PC shutting down.

Started last night, I got in, PC off.. This was aboout 3 in the morning. Then all of a sudden I heard it boot up. Some kind of ghost!? So I shut it down...Went to bed, happened again. So I shut it down once more for it to happen again so I turned the switch off at the mains, thought I'll deal with that tomorrow...

 

Turning the system on today and it's already shut down about 5 times, just a normal shut down sequence. closes all programs etc. Strange thing is it sometimes restarts me straight into BIOS.

 

Event viewer says 'The kernel power manager has initiated a shutdown transition.'

 

I've run a malwarebytes scan, and MSE...altho I know I should do a more thorough scan maybe. Any tips of what to use or how to do so would be helpful here. I've cleaned temp folder and prefetch folders but hmpf, I am a little baffled.

 

Right now I've got a strange suspicion that it could be when I run Steam. Not wholly sure but as of yet I haven't logged in and I'm able to post this fine. I just don't know what else to check, really. Of course the random start up last night was seemingly nothing to do with OS. However I checked wake on features in BIOS, all disabled.

 

Any ideas?

Try disabling Boot To LAN in BIOS, in you haven't already tried it... the 77 chipset is a weird beastie indeed (I'm sure it is self aware and has emotional issues)

Could be a virus (check for viruses with multiple scanners) or a hardware issue. Heat related possible, bad or failing CPU fan (Check CPU fan). Maybe a bad or failing power supply. Test or try another. (Check PSU fan as well. Make sure it is turning). Bad or failing memory. Test with Memtest.

Hmm if I have time to type this.... Shutting down a bit more readily now..Temps fine. Fans fine. Backing up, gonna reinstall...

Anyway, need to deactivate DCS stuff now....CAn't find how to do that, it's been a while.

 

I'm wondering if it's SSD issues.

Check the mainboard wake-up settings. Somewhow it may be set "everyday at 3 a.m." :)

That's a point... it could be the PSU putting the machine into sleep mode

I would bet the problem is hardware but a Windows reinstall doesn't take long. The quick start guide for any module will have the deactivate info.

This solved the problem for me. When the machine shuts down with the Wifi adapter enabled, the Wifi LED will go off (instead of staying on like before).

 

As far as what "ErP Ready" mode is, I am not familiar with it. ASUS said there is a Wifi wakeup and this will disable it. Still doing some research. If anyone would like to explain it, that would be awesome!

 

EDIT: In the manual, under the "ErP Ready" section, it says, "This item allows user to switch off some power at S5 to get the system ready for ErP requirement."

 

S5 state is the shutdown/OFF state. So it makes sense when it says it switches off power at the S5 state; it switches off power to the Wifi module, essentially disabling it and not allowing it to turn the machine on. Beyond that, I'm not sure what the purpose of ErP is.

Enabling ErP disables delivery of standby power to the WiFi Module (and other SouthBridge Functions) that allow it to boot the system when it detects packets coming in.

 

My Mainboard has a Ton of "Off State" functions for Audio, LAN and Video that I had to disable.

Well...it wasn't sorted until about half an hour ago...At least I think it's sorted..

 

 

Seems as if it was a problem with windows update. Found a post with a similar problem and a link from a reply to repair windows update seems to have worked..

Gonna have to start thinking about pullingthe SSD and installing on a normal HDD...I suspect SSD weirdness...

Unplug everything. Turn it on. Wait a day. Every day add a new device. Im suspecting possibly PSU failure. Either flaking or delivering dirty power and the rest of the system is being smart and protecting itself

Ya know what....I made the power button do nothing, instead o power off/sleep etc...

problem solved.

 

 

Turned on in the midde o the night so I reseated the connections on the mobo and am about to change the setting so the power button now functions.

 

Amazing...what a load o bother for something so simple!!!!! I feel like a right fool

Sticky/Dirty Power Button :)

 

 

going by the Event Log saying it was a clean user initiated shutdown,

 

it's either a power button short/issue or a software configuration/conflict.

 

-Power button sticks/dirty

-Power button spring broken

-Power Button short (cause random button presses)

-Power Management Software (ie APC Software) shutting down due to battery levels (if Applicable)

-Hidden Virus causes repeated power offs.

 

 

I'd look at the button, might be sticking or stuck on, spring is prolly worn so it's easily pressed, or simply has loose wires internally that occasionally short simulating a button press.

 

 

Personally, I disabled the Case Power/Reset Buttons and use the ones on my mainboard :)

Since i dont Power On or Off that much, nor require a hard reboot, it's just easier to leave them disconnected.

Yeh button feels fine to the press but maybe internally there are a few wires going dodgy.

 

If I have time I'll have a look, if it happens again that is.

 

For now I'm thinking reseating the pins on the header might have solved it. how do you use the ones on the mainboard? Explain! :)
