Hi,

I purchased a copy from Steam two weeks ago and am itching to jump into some co-op missions with others but the multiplayer list is usually empty. I know my multiplayer works because when my friend creates a server, it pops out onto the list and I'm able to join.

I'm wondering, since this game has been out for a while, is no one playing multiplayer anymore?

Unfortunately, steam does no longer update the version they are offering, so you are most likely running a very old version that no one else is using any more. The good news is that you can use the key that you got from steam with the downloads from EDs own site, if you whish to get up to date.

If you want to update, you will need to download DCS World and the A-10C module and install them in that order.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

The version on Steam is the old Standalone version of DCS A10.

What you want to do is download DCS World:

And the DCS A10 module for DCS World:

http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/index.php?scr=product&ProductId=8&end_pos=136&lang=en

Install World, then the A10 module and use your A10 product key from Steam to activate the module.

You can delete the Steam version then.

GASP

Holy cow... you just blew my mind.

I wish I could return my Steam copy and get the "real" copy.

Kind of a horrible thing to pay for a game that Steam won't update anymore.

Thank you very much, I will try that, right now.

You're not out anything by getting a Steam copy. The key Steam gave you *is* a "real" copy.

DCS even has an autoupdate function now, so there really isn't any feature of Steam you're missing. Unless of course you want to tally the obscene amount of hours you've played it.

Hmmm...I have several dozen games bought on steam. I think it's one of the best, if not THE best, purchase option.

It can't be THE best if you get an outdated product without even the slightest remark that you have to go somewhere else to get the latest version.

Also, if tomorrow Steam goes out of the air, what will you do then?

well I'd rather take THE first best, over steam which is THE second best, after ED store of course, which can be found on THE line.

AWAITING ED NEW DAMAGE MODEL IMPLEMENTATION FOR WW2 BIRDS

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

Exactly what I was going to say.

Don't regret Steam for one second- it's an easy method of payment that Is safe and fast when you have an account. It even has easy product key retrieval. Some people (me included) leave the original (1111) on the machine- the two copies are completely separate and quad 1 by and large is still the most stable (IMO). It is not integrated with dcs world, however and as you have seen few if any still use it on the mp environment.

With 1111 already installed you should be able to download dcsw and a10 module and not even need your product key. However If you do it's easy to fetch it from steam. Also every key is good for 10 activations- you just can't use any two of those activations on the same server- nor online at the same time. (You couldn't run a server on one and fly it on another with the same reg key)

Welcome to the community.

A specious argument. One could just as easily ask the following: what will you do tomorrow if your house burns down and all your belongings go with it? Clearly, by such implied logic, owning belongings is foolish because you might one day lose them.

Nothing is permanent, and all financial transactions involve risk, so it is invalid to treat Steam purchases as a special case when you point out that one day Steam might shut down. The first computer game I ever bought was Command and Conquer: Red Alert, and of the two CDs that the game shipped on, I lent one to a friend and never got it back, and the other is too scratched as to be playable. Did I make a foolish purchase because 17 years later the game media would be lost or damaged beyond repair? Hardly. Likewise, just because it is hypothetically possible that Steam could shut down does not mean that it is a likely in the near to medium term future. In the long run, Steam will surely one day shut down, but then to paraphrase Keynes, in the long run we're all dead, so why worry about it?

But to answer your question, if Steam shuts down, I'd just torrent the thing, figuring that it's fair use to make back ups of software you have legitimately purchased, that I legitimately purchased the software in question, and that the torrent represents my backup.

Sorry to derail, but this is a pet-peeve of mine.
