jpm1 Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 They mentioned reconnaissance, otherwise not much info. I assume they know what they're doing though. they were Rafales Reco-NG . actually there are around 20 french planes more or less around Lybia and they are free to engage if K. enforce UN resolution . strikes against armor that could represent immediate threat to civilian are conceivable equally . on TV they were showing danish F-18 preparing in Italy too . CDG is expected to leave Toulon tomorrow . SU-25 missions [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
nscode Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 MiG-23 shot down (second video on the page) Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
jpm1 Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 -maritime blocade around Lybia is effective -first engagement from a french plane against an armor (seems the vehicle has been destroyed) -Qatar will join the allied -Germany won't participate but increases its participation in Afghanistan to relieve allied effort SU-25 missions [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
vtsgoose1606687932 Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 about the AA, can't they use fighter jets to perform SEAD tasks? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] http://virtual-aerobatic-group.nl/
RogueRunner Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 It seems a French aircraft now destroyed a military target. http://www.news24.com/Africa/News/French-warplane-fires-on-Libya-20110319 With the price of ammunition these days do not expect a warning shot.
tflash Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 Video of airbase activity and Rafale pilot preparations: http://www.deredactie.be/cm/vrtnieuws/mediatheek/nieuws/buitenland/1.985277 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Yes France has taken the lead and are already operational over Libya - looks like the aircraft currently roaming over Benghazi are tasked primarily with intelligence gathering and(I would think) "probing" AD capability in advance of larger operations. on TV they were showing danish F-18 preparing in Italy too . Well F-16AM's :) . According to our airforce the jets themselves are already fuelled and armed, so the preparations apparently concern setting up a command center for them :) JJ
Alfa Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 Latest reports suggest that French fighters have now destroyed 4 Libyan tanks. So looks like the French are going straight to business and not just on a recon mission. JJ
Radar Rider Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 The 4 spanish F-18 had take off just now to Italy. Good look! Also Spain is sending an Aegis frigate F-100, a S-80 submarine that is now on the zone, a tanker and a maritime patrol airplane.
Pilotasso Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 PoAF will not send fighters but we have 2 MEKO frigates and one U-214 sub in the area. They are not expected to be tasked for hostilities, only blockade. .
eurofor Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 about the AA, can't they use fighter jets to perform SEAD tasks? According to this link on the first page of this thread, the air defences are concentrated around a few cities. The SAM sites around Benghazi, if still operational, are likely operated by the opposition so perhaps there has been no need to take them out. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Alfa Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 ...The SAM sites around Benghazi, if still operational, are likely operated by the opposition so perhaps there has been no need to take them out. ....or maybe there is. Not to point any fingers since I have no way of knowing, but I wouldn't be surprised if that opposition operated MiG-23 was lost to friendly fire. JJ

On dutch tv they confirmed it was friendly fire, not sure about that. Was the pilot a defected one? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] http://virtual-aerobatic-group.nl/

They can't trust someone with a finger on the launch button. I just think that considering there are reports of destruction of single military vehicles, surely they would have reported on taking out the SAM sites which is a much bigger achievement. nscode Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 SAMs will not likely be used until there is a threat of ground invasion. Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
Alfa Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 Indeed. They can't trust someone with a finger on the launch button. Well I could imagine that rebels on the ground might not have realised that they even had any aircraft at their disposal and therefore never considered whether an aircraft in the sky could be anything but hostile. I just think that considering there are reports of destruction of single military vehicles, surely they would have reported on taking out the SAM sites which is a much bigger achievement. Yes I agree. JJ
Alfa Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 SAMs will not likely be used until there is a threat of ground invasion. I seriously doubt that nscode. If the coalition jets were merely partrolling the airspace then perhaps, but considering that government ground forces have been attacked directly I would think that they would try to defend themselves with whatever means available. Mustang Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 US Tomahawks are striking targets now as i type, and french air force jets have been in action.
topol-m Posted March 19, 2011 Author Posted March 19, 2011 FOX news stating that the US Navy will start firing Tomahawks tonight. I was sure they`ll start using cruise missiles eventually. Didn`t expect the fighters to deal with all targets. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Mustang Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 (edited) Air defense sites east of Tripoli are being hit by cruise missiles. http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?194456-Libya-Unrest-Thread/page332 and UK Prime Minister Cameron just gave a statement on the situation, also BBC comfirms UK forces are in action now. My thoughts go to the personel putting their lives on the line. Edited March 19, 2011 by Mustang
