox or the traditional Christmas Eve Starcraft tournament between me and my brothers. :P (Yes, really, we actually do that. :D ) But yes, PC Pilot is awesome. Depends who wrote it. Back when I had a subscription to PCG they still had a simulation column written by Andy Mahood. (I think I spelled that right) At any rate, he did most if not all of the simulation game reviews and previews for the mag. His column was also top notch. Granted he wrote about more than just flight sims. But I seem to remember his articles had quite a passion for auto-racing and flight sims. Sulman Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 It's an easy enough assumption to make, based on the DCS concept, but is likely just lazy journalism. When DCS first started out I think most felt it would be modular high-fidelity releases on a common platform. Of course so many changes & improvements have happened between BS & A10 (a pattern likely to continue) that the reality is somewhat less simple. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
