Why am I doing all the work?

I can't believe that. There's an AWACS and F-15s cruising the stratosphere, are they really just going to sit there and ignore everything without saying a word while enemy fighters close on an aircraft that doesn't have a radar. That kind of callousness provides close competition for friendly fire.

Hmm, when I flew the missions that come with A-10C there was a lot of information coming from the AWACS about the air space you operate. 'New pop up group...etc.' if(!) you where tuned into the mission frequency, usually 124MHzAM... I agree it would be nice to have a description and walkthrough guide for a typical mission, especially for beginners.

Anyway there is this forum and these 'guides' are more or less here in the community posts.

As posted by others. The OSC is in charge and yes, he is responsible to say 'go' or 'no-go' for the packages.

Yes, as Eddy said, the AI is far from perfect and it would be nice, if the CAP would ask for permission to engage, if they acquired a suspect target.

All in all it is not lame, but complex and challenging to do the job of a wing leader in charge of a mission, but quite realistic and rewarding.

Even I was capable to learn what you need to do with the CAP and SEAD flights after some try and error.

The chance to decide when is the best point to unleash hell, is something I definitely like. I tell the CAP, when they should suppress enemy fighters and I decide, when I need additional CAS to mop up a tank platoon that blocks the path to an objective. Well, I'm in charge, that is the job :D

That's pretty much the issues though, and I suspect one of the factors the brought up the original post, you shouldn't have to tell them to do anything.

All in all it is not lame, but complex and challenging to do the job of a wing leader in charge of a mission, but quite realistic and rewarding.

You assume, incorrectly, that the package commander would/is supposed to micro manage package assets. In actual fact the package commander simply gives the order to push (or in other words, start the tactical phase of the mission), and the order to end the mission and the package to split (either when the objective is complete or it is necessary to abort the mission). As far as individual flight fullfilling their assigned roles, it's the job of the flight leads to make sure that happens.

If everything goes to plan, the pkg commander (who is very often also a flight lead and participating member of the package) will not have to give any order beyond the push and rtb instructions, and may not in fact even have to give those.

See above, simply not the case. You should give the order to push and rtb, but that is it. The TARCAP/Escort/SEAD Escort etc. flights attached to the package perform their own roles as per the briefed plans. Or in really simple terms, escort shouldn't need to be told to engage an air threat.

But again, the AI in DCS (or any other sim, ever) at the moment simply isn't able to act in a very realistic manner, and possibly never will be able to behave in a totally realistic manner. It is monumentally difficult to make AI that even appears to approximate what a human would do in a given situation.

Fortunately the way DCS is heading, those of us who do our flying online may not have to deal with AI limitations forever.

As a further point, having to call in SEAD in the game is a bit redundant when they don't actually come, it just pulls a trigger that makes the SAMs instantaneously detonate for no apparent reason (in single player anyway).

Wow, seriously? :wassat:

If that is what the mission designer has set to happen then yes, on the other hand it could indeed call in AI SEAD aircraft, its all down to the individual building the mission and how they want to make it.

That's definitely not how it works in the Georgian Oil War campaign, unless it's changed recently. In which missions have you seen this?

Hideout. Not one of the Tornado IDS aircraft uses a single missile. I was looking forward to watching some Tornade SEAD but they just flew round in circles.

Good topic:

All combat flightsims suffer from this problem.

They always want you to be the leader that controls everything.

I would also like to see an option where you could fly the wing instead of leader or even worse, have to command every plane in the entire attack group yourself. Always found that a way to big step after the initial learning process.

Win11 Pro 64-bit, Ryzen 5800X3D, Corsair H115i, Gigabyte X570S UD, EVGA 3080Ti XC3 Ultra 12GB, 64 GB DDR4 G.Skill 3600. Monitors: LG 27GL850-B27 2560x1440 + Samsung SyncMaster 2443 1920x1200, HOTAS: Warthog with Virpil WarBRD base, MFG Crosswind combat pedals, TrackIR4, Rift-S.

Personal Wish List: A6 Intruder, Vietnam theater, decent ATC module, better VR performance!

Well, as stated earlier, it's only that way in Hideout because that's what the mission designer intended. The SEAD flights in GOW actually engage with their HARMs.
