any tips ?

I tried to fly on the 74th server and was being engaged by two Buk radar Sams... there was an overcast sky and default payload was CBU97s and Mav D

I couldnt utilize altitude and found the IR seeker on the Mav D poor at getting within range for a launch.

How would you suggest engaging with the overcast and that payload?

Call the cavalry (F-16, F-15E, F/A-18C)... lots of choices. I wouldn't dare to engage a Buk in that situation.

One Buk system firing two missiles at a time (normal)?

Or two launching 4 missiles at a time?

Utilize terrain-masking if possible to get within launch parameters: Probably the only certain way if you value the airframe, other than depleting the launchers and tagging the radar from stand-off range, the latter being a particularly bad idea if you're dealing with an Intelligent mission-designer.

Assuming you have the target in sight via TGP, come in very low (200 AGL), pop up at 5nm, fire, get back down quick. And I'd be popping countermeasures like mad once I start the popup.

Do-able? Maybe. Fun? Hell yeah. Realistic? Probably not.

Can you give me the parameters of the mission if you can remember it? Your distance from the Buks? How low was the overcast? How far apart were the Buks?

Hi mate.

I designed Op Samson. It is a challenge and certainly achieveable.

You are not prioritising your targets.

You should follow the following principles:

Radar, SAM, AAA, MBT, IFV, ARV (sometimes MBT and IFV can be swapped around depending on threat)

With this in mind, take out the RADAR of the corridoor first. Be cautious of reinforcements boith sides of the river!

Aquire the Tgt at max range. It is possible to do this without a point lock just after taking off.

Go into the weeds. Use terrain masking (there's a big bloody hill smack bang in the middle, hint), NOE flying and move from town / village to town / village. Use the pop up tactic at 18 nm approx to reaquire the tgt and make a point lock, make it the SPI, Dump bags of chaff, beam the threat area, and dive back into the weeds. maintain a beam posture until any spiking has stopped.

Once spiking has stopped, re-allign off center toward the Tgt, ensure you are moving from West to east parralell to the corridoor, to ensure no TGP masking. flying in the weeds will mean that you will not have a sight picutre of the Tgt in the TGP any more, fear not.

At approx 7 .5 km, in the weeds with your mavs ready to go, conduct a pop up and on the roll with the Mav MFCD as SOI, slave/slew the seeker head, to the SPI, TMS up short, lock, & fire!

You will be back in the weeds before even being fired upon.

Failing all of the above, come along to one of our Open workshops where Op Samson highlights the importance of being able to fly low, use tactics such as terrain masking and NOE and engagement at max stand off distance.

Good luck.

PS: be aware that the Corridoor has 4 BUK positions controlled from a central location. East to west = about 6km. North to south = about 2 km.

Get too close to the coridoor and then BUK system at the enemy base will engage you. It is a position in mutual support and offers depth of the coriddor. Take out the SAM cover in the coridoor to neutralise the EMP field.

I don't know how high Buks go but GBU-31, half fuel, climb for an hour and drop blind on a linked coordinate. That's my first idea.

Ok.......and how will you do that with an overcast at 10,000 ft? and an EMP area of 15km around the enemy base which includes the Coridoor?

Do-able? er.......................yes. This is not difficult. A challenge yes, but certainly not difficult. Your tactic is exactly correct. Pop up tactic is the ONLY way to defeat the BUK when under an altitude constraint, in this case offered by the overcast at Angles 10.

Fun? er...............................yep. Right their mate, sure is!

realistic? er..............................I wouldn't have thought so TBH. Although in loose terms the A-10a/c 'has and can' commit to SEAD sorties, the fact of the matter is that it is NOT a SEAD aircraft, nor is it equipped with long distance standoff weapon systems, HARM etc etc

It is a Tank Killer. As such it would engage MBT, IFV, ARV and infrastructure Tgt's once an IADS threat is reduced / eliminated by dedicated SEAD flights with appropriate weapon systems. Sure, it can engage and destroy mobile SAM's and other SHORAD systems, but it is not a deciated SEAD platform.

So, why the IADS / BUK coverage over the corridoor known as 'NAI SAMSON' in Op Samson?

Well, it's simple TBH. The whole mission is designed for you to practice your skills at NOE, terrain masking, Beaming, use of CMS, Pop-up tactic and finetuning your system of work between the target aquisition systems (TGP) and engagement systems. If you can do the whole mission without getting killed, and have had an effect on enemy forces (not just in an anchor 30km south ;-)), then you are well on your way to becoming very effective in this airframe.

Thats what we are all here for right?

Regards

 fair one.

I'm willing to bet the EMP area will get you before 'pickle'..........................hint.

Refer to my last post.

This whole mission is designed for you to practice your Pop up tactics.

Of course, tgtíng, climbing, and dropping a JDAM is an option, but krikey, long ole way! :music_whistling:

You are all welcome anytime, you know that.

With Servman 3, you can vote missions in. Currently there are 3 different styles of each Op. Standard, at night and opposite weather to the original.

Details are on the website mission briefings area.

14 missions to choose from.

The only stipulation is that you are on our Teamspeak and you 'converse' with each other. We are sort of forcing those that don't want to do so.

There is no need to register on the website. Teamspeak details are contained on the first few lines of the mission description. Highlight the server on the master server list and you will see the teamspeak IP and password. When you connect, you will be told the A-10C's server password.

Current server in use is: 'LYNX' - Core 2 duo E8650 @ 3Ghz, 4 GB DDR3, on a NVidia 8800GT (not needed to be honest). 'LYNX' has been designed to serve A-10C. All settings finetuned for a flawless and lag free delivery. Currently in co-lo in the UK on a highspeed backbone of 50/25. More than big enough. 24/7 365.

Our other server 'PUMA' is in Sweeden and currently down. It is used for DCS Blackshark Fam flights for 74th members oinly and is 'on call' for use.

Enjoy.

Op Samson is great fun... so a pat on the back for Tyger there...

Once you get the jist of it, BUKs arent that much of a problem, I keep getting my arse kicked later when the Migs appear. Have never been able to do anything about them exept whimper, crap myself and get vaporised.
