Cali Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 There is no best, don't get a dual card and get the fast in either and you'll be fine. I love my 670 and there are people that love their 79XX's. i7-4820k @ 3.7, Windows 7 64-bit, 16GB 1866mhz EVGA GTX 970 2GB, 256GB SSD, 500GB WD, TM Warthog, TM Cougar MFD's, Saitek Combat Pedals, TrackIR 5, G15 keyboard, 55" 4K LED
G-Lock91 Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 NVidia! Should prob move this to the PC Hardware forum. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] "If they can make penicillin out of moldy bread, they can certainly make something out of you" -Muhammad Ali WIN 7 64-bit SP1 | AMD Phenom II X4 955 | 8.0 GB RAM | NVidia GeForce GTX 550Ti | CH Pro Throttle | CH Fighterstick | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR5
martinistripes Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Depends... are you comparing two cards at the same price range or are you comparing where money is no object. In the first case, ATI wins. In the second case NVidia wins. Valve Index | RTX 4080 (Mobile) | i9-14900HX @ 2.20 GHz | 32GB RAM
Madone Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Only you can decide, but as general rule, the NVidia's cards are consuming more power and produce more heat but are more a bit more efficient (or not^^), AMD (my case) provides a reliable and instinctive driver software, cheaper and good stuff but sometimes they offer less efficiency for the same scale, I think. That said, you're asking a question that nobody can answer by Nvidia or AMD, everybody will defend its own opinion, both brands are offering different and nice GPU's, there's no bad or good brand, if you want to hit the "very high end", glance to NVidia, if you want sometimes "mid range", look for some test reviews between AMD and NVidia cards, to see the ingame performances, and see what card is better for your games, it's really helpful. Keep the CPU importance in mind as well. JG14_Smil Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 I have both. I am using AMD, but if I had more vram with my nvidia, I would use them as a first choice (3g 7970 vs 2g GTX680(x2). I am using a large multimonitor setup. As stated, they are both good.
Megagoth1702 Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 (edited) Oh boy, please no "what's better" thread. :( There is no real "better". Just set yourself a BUDGET, your maximum amount of money you wanna spend. Then look for the fastest SINGLE core graphics card you can find and grab it. The differences between nvidia and AMD for DCS are barely noticable, especially if you know what you're doing configuring drivers/software etc. to work FOR you. For example - nvidia users have a lot of options in their driver settings, AMD users have less. But then again if you use tools such as RadeonPRO or nvidia inspector at the end of the day you get more or less the same settings that you can configure as you want. Exuse my bad english. Bottom line is - 1.set budget 2.look for benchmarks of GPUs 3.get fastest single core graphics card 4.profit Edited December 12, 2012 by Megagoth1702 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] System specs:2500k @ 4.6 GHz 8GB RAM HD7950 OC'd Win7 x64 Posting tracks to make your DCS better - attention bump incoming!
SNAFU Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Hi, Thought about getting a GF GTX 660 Ti - 2 GB But I have no clue about that configurations. Is that a single GPU card? (Using an ATI 6950 2GB for almost 2 years now, is the upgrade to the GFX worth 300€ if you are focusing mainly on DCS, Arrma2, RoF?) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Unsere Facebook-Seite
Megagoth1702 Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 (edited) Yep, it's single core. But I am not sure whether the upgrade is is worth it. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/510?vs=647 Also - DCS is very CPU intensive. I have a 6870 and while about 70% of low FPS are due to my GPU not being fast enough, I am sure your 6970 does much better and maybe for YOU the CPU is the bottle neck? Who knows. Why do you want to grab an Nvidia card? You can probably get a faster AMD card for that money. I am not sure on this but this has been the case forever, haha. EDIT: That benchmark site above is pretty awesome. Click around. I just found out a lot of cool stuff, haha. Make sure to check out the 7950 card, it's pretty good. Weirdly enough some cards dominate in certain games and then it's the other way around for OTHER games... Like the 660ti owning the 7950 in battlefield 3 but in many other games the 7950 is faster. Weiiird. If I had the money I would always go with AMD, because I dislike nvidias business overall. But it is of course up to you completely. Evil.Bonsai Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 I use a radeon HD5770 w/22" monitor at 1680x1050. Works great.
PoleCat Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 Both manufacturers make great cards and produce excellent drivers. There is no better here only different reasons for choosing one over the other. Out http://www.104thphoenix.com/
BHawthorne Posted December 12, 2012 Posted December 12, 2012 (edited) The question shouldn't be "best for DCS", but rather "best at something in particular for DCS" and why. Be mindful that most people don't not know the difference between qualitative and quantitative statements. Best is qualitative -- there is no right answer to qualitative statements. I'll give you a few examples... NVIDIA is best at stereoscopic 3D, because of it's integration of NVIDIA 3D Vision at the driver level. AMD is best at mutli-display, because it has significantly more spanning modes and port options than NVIDIA at a driver level. Even then those aren't absolutes. If you're just doing 1080p single screen and no S3D, either NVIDIA or AMD will work great provided you can get the best single GPU for your budget range. DCS looks great using a 670 or 680 for NVIDIA or a 7950 or 7970 for AMD. Edited December 12, 2012 by BHawthorne
