I just logged in for the first time in a few days, only to be greeted by the apparent firestorm over the DCS World beta.

I read through the 9 page thread that got locked and saw another thread or two that got locked almost immediately.

I recognize that this is a touchy subject, but I have an honest question and I couldn't find an answer in the sanitized threads. I'm hoping I won't bring down too much punishment on myself for asking.

My question is this: Have we been given any reason by ED why the BS2 upgrade users are not allowed in the open beta? I saw nothing in the announcement, and all I saw in the sanitized threads was a bunch of speculation. Has there been an actual statement on why it is this way?

Hopefully ED can give us an answer in the next few days? and maybe a rough estimate as to when the BS2 upgrade users will get access. While I don't subscribe to the conspiracy theories about ED trying to make more sales out of this it does make me wonder if things like this might put people off being early adopters for any such future upgrades to software and potentially harm revenue to ED.

We'll get it when it's released. I guess not even ED really know exactly when that will be.

I'm wondering if they can release World while P-51D is still in beta or if they are interdependent.

might be so they get half the bug reports. I know its open beta which has a new meaning over the last few years but it really is Beta in that it does have plenty of bugs. You really shouldnt worry because there is a fair bit to go and they've come a very long way, it really looks like its so close.

As was communicated till now, upgrade users will have access after the finalized modules are released, i.e. out of beta.

I'd assume that for some reason it would take a disproportionate effort to have both BS2 versions in beta or rather keep releasing different patches as the beta goes on.

As ED has limited ressources we wouldn't want them to waste time on that which could better be used on the next DCS module would we? :D

I think that is the main problem with ED. They don't have the best communication with the community. I am a bit disappointed as well as I have the upgrade version, but than again, I can wait, no big deal. Some people though got quite angry in other threads, since it can be interpreted as ED not caring enough about their long term fans.

Viper has mentioned something about a deal with Starforce or something. Anyway, I think an official statement in the matter would calm everyone down.

The customer-developer relation can be a bit tricky to handle properly as there always will be dissatisfied customers. Also, people around here play other games, mainstream games as well, and with the current mainstream publishers' policies, it's mostly about getting the most profit not always in fair ways (day-one DLC's, overpriced products, customer-hurting DRM, you name it).

As much as I am far from putting ED with the same bag as EA or Activision, without explanations conspiracy theories will grow, since thanks to the aforementioned companies (an many others) the common opinion about game devs and publishers is that of greedy corporate bastards.

Again, I don't feel ED is anything like that, after all they do make quality niche products without compromise and keep improving them years after release, when they could have just been doing another Call of Duty or whatever. But, a bit more communication with the fans wouldn't hurt and it would definitely quiet all the rants. After all, we're here because we love high fidelity combat simulations and ED makes the best, so... guess who our favourite dev team is? ;)

Its been explained to me that because of the DRM for the BS upgrade is incompatible with DCS World at this time, and its a low priority.

As Nate said, no official statement yet.

As for this thread and others, members were given every chance to discuss the matter amicably without derailment. Countless warnings were ignored which necessitated closure. I am going to finalize this thread too as the OP's question has now been answered.

ED are aware of the concerns raised in the numerous threads and until an official announcement is received/made, we are all just going to have to exercise a wee bit of patience.
