These new advanced actions have been introduced in DCSW 1.2.1.

Escort (AI planes or player or client Host only)

Follow (planes OR Helicopters only on AI, player or client host)

Land (helicopters only)

Follow allows you to set any aircraft type to 'follow' another aircraft type at a relative position based on x (fore & -aft), z (-port & starboard), y (above & -below). Any plane (regardless of TASK set) can be set to follow any plane & any heli can be set to follow any heli. Note: only helicopters will engage any enemy when set to follow.

Escort Planes will only engage other enemy aircraft when set to 'Escort'. Else if set to 'follow' only the lead aircraft will engage if so equiped. The only aircraft at the moment that can use Escort are those set to ESCORT or SEAD in their Airplane Group TASK.

picture.php?albumid=523&pictureid=4829

The relative position of the Escort aircraft is same as for the 'follow' action with 2 added parameters; Engage distance, which is the distance from the escort aircraft at which it will leave the formation and engage the enemy aircraft category as set in the checkbox parameters directly below (double click to select). This is provided that the enemy are detected by the escorting aircrafts onboard eqpt or awacs. Diag below

picture.php?albumid=523&pictureid=4830

Both follow and escort can be set at any waypoint as a waypoint action or used in a triggered action. The LAST WPT when ticked allows you to set at which WP of the GROUP aircraft ('New Airplance Group' in the example) you want to stop following or escorting. The aircraft will then proceed directly to the next WPT it is yet to sequence on its route.

Setting a heli to follow another heli that has yet to take-off will force the following heli to orbit nearby until lead heli gets airborne.

Land

Allows the mission builder to land any helicopter on flat ground anywhere on the map. There is no longer a need to place a FARP or land at a base. Selecting Perform Task -> Land will display another line from the waypoint with a triangle depicting the land point. Hold the triangle and move it to the point you wish the Heli to land at.

Apart from the Conditions there is only 1 parameter LAND DURATION. When ticked it allows you to set the time from wheels ON to wheels OFF. The example belows shows 1 minute.

.

picture.php?albumid=523&pictureid=4832

You can place multiple Land actions along your route. Note however, currently there is no way of getting the helicopter to shutdown at the 'Land' position. It will sit there with rotors running indefinately (or until fuel runs out!). Beware setting a helo to land on sloping ground make cause it to slide fall over and explode.

Examples & Issues

Attached is a couple of simple examples of missions using these new actions.

No known issues at this time, however ..

With any new feature in a complex mission editor, it is almost impossible to test every conceivable sequence/use. If you do find a bug or something not working as expected then please post it up so that we can check it out and get it fixed.

@Druid: these new commands work AI on AI only?

Tried to set one F18 to "follow" and one F18 to "escort" my self piloted A10. On mission start the two F18 just fly circles.

When I shift "my" A10 to KI it works.

Currently its AI on AI only but testers version has been enhanced to include AI on player. I have asked for it to be included in an autoupdate soon. AI on MP client does not work and may be done some time in the future (its in the feature request box).

EDIT: escort on player & follow on player now included in version 1.2.2 (note on player, it will not work on a MP Client).

Nice Thanks! One question tho how can you tell how far is position x, y, and z?

It's in feet from the centre of the lead object.

Example: you want a F-16 fly near KC-135

you set the F-16 to follow/escort KC-135 with

x = -300

y = 200

z = -400

F-16 will be

300 feet behind

200 feet higher

400 feet on the left

add a F-18

x = 500

y = -150

z = 600

F-18 will be

500 feet in front

150 feet lower

600 feet to the right

of KC-135

Thanks for those infos ;)

Considering the "land" option,

Do we still need a "FARP" placed in order to refuel and ream or the proximity of the vehicles is sufficient.

Or is it just to put the IA helos in stand-by somewhere ?

You still need a FARP or base to re-arm & refuel at the moment. This function is more of a land somewhere, wait x time, then launch again.

As Leto said but it's either feet or meters depending on wether you have your options->gameplay->units set to imperial or metric.

(I really hope that we don't need them.. but... I believe that we still need)

The thing is, helicopters are different from planes. An airplane by it's nature wants to fly, and if not interfered with too strongly by unusual events or by a deliberately incompetent pilot, it will fly. A helicopter does not want to fly. It is maintained in the air by a variety of forces in opposition to each other, and if there is any disturbance in this delicate balance the helicopter stops flying; immediately and disastrously.

It is only feet if you have selected the s*** measurement system instead of the metric system :thumbup:

Thanks Druid

I always like so much your explanations of ME features (with examples!).

Is there a chance we get this feature to work with AI on HUMAN (player?) because now it only works with AI on AI right? And, even though it is fun to set a package of AI to do things, the best would be to be part of the party...

thanks

Does that mean it can now follow also the player aircraft, instead of only AI on AI?

I dont think so, it doesnt work for me...

Any hint on that Grimes?

If the follow and escort commands work with the human player, that would be one of the best additions for a while!

There must be bugs in it because half the time when I run test the plane that escort most of the time just goes back to base or just circles the base. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt. I think it needs tweaking.

You will have to be a little more specific with your problem. Attach your .miz file maybe.

Are you assigning an AI aircraft to follow an AI from ramp or runway take-off by any chance?

Yes in this instanced yes. I have the escort AI escorting me and the AI is a SEAD. I have it starting at the runway delayed 1min after I take off the AI will come online. Once I take off I hit F2 to see what the AI will do and it takes off and just circles the Airport. The AI only comes to Escort me only after Im being engaged by a SAM.

The Follow command is buggy too for helicopters.

I have been trying to get a UH-1 to follow a CH47 with both set to ramp start, which does not work. I also tried giving the UH-1 one waypoint with an orbit command and the follow command which does not work either.

The CH47 takes longer to start up than the UH-1, hence the waypoint and orbit command.

My mission file is attached:

yesterday evening the "follow" command works for an UH-1 on me, working as expected.

It was activated after about 4 mins of mission, by and advanced waypoint action :)
