Let's see, my biggest blunder so far is either ... well, a few days ago I tried to land with my gear up, and a few days before that I took off with my APU still running. Hurr. I've probably done worse, but with a memory like that ...

Posted
I have done that once. I finally started using the autopilot while I'm in a bank now.

A useful tip is to use the TAAF warning caution note... Enable it via the TGP control page (same page that you would turn latch on/set a new laser code). Next to OSB 20 it'll say TAAF 0. Set it to 35,000 to be safe (it'll be enabled below the altitude you set)

...That way, if you're heads down, and you exceed a certain amount of bank or pitch a big red box (aka warning caution note) will be displayed over the MFCDs. You can quickly dismiss it with TMS left short if you're deliberately flying like a maniac :D

Forgetting to enable nose wheel steering. I will be taxiing and say to myself wtf why can't I turn?! It's usually too late before I realize it and I crash into other planes =/

Don't forget as well there's a little airframe attitude graphic on the bottom left of the MFCD.

Taking off with the canopy up is fun...

Happened to me in multiplayer when the sim first came out, I actually hadn't noticed... but my wingman did!

Ha! Did this in MP a few weeks back. Took off, heard a 'bang', looked around but didn't see anything wrong, kept climbing. Then someone chatted that my canopy blew off. Ah, so THAT's what that noise was.

Continued the mission with no further issues.

Decided to buzz GG for the lols, not realizing that he was on an attack run. I swoop past him just in time to intercept the mav he launched.

Haha! I had something similar happen to me on my second MP flight during taxi with a 4-ship. I pressed the F2 key to check the outside view for wingtip clearance with the HAS, but I must've had a key assignment wrong somewhere...

It didn't switch the view, but it did cause my NWS to hardover and I couldn't get it unstuck. If I constantly jiggled the rudder pedals, I could kinda go in a general direction. But I only went a few hundred feet looking like I had no idea how to steer the airplane before my left main hit the grass and I spun to stop, stuck.

My sensitive ego was bruised.

Then there was the time I forgot that my key assignments were different between the tester's build and my normal install. That one led me to open the canopy instead of cancelling the Master Caution during a single-engine approach for my checkride.

Ugh. lol.

Getting shot in the face by a t72 :(

Replay after it, I actually saw the shell coming up and meeting me clean on the chops.

Hehe...

I did this to an A-10 pilot the other day, who thought it would be cute to do a low angle strafing run on the T-72 I was driving. Took his entire left wing off with a 125mm APFSDS round :)

Hmm... my worst failure was coming online once after getting only a few hours of sleep for a few days in a row. I get in the squad's server we were running for training and screwing off. I start annihilating all the vehicles and static objects at the base without even thinking about it- we often would have fun just blowing crap up around the base (we'd just reset the mission if we wanted them back). So I line up on a nice juicy row of planes (the mission creator had placed several static object planes all over the base). I'm so tired it doesn't even register to me that the plane is an A-10 taxiing, and about to take the runway. I blow him away with a 200 round burst. He wasn't too happy.

I once came back from a campaign mission and realized i never put my gear up

How did you manage to deploy weapons with the gear down?

you need to have the wheel on the ground to activate "Ground safe", if I remember correct.

edit: most embarrassing moment must have been, when I rolled over perfectly aligned with the AAA ZSU-23 hit the trigger and... nothing happened! I forgot to enable the master arm switch. Let's put it like that: I did not get away with it :D

No, weapons are safe when gear is down (unless I'm very confused).

But you can disable Ground Safe.

Of course, but that's only something you do if you realise your wheels are down.

It's weight on wheels that activates the ground safety, not the gear being down. The same goes for just about every aircraft out there.

In that case the sim is discrepant, because I can't fire with extended gear (airborne).

Confirmed. When the wheel is down even in mid-air at 250 kts it is not possible to fire weapons.

DSMS shows 'weapons off'

Indeed, that does appear to be the behaviour in sim. Not sure if it's correct though as the WoW functions are not described in the manuals I have.

It is entirely possible of course that the aircraft has a switch that inhibits weapon release with the gear in the down position, separate from the weight on wheels switch. Just like the AGM-65s launch being inhibited with flaps extended.

Yep WoW. I've had an instance when one main gear was stuck down and was still able to fire and release weapons.

Huh? We've just tested it (see above) and that's not how it is in 1.2.0.

Perhaps it's changed. To reiterate, in 1.2.0, weapons are safe whenever gear is extended.
