is there a way to export the current weather conditions to the brief just before flight?

the reason i ask is that this would be great info for the pilot to have as this is relevant to all briefings.

yesterday we were in a MP game with cold and windy conditions that had caused multiple engine shut downs.

it took a little bit to figure out, but once we did, i was amazed how well this sim is modeled.

given the feature of the dynamic weather, im not sure where to see if this can be done or not (checking current weather before flight).

MP creators can/should use this export feature whenever possible, if it exists.

thanks ED.

I am not aware of any way of doing this. However, the iPhone app I am building at the moment plans to grab these from the mission file and place them in a weather screen for the mission. I know this doesn't help much but there is a way to integrate the mission file with some kind of mission briefing tool.

Every mission I have flown has been blue skys, scattered cumulus at 7000 feet, irrelevent temperature, negligible wind.

Its a pity that more interesting conditions are not more commonly used. If they were I think there would be use for this. Or maybe just a half decent ATC that would give you the weather at startup. An ATIS frequency for example.

The original campaign Devils Cross had the best use of weather I have seen in the sim.

Then again maybe Im not getting enough airtime to see that there actually is some variety in the weather.

maybe one of the dev's can chime in and ad a small example of how to export the weather to the flight brief just before T/O that we could all use.

I haven't made a mission yet with blue skies. Try overcast & foggy (FOB Vetka) or mostly-cloudy (StandbyCSAR) with low ceilings, and up to 50 kt crosswinds w/dynamic weather in the latter. :D

The lighting effects and weather effects in this sim are absolutely awesome and agree, underutilized in missions. That being said, more weather=havoc on lower end systems, so some of the reluctance to add weather comes from people wanting to maximize performance, understandably.

The main thing I think this sim is missing weather-wise is a good mostly-cloudy (and moving) system that doesn't require adding 4-5 cyclones in dynamic (and testing 500 times to find the right combo to get the desired cloudiness). Thinking along the lines of having to look through and dive through holes in the clouds to find/hit targets, much like they did in the Gulf and Kosovo.

i have played the missions that you created. i do like your use of weather.

.

MTFD

you tell me how ATC is useful in getting current weather conditions.

.

the general question is how to get current weather conditions exported to the brief especially with the implementation of dynamic weather where it changes from one mission to the next. it would be usefull to know

Yes I think the weather effects can be amazing in this sim, its just a shame they are not often used.

A mission could be much simpler, but be more interesting, if the weather was bad. You can orbit around at 20k all day and kill tens of tanks, but its not that intersting, or you can stooge around under a 1000ft cloudbase in heavy rain and hunt for a single column of tanks. That would be interesting.

Sorry its that is slightly OT.

I think the ATC or ATIS could be implemented to create weather reports, or maybe a knee board in the cockpit with the days weather conditions on it.

If I want to have information from the briefing that I take on the mission, I usually just take a picture of it with my phone. That is fairly simple solution.

But if it's in the briefing it's still no good to you unless you keep pausing it. Just do what they do in real life: take a piece of paper, and a pencil, and write whatever you need down. Simplest is best, can't go wrong really.

i dont understand this. why would you have to pause the sim all the time?

take a piece of paper, and a pencil, and write whatever you need down

in multiplayer missions, where do you find this info?

Oh it sounds like I have misunderstand the problem..

I thought you were looking for a way to get the information from the mission planner where you can see the weather (I think) and transfer it to the new paused screen (1.1.10) where there is mission information once the game has started.

I have only tried online once or twice, I thought there was a mission planner page before you start with all relevent info. If not then I see your problem!

Sorry for confusion!

is there a way to export weather info to the pilot brief once the the pilot chooses the mission?

What weather info? I would have thought that the only relevant information for the Pilot would be Wind (Direction and Speed) and Temperature.

Even more so in the dynamic weather system where it is subject to change, how is it possible to 'predict' what the weather is doing 100 miles from base? Stands to reason that such info cannot possibly be exported to the Pilot in the briefing prior to the commencement of the flight.

Uhm, have you ever seen weather forecast on TV? ;)

Sure these forecasts shouldn't be 100% spot on, but RL weather predicitions for the next 12hours are fairly close to what will happen.

Not in times of War, no :D

Easily catered for by an adequate mission briefing by the author of the mission concerned. Accessible via briefing screen in SP and MP respectively and I dare say, apart from sticking your head out of the cockpit/window, in accordance with RL procedure covered by the pre-flight brief. Then again, I'm no pilot, so please correct me if wrong :)

Edit: Aforesaid obviously applicable to standard weather. I can see where the problem is insofar as dynamic weather is concerned.

Yeah - the question would be then as to how mission authors are/SIM is to to predict the weather in real time insofar as clouds/overcast/altitude are concerned in the SIM's dynamic weather environment. Answer is they/it cannot so the pilot will just have to rely on opening the cockpit and having a look en-route.

Insofar as the Wind direction and speed and temperature is concerned, he has the IFFCC to tell him exactly what is what at any given time at any given location.

LOL! Imagine a kind of LOCERF event. A package of A-10s is tasked to do some Mk-82 bomb runs on a defended target area (means they'd have to start their engagements from between 13.5k to 20k ft, depending on the kind of defense systems). They have a 90minute enroute leg, just to find out once they reach the target area that they have overcast at 8.500ft!  :pilotfly:

You see - we're missing good weathermen/women In-SIM......mmmmmm ideas for next module: DCS Weatherman :D

Jokes aside, apart from a resident Operational Meteorologist on-hand, how would one set out predicting the dynamic weather in any event?

Honestly: I don't know!

I'm not a progger! But as long as the dynamic weather follows rules similar to RL weather there should be a possibility to generate predictions (again: they shouldn't be 100% spot on) for pre-defineable regions.

Something like: Put about 10-20 meteo-reporting spots over the map (at larger cities?). Make them chooseable (at least for the mission-builder) to ask for weather 1. current 2. T+2h 3. T+4h 4. T+6h. If the engine can calculate the weather it can generate a prediction as well. I'd think it'd just need a interface to be asked for. Add a slight factor of failure (which would be realistic for a weather prediction), increasing with how far into the future you'd like to look.

Again: I have no idea of programming, but trying to imagine how this stuff works, let's me think this should be possible. And I'd really find it usefull in many situations.

how about just a simple ATIS for the departing field. nothing too complicating.

.

the mission brief knows what field you are departing from, so a quick export of current conditions written to the brief would (for me) be suffice.

.

i wasnt aware that the CDU could give winds before flight. i can see them once inflight though.
