Don't know if this has been already discussed but let's go:

Is DCS World compatible with Windows 8? Normaly it should be. Does anyone ever tried? (with consumer preview)

And secondary, do you find changes, improvements in FPS, stability,... ?

My experience is that if Windows8 was involved it would not help FPS at all.

although this excludes DCS world.

Still windows8 is the new WindowsME and (so far) about as useless. Stick with Windows7 x64 because if it aint broke........

I totally agree with this statement, it might now be Windows Me but Windows Vista for sure. I will be sticking with Window 7 X64 for a while.

Windows 8 was designed for tablets, smartphones and PC with touchscreens. From what I've heard it is a massive step backwards for Desktop users. I would say that Windows 7 x64 will be the only viable OS in the forseeable future.

If mainstream games ran on Linux I'd have absolutely no reason to use any version of windows.

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy and I've had both.

IMHO(and far from an expert) I'm not quite sure why game developers don't use opengl more? That (and i'm sure there's a little more to it) and you can distribute to linux, pc, mac...no?

bc OpenGL is old and limited and doesn't have that much potential.

I think that goes hand in hand with the graphics cards development that adjusted accordingly so game engines do too. You can't sell a game when you need a 4000 bucks quadro card to play it :)

Old and dated? Latest OpenGL specification is not even a year old, and you can make very pretty games with it. (Rage, X-Plane etcetera.) It's also very nice for companies that want portable code - Austin at X-Plane commented for example that they didn't need to do all that much to port X-Plane to iOS, precisely because they are using OpenGL. On the flip side, porting a DX-based graphics engine to another platform that does not have a DirectX-implementation is a big issue.

I'm not a graphics programmer, so I can't comment on which one is better than the other. In my opinion, that's largely an academic question anyhow - ED is invested into DX and switching to OpenGL would require a lot of work just to get back to where it is today with it's DX-based engine.

In all fairness it is by no means the same version that will be shipped but I've been using the Windows 8 Consumer Preview as my primary OS now for a while. This includes all my gaming including DCS and everything runs just as well as in my Windows 7 install. If there was a performance drop it's been so small as to not be noticeable, plus drivers will only improve from here and ect...

Regarding OpenGL capabilities, do you really find this API's retarded?

I don't think so...

in fact I read somewhere that a conventional desktop mouse/keyboard configuration will be retained - ppl will have the option to deactivate the touchy thing and get something like seven, maybe with some added candy. Anyway, I'm in serious doubt fps would improve.. the inverse is imho much more likely. As a pc gamer I cannot help to add that consoles are stagnating evolution of pc games. Dx11 have been out for a while, and only a handful titles exploit their potential, which would give us better quality and better performances. Why? We all know that: as consoles hardware wont' support something like dx11 devs stick to dx9 and.. ok, i'm going ot, but I'm rly lookin forward to nevada and dx11..

I have to admit after windows7x64, windows8 is nothing but a big mistake. How can you do so well finally and then take two steps backwards. I jumped over Vysta and I will now jump over windows8, in the hope windows 9 works and exceeds windows7x64. Big disappointment.
