I have this game as well as Empire Total War on my Steam account. I think that the realistic 3D battles and awesome graphics are awesome in every sense of the word. My favorite unit in the game would be a tie between the Old Guard (France) and the Artillerie a pied (France also!). Does anyone on this forum have it? If so, what are your opinions?

Started with the Total War Series with Medieval Total War back in 2002. Today I received a package that contained my copy of the brand new Shogun 2 Total War Collectors Edition.

The Total War Series always was an absolute reference for Strategy games.

I'm taking a little break from DCS a-10 (it does stuff to you playing it for too long a period you know :) ) and I'm switching to total war for a little while. I'm a rather incompetent battlefield commander, but I still have a lot of fun playing the battles and campaigns. I also plan to get shogun 2 at some pOint or the other. Viva l'Empreur! ( hope I didn't butcher the French too much )

I have all but Napoleon Shogun, Medieval 1 & 2, and even the crappy Empire. As i don t like rank of people rowing themselves in front of themselves and shooting at each other just praying not getting hit while eating something, all this without seeking any kind of cover... Its beyond me.

For me its really the dark age of warfare.

So i jumped Napoleon, as i should have done with empire.

I already Bought Shogun2 as i am much of clash, at least it make sense in my head.

The game is very beautifull and fun, the AI is somewhat improved. If you like warfare, economic and Strategy, diplomacy take the demo.

There a tutorial and a historical battle mean to show you the kind of battle chaos you will confront

This time CE went back to his roots (about time) bringing the best of what they learned in 10 years.

@Jazjar, DCS may do things to you at long term, but with Shogun you will suffer from the far worse...just one more turn syndrom.

@All of you who don t have it... Buy Rome if possible Rome BI (Barbaric Invasion) its still awesome if you can take on outdated GFX, in this game all the countries have real diferences so playing diferent faction is really diferent and a blast!

In BI, Nothing like night warfare with flamming arrows all over the place. Nothing like loosing a 2000+ city and seeing all the survivors becoming part of the horde coming to smash you, because the city have been plundered to the walls. And a bit of very interesting facts over history in those time were the Mighty decadent ROME fall.

COuld you same it ? Or will you Smash it ? can you ?

Succellus... It might be just personal preference, but I absolutely LOVE watching countless troops, mine and the enemy's, getting slaughtered like pigs by a hail of musket fire. Think of the line infantry as one whole man, and he has to shoot at another man with a musket until he wins. That's the deal in Empire and Napoleon. There are ways you can employ other units, such as cavalry, artillery, and light infantry to gain the advantage in battle. If the only reason you don't like Empire and Napoleon is because of the style of warfare, then you're missing out on a lot.

Frankly,

Its not for nothing that shield where build, that medieval assault on castle had moving covers.

There also the fact that muskets and the like had less range and less accuracy than bows, but they required much less training (no skill) so its why they got popular, anyone could wield one so a general could have wall of dumb, badly payd, suicidal people.

I visualize those battle like 2 bunch of to be executed people with wall on their back and guns. the bunch who have everybody killed first loose.

There s anothe thing that push me out in empire and Napoleon, they seem to shoot so bad its not even fun. 2 row of 50 people shooting at each others front to front shouldn t take 30mn to end, more like 10 at max.

The hack an slash TW's are for me a bit too much of a mess , muskets, cavalry and artillery are the pinnacle in tactical battles. Muskets have limited range and poor accuracy so are played out at 50-200m apart taking balls of steel for troops to hold a disciplined line, these well drilled soldiers have honed their fast reload skills to out gun the opposition. Every country had its own preference on how many troops made up a line and what depth works best for them.

In the game the varying strengths and weaknesses of each faction make it challenging to get the best out of that factions strength eg. the Russians have devastating artillery and the troops excel in melee combat, but coming up against the British or French who have excellent troop reloading and accuracy can be tough and requires some clever thinking.

Damn there s some new things to learn in Shogun...

Althought some old tricks still works, some old trick are quickly avoided by AI.

Rolling an army is much toughter, thought coming with cavalry behind bowmens and battling ennemies still work a charm.

Assalting a castle climbing walls is also awesome and tense.

having to balance the Bushido way and Chi way is daunting as raising armies cost reserves of rice, one more point to worry, supplies!!!

Trading ain t a given you must tame the other clan enought so that he wish to trade.

And my ass have been handled to me in a battle iwould have won on hard when i was on normal...Shame on me.

As for strategy in TW they are basically the same since Shogun one. Musket or not. Rolling an army works like a charm at least until Empire and trapping AI ain t a challenge as AI is dumb enought and can t maintain ciherence in Empire , don t know about Napoleon thoug.

In Shogun or they fall back or it seem they try to break your line in a single attempt, not sure it a normal behavior or a coincidence.

If not Its Sun Tzu applied as i had him cornered with no issue, its charged and broke my lines..like a spear trought an armor. Morale broke and my general fled as cavalry charged and i was trying to steam the flow until i could regroup...no time, bad luck, bad tactic..whatever, or all toghether.. Arght.

:D

Ijust had to launch A10C and fly around (take off, landing) just to hear the engine whine from start to full growl and my mood was back this morning....Interesting how simple little things can change your mood and bring you happiness.:D

Thank you Ed and to your team.

Wait until a SAM blows up your hog to pieces, then you`ll get back to the way of Bushido to cheer up :D

Boy i m playing at hard.... minimal attention to some details can make so much diference in the long run...

And its not only war anymore, agents are so much importants and agents have that much skills you have to choose who will be expert at what, not only at theyr basic skills but they can also influenc ein how fast your develop yourself.

I find it awesome, other people might find it overbearing in micro management.

You have to balance subtility and raw power, because comes a time, where the falcons will be released to shred the eagle, and he might die or be reduced as a mere pigeon.

SHOGUN TOTAL WAR 2!!!

Yeah, the realease was russhed. I like it, but...

Can't they fix the multiplayer. Some battles are recorded, some arent?

Once it founds somebody it never quits, if he disconnects (or you) you can't back down, it'll be stuck, and it takes ages to restart the game. Also, Cavalry is faaaaaaar too cheap in mp. Not to mention, (sometimes) most of the time I can't pick units!! Wtf, last battle i went, i was alone with the general, and the enemy had 1800 troops?! Come on... That's not all, it's totaly random, sometimes it does that, some times it doesn't. I found out it actualy happens all the time if you open help thingie (Ingame chrome browser). Ok, that's not all, you can't play 2v2 games. No, i'm not kidding, it gives an error :(

Darn, i hope they'll fix that with the dx11 outcome

Yeah the solo game is fantastic the multiplayer is wacko, i don t play multiplayer yet.

No reason to go MP if you don t know freak about SP.

What i expect more is the campaign mode, not the drop in battle but the real campaign.

i keep getting my ass handed to me in Shogun2 no matter what I do the enemy always steamrollers me into the ground =(. They always have full stack armies even if they have only 1 starting area. Even on easy (i have no hope of playing on a higher setting) I mean I realise its supposed to be a challenge and thats what I expect but I cant even get started

How people play on Legendary is frankly amazing. Im just to slow too old and too backward to play this :smilewink:.

I think I will stick with what I know, flightsims and Arma2

EEeh, i'm playing on legendary and it's quite easy, so i decided instead of fighting the AI, to do dropin battles so it's more challenging :)

You try starting with an easy clan, the one i'm playing is Oda, and it's in middle of japan, so i'm getting hammered from all sides; You should try playing as Date or Shimazu or Usuegi, They have a nice start. Anyhow, Try making 1 enemy at the time, and making big armies, it's gona be easyer. Once you get used to the game, you'll find it fun :)

i managed a multiplayer 2v2 the other night, out lasted my partner but inevitably i lost being it was my first ever total war mp match.

btw when you in that cycle of looking for game and u cant seem to exit. you have to wait for the split second the yellow tab shows up to stop the search.
