Event: KA-50 Open Workshop 1 - Flight. Sponsored by the 74th vfs 'The Flying Tigers'. This event may be repeated prior to the remainder of the Open Workshops; that being 2 - Naviagtion and 3 - Engagement.

What: An Open workshop for Brand-New KA-50 Pilots of ED's fantastic BS2. This is bottom line 'Must know' instruction for Flight Skills. Semantics and theories can go take a run.

Won't: Manual startups or intimate cockpit switches and settings (understanding is a pre-requisite), Intimate HOTAS setup's, ABRIS or Engagement using any weapons (Workshops 2 and 3), Hardware fault finding, assistance in finetuning graphics settings or changes of Graphics or Options .lua files, Mission Editor or .Lua scripting.

Format: Flight Skills to include: Hovering - Rolling Take Off - Landing at FARPS, Airfields, Ships and Oil Platforms - Hovering (Man & Auto) - Use of the collective break - Slewing - Funneling - Hammerhead - Tilts - High G turns. All culminating in a mass 'Fly-in' course that will push your new flight skills to the limit!

Timeframe: 2-3 hours. Committment please. If you sign up, you sign up for the full Workshop, that way i can guarantee continuity of your learning curve. Dissapearing after an hour will get you barred from future Workshops. I am committing to you, reciprocation is only fair.

When: 06th Jan 2012 @ 2000 hrs - UK Time / GMT.

Where: LYNX - 74th vfs 'The Flying Tigers' Dedi server.

Who: 74th_Tyger will be instructing. This event is open to any member of the 74th or the wider DCS Community.

How: Sign up by replying to http://www.74thvirtual.co.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=3317 and then be on our Teamspeak server at 1945 hrs in the channel named 'BS2 Open Workshop' - first come first served!

Teamspeak: Address: 217.146.89.100 Port: 10143 Password: stripeycat

Slots: 15 including Instructor.

Livestream: This Training will be Livestreamed with sound. Any takers above the 15 slots may watch and listen.

Bottom Line: If you are new to BS2 or the KA-50, then this workshop is for you. If you have some experience with BS1 but haven't flow for a while, then pop along too. If you are intermmediate or usefull in the pit, this is not for you, move along, - "these are not the droids your'e looking for!". If continuity throughout the full expanse of the KA-50 is what you're after also, then why not plugin to this first Open Workshop. The remainder will essentially build upon skills taught in previous Workshops, This one, being the first!

Cost: Don't be daft! Make a donation on our site if you want to.

Ill do my best to be there!

Anytime someone encourages people to get into the KA-50 I hope the community comes out and supports. It is an absolute blast to fly if you take the time to practice the basics but is an angry bull when handled incorrectly. I highly recommend this workshop as the 74th do top knotch work in this community and much will be learned.

Is watching this just to pick up a couple of tricks Ok if we don't watch it for long and just drop in and out or do we have to watch for the full thing?

Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing

Posted (edited)

That sounds great!

I really love the idea and hope that someone will render a video from this event.

... since not all of us can join at that time

But nevertheless - have fun and plenty of enthusiastic pilots/students :)

Looks like an excellent idea, I hope it's a great success! If I could see a way of being available for the four hours I'd jump into one of those slots straight away!

Cool, don't have time to sign up for the full thing so I'll try to pick up a couple of tips.

Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing

This sounds fantastic, but I can't make it. So will the capture be avail. as a download? Or on a site?

Cheers!

I'll still be at work here in Texas... so a recording would be a great way to share for those of us unable to actually attend.

Great.

But it's wierd; This workshop is at 20:00 GMT. My clock shows 20:00 GMT+2

That means it starts at 22:00 in my time?

And you say that it is 1 hour later. I don't understand, where is 60 minutes. :)

Or I didn't calculate this stuff. :)

EDIT: Whatever... Teamspeak again!. Sorry. I'm out of play...

Yea, I also think this is a great idea. Kudos to you Tyger for starting such a thing.

In a similar vein, perhaps several of the knowledgeable users of the mission editor could get together and host workshops for how to use it. It could have four separate sections, Basic use, AI, Triggers, and Lua. I've thought about doing something like it before with just my squad, but there are never enough folks in just my squad seriously interested in a ME workshop to justify all the work it would take me... but if you got like 10+ folks from the community, plus at least three guys organizing it, then it might be good.

Intelligent discourse can only begin with the honest admission of your own fallibility.

I want to thank Tyger for doing this tonight.

I was not able to make the server but managed to watch a good amount on the live stream,

well structured teaching and easy to follow.

I would recommend to anyone who is starting out with the Black-shark 2 ( like me ) to take part or watch future live feeds.

It was a great idea, that was better than great when you were actually in it and participating. The results speak for themselves a 3hr session which (for those that wanted and could) ended up closer to 6hrs for most people simply because it was too good an oppourtunity to miss.

Did I learn anything?

This is how my BS2 week has been...

Monday : See Tygers community invitation for BS2 Training with the 74th's, then quickly realise that if I'm ever going to fly the KA-50 this is as good as it gets so I sign up.

Tuesday : PANIC... Despite owning BS2 for a few months I know next to nothing and have little to no flight experience with the KA-50. I need to do something fast. So I jump onto You Tube and find the 'leading edge training videos for BS manual start' and start to learn.

Wednesday : After a few hours later and some note taking I can manually start the KA-50 unaided and in doing so have basically learnt the layout of the cockpit. PANIC... ok I can start but I haven't flown yet! Also figured out how to map TeamSpeak PTT to HOTAS as well as TrIR centering.

Thursday : Read the BS2 QuickStart guide on the train on the way to work and watch some cached YouTube training clips <get some strange looks>

Friday : Its 7:45pm <gulp>, how do you join a MP server and why is BS2 asking me to login to a master server before I even see a server list? Yikes! but get it sorted whilst we have some introductions, I must have set it up when I installed the game. So got the game up and running and setup the LiveStream connection on my laptop next to me whilst leaving my PC to handle BS2. WoW how many KA-50's? Anyhow through Tygers professional quality training I tried trimming, hovering, hammerheads, break 180, funneling and landing... I got some of it right, I crashed lots <wasn't a problem> and had a great time.

I'm still a beginner but I now know 1000% more than I did, I now have some flight experience and as a result have got so much more out of BS2 than 1 week ago.

I made some notes and have taken away some homework to practice, its clear to me that the Navigation workshop is currently beyond my flight skills BUT I have something to aim for.

Given a chance I would do this workshop again, and for anyone that is even remotely interested I would encourage you to join the LiveStream video so you can at least observe even if you don't want to fly. If a total newbie to BS2 like me can join in and fly in the workshop then anyone can.

Big thanks to Tyger for your efforts and patience...

(and appologies to the chap I flew into on the taxi way whilst trying to hover :joystick:)

Thank you Tyger, for that great workshop!

I know, I really shouldn´t praise it too much, or next time I won´t get a free slot, because these things are going to be legendary!

Being a RL fixed-wing guy, I started with the A-10, but when the X-Mas sale came up, I just couldn´t resist. Always had a special love for helicopters.

After about 3h in the Ka-50, of which I spent at least 2h with cockpit fam, I joined Tygers workshop, somewhat apprehensive if I could keep up with the other guys.

What can I tell? It was a blast! Tyger is such a great teacher und I just could listen to this guy 24h. He´s doing a very professional job with just the right amount of humor.

So after 6! hours of flying I was pretty drained and hit the sack at 3:30 local, but with much more knowledge, confidence and experience than I ever had expected.

Now it´s time for a lot of practice!

Thank you 74th for sharing your wisdom and I´m looking forward to fly with you guys again!

And NO, I won´t descend on my flight leader again, so he get´s kicked from his own server, sorry again for that :music_whistling:

Rock 'n' Roll!
