JG-1_Vogel Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 I just got DCS Warthog today through my letterbox, and trying to get it to a point where I can fly smoothly. Before I go into any detail here are my PC specs: Core i3 530 clocked to 4.20Ghz 4GB of DDR3 1600mhz (I think) Nvidia GTX460 Windows 7 64bit Textures - High Scenes - Medium View Distance - Medium Water - Medium Heat Blur - Off Screen res - 1920x1080 AA - 2x AF- 8x (forced through control panel) Vsync - Off HDR - On TSAA (what is this???) - Off If I missed anything let me know, but my FPS is pretty naff. I know my PC isn't a powerhouse but it's very much capable of running DCS ok. Black Shark runs smooth at 60fps constant no problems. Are there any performance issues I should be aware of? PC is defragged and maintained very well, so no issues there. Was getting some stuttering to start with and external views dropped to 8fps even when I was at 8,000ft by myself with nothing going on.
McVittees Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 That's odd. DCS A10C runs far smoother for me than Black Shark 2 (if it is BS2 you're referring to). BS1 ran much smoother than BS2 for that matter as well. 159th_Viper Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 LW - do not force/set AA/AF through your card. Leave them at 'Application Controlled' (or the NVidia equivalent) and set via SP GUI. JG-1_Vogel Posted May 9, 2012 Author Posted May 9, 2012 Just to clarify, I'm not running Black Shark 2 only the original.
mmaruda Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 A-10 and BS2 require a beast PC to run at a descent framerate. You can check Windows and Nvidia setting for any power-saving stuff, turning everything to max performance might help a bit.
Shaderhacker Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 I had to buy a whole new computer for this simulator. A $2,500 investment.
sobek Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Just to clarify, I'm not running Black Shark 2 only the original. There was a significant upgrade in visuals from BS to A-10 (HDR, Tree Shadows, Cockpit Shadows, etc.) as such you cannot directly compare the two. Start by turning water down to low, that might give you a boost. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!

I have a GTX 590 and the game still runs like crap on the ground or if I turn on the TGP with camera on the terrain. I think it's all the physics calculations involved. Cockpit is the most heavy part of the framerate.
Hamblue Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Also try lowering the resolutoion to 1600x1024. Shadows are another thing you can turn off to speed things up. badger66 Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Turn your mirrors off , you dont need them , just eye candy really .
JG-1_Vogel Posted May 9, 2012 Author Posted May 9, 2012 Mirrors are already off badger66 :) I remember from FC they just chew up the frame rate for nothing! Will try lowering the res but thats a last resort to be honest. I'll tone down the shadows next and see how things go. I'm a bit gutted because I remember that CPU was one of the most limiting factors in my old rig. So I got a really quick CPU if not the best model and it hasn't made much difference. Eyeing up a new rig, but I can only look we students don't have a grand hanging around in our bank accounts lol. PS. How much difference would it make if I up my RAM to say 6Gb? Or would it be more my GPU thats holding me back?
slowhand Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 What are you getting as far as FPS?you could try more Ram and an SSD? Hamblue Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 The 460 is a decent video card. If you up the ram double it to 8gb. Ram is cheap these days. You could also possibly replace that i3 chip with an i5 which should offer a decent performance boost. I believe they fit the same socket.
