Mt5_Roie Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Don't want to be " bad mouth " but, all in all, there is no ONE video on youtube about this mighty heli that show great pilot skills. On each one, the virtual pilot is struggling to survive with yo yo-ing heli... The only stable one I saw was when Furia was at controls ( real heli pilot ). I was flying with a squad mate last night who actually flies helicopters for a living and he made it look effortless. While I was trying to just hover and not crash on landing, he was practicing autorotations. Coder - Oculus Rift Guy - Court Jester
Agg Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Had my first flight this morning, and loved it! Took off, flew a lap around Batumi, and landed. The landing was'nt the best, but at least I did'nt break anything :P Hueyman: feel free to show us how its done ;)

Maybe you guys should have spend more time on flying school ( other simulators such X-Plane ) while waiting for this one ;-) When I see a simple approach is soo hard for some of the videos I saw, how can I imagin a quick landing in a hot LZ, and take off just after ? ;-) Pretty sure this sim will be much more challenging than it sounded for many ;-) Hueyman You're right, that's why it's so great. You are going to have to put the hours into this one. Practice practice practice, the only way you are going to learn is stick time. Which is exactly how it is in real life. I'm sure ANY pilot, RL or Simulated, would struggle flying a heli with just 48hrs practice, unless you already have the time in with RL helicopters, I doubt we will start seeing smooth flying for at least 2 - 3 Weeks, and that is with at least 5 hrs flying a day. However once we master this, damn it's going to be an amazing feeling This is the first simulated aircraft, where I truly feel, it's as hard as the real thing. Hueyman Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Hueyman: feel free to show us how its done ;) What would I give to get a new PC to run this... you can't imagine :cry::cry: The good thing here is as you stated roiegat, real pilot feel like at home ;-), so it really must be " realistic " Once you know flying a R-22, you can be a good pilot of virtually any rotary wing, as this one is really a flea on the sticks. I promise you I'll make a video of my firsts seconds into the sim, hopefully next year I'll have a new PC... But if all goes well for me I should be in a real helicopter ;-) Ah la la guys.. you make me so envious with all your anecdotes and videos ;-) Enjoy it as much as it deserve ! Mt5_Roie Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 So I work for a big fortune 500 company as a lead engineer. I occasionally work with the pilots who fly our executives around. For hops between sites they have several Sikorsky helicopters. I work close to the landing pad at our site so I hear them all the time. So I emailed the lead pilot who I now well the link to this video: I asked her if she had any tips. Her response: OMG I am LMAO. Sorry. It actually looked pretty good considering it was your first flight. I would have to think that flying that sim is probably harder than the real thing. And I can't give you any real tips, because I don't know what you are using for controls but I saw the cyclic moving quite a bit, and in the real helicopter the less you move the controls, the smoother it is. I emailed her back with the controller info. But I do think my stick could use some tweaking. Coder - Oculus Rift Guy - Court Jester
heloguy Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Took it for another spin around Tblisi. Still feels way too squirrely. The main differences between a Hawk and a Huey should be performance ( ie engine power effects) and A/C reaction due to rotor system differences (fully articulated vs. semi-rigid). The 206, while different than the Huey, definitely seemed more stable in a hover than this sim. In flight, the same. The sim oscillates too much in the roll channel. I've flown instruments in a 206 and had to touch the cyclic less after setting trim than I do in the pattern in this sim. i9 12900k @ 4.9ghz, 64gb RAM Nvidia RTX 3090 Windows 11 x64 Pimax Crystal VP Force Rhino w/RS F16GRH, Virpil TCS Rotor Plus AH-64 Collective, BRD F1 Pedals, WH Throttle, FSSB R3 w/WH Grip, PointCTRL v2
geloxo Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 My two cents: impressive, full stop. I hope more helos like this one come in the future. DCS is too focussed on aircrafts but war simulation also needs good choppers as well (transport and attack). You can take my money in advance for such things :-P
heloguy Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 That's awesome dude. Not arguing - & it's still Beta, but I wonder how the 206 would feel if you tried flying it while holding the cyclic 4 inches from where it came out of the floor rather than at the top. what is a 1/4 inch movement on the real cyclic has to be a 1/16 inch movement on your little short joystick.... Cheers.

I hear you man, but I have my cyclic floor mounted with an extension. I've tried increasing the curvature, but really it seems to deaden the input too much. Linear is fine for a hover, and easy to work with for forward flight I've found (as in the Dodo Sim for FSX and FS9). It's not the inputs that bothers me, but the oscillation during flight. Without any movement, the helicopter wants to move quite a bit laterally, and seems too sensitive in the pitch. I watched Furia's video, and I noticed the same side-to-side movement. I don't think a properly tracked-and-balanced Huey would oscillate so much, based on my experience with various helicopters with various rotor configurations. i9 12900k @ 4.9ghz, 64gb RAM Nvidia RTX 3090 Windows 11 x64 Pimax Crystal VP Force Rhino w/RS F16GRH, Virpil TCS Rotor Plus AH-64 Collective, BRD F1 Pedals, WH Throttle, FSSB R3 w/WH Grip, PointCTRL v2
ARM505 Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I also have a floor mounted stick, a Cougar with Cubpilots Hall effect sensor mod, and thank goodness for that, because the helicopter's super sensitive anyway. I fly fixed wings for a living, and have (very) limited time in an R22, but I reckon if an aircraft was this.....wobbly....more people would be dead. I've trained a lot of people in light aircraft, and while I know helicopters require more hand/eye co-ordination, this one feels a little random and harsh. That being said, I don't think they've got too much to tweak to get it spot on. My first hover had pretty much the same result as my first hover in an R22, ie hovering, but wobbling around quite a bit, and can't stay over the same spot on the ground. In straight and level, it seems to swing around a bit more than I would have expected too. I've watched larger helo's being flown a few times from inside (Oryx, South Africa's version of the Puma), and they're pretty stable, although the cyclic is always being moved, it's small smooth movements. Again, never flown the real Huey though, but I seem to have to use more cyclic than I would have thought. I'm really enjoying the challenge though, and look forward to however they tweak it! There is actually one down here in Cape Town, occasionally hear it thwop-thwopping around, hard to miss!
PeroperoDokkiri Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 I am going to record a short video of me flying after adjusting axis. My guess is Belsimtek did actually made controlls realistic to the point You need a proper realistic long cyclic dedicated to helicopters to fly it. I have a question to Furia- what kind of joystic/ axis combination did You use while recording Your videos? [sIGPIC]http://i55.tinypic.com/21oydlx.jpg[/sIGPIC] ヒューイ最高!o(≧∇≦o)
ARM505 Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 (edited) Weirdly enough, I just had another go, this time with weapons and it all seemed a lot easier. Maybe something sunk in in the meantime? Maybe the weight helped a bit? But I could hover ok (ha ha), and while it didn't seem 'odd' in the cruise either. The only thing I still felt was noticeably out of place was the 'pitch penduluming' if I could call it that, while trying to hover - I find it very hard to get it nice and smoothly damped in pitch while hovering, it's always going nose up or nose down. But who knows, maybe I suck too much still :) Oh, and the 'fall out the sky' pitch and roll when bottoming the collective - that seems a bit abrupt too, but maybe it does that? Edited May 1, 2013 by ARM505
Vlerkies Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Arm, the devs said this ship handles very differently with extra weight onboard. Have you setup the pilot trimmer? That helped me quite a bit with regard to not over correcting the pendulum type effect. Cowboy10uk Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Ive just finished my first full 3 hours flying, At first I was all over the place, im using a warthog, with extension and axis as default, Anyway as the hrs progressed, I noticed my muscle memory was getting better, my takeoffs was getting smoother, and my flying wasnt rolling anymore, after 2 hrs, i could fly a semi ok formation, and throw her round the skies and perform a hover ish, but without killing myself. While my landings still left a lot to be desired, i was managing to land with damanging the aircraft, although my crew went through a fair number of pants. Hr 3, and i was doing quick landings onto the pad, not great but getting smoother, I could lift off into a hover and not drift all over the place, and i could tailchase the other helicopters in the circuit quite easily. Basiclly, Practice, repetitive practise and more practise, and it comes, before you know it, you will be wondering what all the fuss is about. This aircraft is so rewarding to learn.
