They mentioned reconnaissance, otherwise not much info. I assume they know what they're doing though.

they were Rafales Reco-NG . actually there are around 20 french planes more or less around Lybia and they are free to engage if K. enforce UN resolution . strikes against armor that could represent immediate threat to civilian are conceivable equally . on TV they were showing danish F-18 preparing in Italy too . CDG is expected to leave Toulon tomorrow .

-maritime blocade around Lybia is effective

-first engagement from a french plane against an armor (seems the vehicle has been destroyed)

-Qatar will join the allied

-Germany won't participate but increases its participation in Afghanistan to relieve allied effort

Yes France has taken the lead and are already operational over Libya - looks like the aircraft currently roaming over Benghazi are tasked primarily with intelligence gathering and(I would think) "probing" AD capability in advance of larger operations.

Well F-16AM's :) . According to our airforce the jets themselves are already fuelled and armed, so the preparations apparently concern setting up a command center for them :)

Latest reports suggest that French fighters have now destroyed 4 Libyan tanks.

So looks like the French are going straight to business and not just on a recon mission.

The 4 spanish F-18 had take off just now to Italy. Good look!

Also Spain is sending an Aegis frigate F-100, a S-80 submarine that is now on the zone, a tanker and a maritime patrol airplane.

about the AA, can't they use fighter jets to perform SEAD tasks?

According to this link on the first page of this thread, the air defences are concentrated around a few cities. The SAM sites around Benghazi, if still operational, are likely operated by the opposition so perhaps there has been no need to take them out.

....or maybe there is.

Not to point any fingers since I have no way of knowing, but I wouldn't be surprised if that opposition operated MiG-23 was lost to friendly fire.

Indeed. They can't trust someone with a finger on the launch button. I just think that considering there are reports of destruction of single military vehicles, surely they would have reported on taking out the SAM sites which is a much bigger achievement.

On dutch tv they confirmed it was friendly fire, not sure about that.

No neither am I, but when you consider the general state of panic that clearly exists in Benghazi now, I think its a possibility.

Was the pilot a defected one?

Must have been

SAMs will not likely be used until there is a threat of ground invasion.

Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.

Well I could imagine that rebels on the ground might not have realised that they even had any aircraft at their disposal and therefore never considered whether an aircraft in the sky could be anything but hostile.

Yes I agree.

I seriously doubt that nscode.

If the coalition jets were merely partrolling the airspace then perhaps, but considering that government ground forces have been attacked directly I would think that they would try to defend themselves with whatever means available.

I was sure they`ll start using cruise missiles eventually. Didn`t expect the fighters to deal with all targets.
