I was flying a P-51D Blue against P-51D red AI, up above 15,000 feet and the AI outperformed me completely.. my plane became anemic and was very unstable.. how has everyone else done in this situation?

And when you try to turn with him all you get are high speed stalls unless you drop the flaps a little bit, which kills your speed. That other Mustang is Supermans' plane. Not realistic at all. :(

I just set up a mission with four mustangs flying around my base with no ammo, I go up, shoot them down, no problems. Except you need to have unlimited ammo due to the very weak API rounds......

And how is your aim?

Aim is very good and I am getting solid hits on it, even though I don't have any sort of head tracker and have to zoom in and out manually. I see strikes on it as flashes and usually the plane starts to leak fuel from the wings. You have to get up VERY close and pummel it before it breaks up.

Still as I said before, very unrealistic considering the damage you can see bing done in the gun cam clips from ww2...!!! ;)

I must admit, at first I found these AI to be unbeatable at any altitude. But after I dug in my heels a littel bit, got disciplined with my tactics, kept my speed in turns, dives and the like, I found myself running right with these AI with NO problems.

Then I discovered how the sight works and OMG Im knocking these things down easily 6-1.

However there is 1 trick, when setting up the planes you have to give the AI 100% fuel to make up for their lack of ammunition weight bug. And i even lighten the fuel load myself. Although that is a double edged sword.

The biggest thing is DONT YANK AND BANK!!! Hold the line, nice and smooth, and you'll find especially in those loop fight that the AI loves so much, will play right into your hands. Or more approprietly, your trigger finger.

Good luck out there!!!

It's all OK except that the bug with GW was fixed weeks ago... :)

Eh well, thats the only way I seem to be able to hang with them regardless. As I get better Ill equalize the fight a bit more.

You are right. The duel in equal planes often goes to stalemate even between two humans. Fighting with equal AI i often have equal fight and my little angle advantage that gives me opportunity to shoot at the enemy time to time. But very rare I am lucky to get its six and kill fast. As we add to AI more DM options it will lose power, guns, coolant, etc, and there will be more reasons to score a kill even if both wings are intact :)

People here saying that the AI is too good? There's a reason that not every WWII fighter pilot had 200 Kills... It's was bloody difficult! You had to be one of the best to get a kill. Fighter 1 on 1 with another guy, you have equal chance. Towards the end of the war, the allies had massive numerical superiority. Maybe, and this is just a thought, you're finally experiencing what it should be, a challenge! After all, this in not IL-2's run shoot, run shoot deal...

I hope you are putting equal work into an adversary of the mustang ;)

Cheers! Im having a great time so far!

Well I just tried 1vs1 against the AI. All I can say is that all the IL-2 experience I had over the years means nothing. I am always too slow and completely cannot turn with the AI.

I tried various things, boom and zoom is useless as the guy manages to face me almost instantly every time and accurately hit head on before I get a chance to aim. Rolling scissors, vertical scissors, spirals, you name it, the AI does not fall for any of these tricks and does not make mistakes. It seems impossible to shake him once he's on your six.

I'm not saying this should be easy, but some difficulty options regarding AI skill level would be nice. I've been dogfighting for the last 1.5 hour and I have never felt so exhausted after gaming in my life. Not to mention the feeling of being completely worthless. :(

The AI has years of virtual P-51 experience, we have only been doing this for a few months :)

In a desperate act I resorted to cheating - 100% fuel for the AI, 30% for me - now it's a cakewalk. Never would have thought that weight plays that big a part. Anyway, once the AI goes defensive it really starts to suck, keeps going vertical even without the speed and altitude advantage.

I'm also very surprised at the .50 cal's power, if I manage to hit that is. Seems the K-14 still requires a fair amount of deflection.

AI Too Good?

I echo what a lot of you have been saying. I thought I knew enough about dogfighting to at least give a good account of myself...NO WAY.

I didn't know I would be up against Adolf Galland!!!

Guess I will try to vary fuel load as some of you have done.

Still pretty damn scary.

Actually it isn't that hard. If the the AI does not have to worry about ammo weight, then the player is screwed big time. A single 12,7mm round weighs around 117 grams, the Stang carries 1800 rounds, so that makes the AI around 210 kilogram lighter than the player, if fuel amount is equal. That is a lot!

All weight are taken in account both for human and AI. It was a bug in the earlier beta that was fixed. This is a video how to cook the AI P-51.

Any tips on prop pitch management? I could only see you tampered with it at the beginning. Do you adjust for climbing/diving only, or go with the standard combat 3000 RPM?

In IL-2 I noticed that keeping in in the "green line" generally makes you faster and less prone to those violent stall rolls when trying to manoeuvre with a lot of slip kicking in. I believe in DCS it does not make a difference, and since the engine does not overheat I generally avoid any fiddling for now.

Also, does the AI experience blackouts? I once tried to follow it in a loop and the pilot lost consciousness.

Anyway, you blew my bubble with ammo weight fix.

The only thing we let AI to cheat a little is blackout. But if you track AI g-load you will see that it uses this cheat not so often - remember a 4 seconds time of O2 storage in the brain. It means that the human can tolerate up to 4-5 seconds of g-load more than hydrostatic based threshold g-load (3.5 - 4 g) before GLOC comes even without special briething technics.

By the way, you need not to exactly follow the loop - if you have blackout just reduce stick pressure. Do not follow with the plane - just with your eyes and it will be useful for your energy as well.

No prop rpm jerking is necessary. All that I did was an attempts to avoid prop overrevving as it begins to fire. We are about to implement detailed engine DM so the careful handling are becoming compulsory.

When you are fighting 61" and 3000 rpm must be constant. As well as 46 /2700 at climb or airshow pilotage( 42/2700 for the leader). 1600 - 2400 at cruise depending on the altitude to obtain 28-30".

Engine overheat will be a part of the works on detailed DM but it is not a matter of only engine power but IAS and altitude so keeping your energy is vital for engine temperature management.

So Airshow lead settings are

42 Manifold

3000 RPM

Correct??

:pilotfly::joystick::doh:

Sorry - 2700 of course. Fixed.
