I'm afraid I'm not a pilot, so I'm not 100% on this, but it seems to me that you're confusing a camera with human vision.

It says in the description that the video was made using an NV MONOcular on a camera. Camera's have a single circular lens, hence we see a circle from it. The NVG's a pilot uses however are BInoculars, two lenses, therefore giving a combined image from the left and right, which would appear as a joint oval to the human brain.

im an italian airforce pilot, i fly on UH-1N, 21st Tiger Squadron on 9th Wing near Naples, and i repeat you that the ANVS-9 (binocular) have a 40° Circle vision, now i have about 300 night-flight hours, and 90% of this hours flew with the anvis 9 and i confir you the circle (a little bit oval) view of the NVG devices, but no so much like DCS a-10c.

On the DCS a-10c the FOV on NGVs are about 90-100°. I write this post only for improve the reality of DCS, not for generate a flame.

next video show the last patch of falcon 4.0, BMS 4.32, watch the video at 0:55, i like it, this is more real, really, i saw this image when i put my eyes on anvis-9 NVD. See the darkness of night on the right and left side of NVG...THIS IS 40° of FOV, I WANT THIS VIEW ON DCS A-10C, I GET REAL!!!!!

or this one, ARMA2

DCS NVG is a post process effect with a static black mask hole. Usually hole is made by game developers to be oval to use the maximum amount of screen which isn't a square to not make gamers mad.

Real NVG would have the viewable FOV fixed to real life performance. Say it is 30 deg in real life. If you zoom out in DCS to 120 deg FOV then most of your vision is black with a 30 deg circle to see through. If you zoom in then mask is outside your monitor so you get all green. For the best the pixel size gets big at zoom so eagle eye with NVG is limited.

Then more post process to make NVG like NVG and not like green-day. IR images like LUU-19 and NVIS external lights just like the TGP pointer for even more!

OK it's totaly true. Navigate in DCS a10c directory, i find the oval mask, now i try to modify, it's in

I never used real NVG, but I believe they would be more realistic in DCS A-10 if I couldn't see also the world out of the green oval.

Nope, you should be able to look under (or around) the goggles. If you couldn't you wouldn't be able to see the cockpit instruments, or anything else up close. NVGs like every optical system need to be focused to a given distance, obvously pilots will generally have them focussed to infinity so they can see the world around them. This means anything in the cockpit would be out of focus up close so you need to glance under the googles to read the instruments.

This is one of the reasons NVGs are not normally used for takeoff & landing,

i flew a little bit this morning to try the modded NVG, and i think that is more similar to real life, and also much funny, because now to see somethings at 11 o'clock now you must turn the head at 11 o'clock.

I add two black lillte dot on upper left side of NVG, for simulate a damage photocathodes, a common state for this type of gear, that not compromise the final efficiency of NVD.

Thx a lot Bye bye

In the Mod section of the forums as well as the User files of the main website http://files.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/ once you have a Modman package for the Mod.

If you do not have Modman, I'll be able to assist you in creating a package for the Mod. Just shout if you need help :)

I have to say "great job" as well. You mod looks really great so far and I'm looking forward to giving it a try.

Maybe someday you can do the same for Black Shark? :D

Also, I have roughly 700 hours of goggle time as a crew chief...mostly with AN/AVS-6, but about 100 hours with AN/AVS-9.

I especially like the damaged photocathodes.

Hi - relay good job (especially at the broken photo-cathode)- and thanks for bringing this topic up!

I edited mine also some moons ago - but never posted it.

But I would ask you to include it when you pack it as download - It will give the user a better "down-look" capability.

But the pity is that what is a circle for the guy with a 4:3 - will still be a oval on a 16:9...

...so it highly depends on the aspect ratio you are using.

- that why I never published it- because I had to make many different variant to please all people with different monitors - not to talk about multi-monitor combinations....

edit: I never thought that the community has such a high demand in seeing this correctly simulated in DCS - so I would be glad if I could assist in making sure that we have a working range of aspect-ratios starting on 5:4 and going up to 16:9 - and even adding 12:3 and 16:3 - so that it will work on Triple-head setups.

Maybe will find some Gimp time at the weekend and load up the different versions when ready.

Hopefully (didn't tested -so fingers crossed) this also supports the function to add a alpha-channel...

So it is possible to add the effect of a covered Border - to simulate the view to actually wearing something in front your head...

These is a quick edit in gimp to show you what I mean:

The original without blocking borders:

Screen_1-111014_124227.jpg

...i think it would add allot to the immersion.

VERY nice peter. Now if only we could have random damaged cathodes and the view through the goggles focussed to infinity we'd be sorted.

eheh... i have already think the possibility of make a black round on the border of green circle, to simulate the plastic tube of NVG, but i need time to try this, and i need your help to make the "plastic tube". Do you have some idea to make this effect??

"and the view through the goggles focussed to infinity we'd be sorted."

- it should be possible to add a Z-detection for post-processing blurriness in DX9. - but don't ask me how easy/hard this is to implement in to the engine of DCS....

Maybe/Hopefully in upcoming modules... :music_whistling:

When I'm home (about 3houers) I try to add a alpha-channel to see if we can get the same effect like in Black Shark when using the monocle...

this is a simple alpha channel file, like nvg file, a little bit blurred on photoshop, is a little bit different of nvg, because on nvg file work the hdr engine that i don't knows, infact if you remember, in dcs black shark the monocole of sckval can't be used togheter with NVG.
