Are there things missing from windows 7 x64 Home basic, that DCS might need (performance wise i guess)

I am planing to build my first ever simulators dedicated PC and thinking if i would be better off maybe with the lightest Windows 7 x64 version available.

Win7 Home Premium.

Anything more is just money spent for features you are very unlikely to use. (And that are irrelevant for DCS.)

That said, Win8 isn't all that bad. I use it on the laptop.

Win7 x64 home premium right now. If I have to reformat I might run ultimate again, but for the general user, you don't need it.

And I wouldn't touch win8 even if I received it on a free computer.

Agreed, I've had a weeklong experience with Windows 8 that was bad enough for me to revert back to 7 x64 (high DPC latency issues amongst other things)

I don't find Win 8 to be that objectionable either, once you add Classic Shell that is. ;)

For my sim machine, though, I am running Win 7 64 Home Premium which works just fine.

EDIT: As for price, Amazon US has a $3 difference in price between Win 7 64 HP and Win 8 (for the OEM edition).

+ 1

Installed it and never looked back (and you have the option to sneak around in the new Windows environment if you which). Win 8 runs smooth.

Personal Wish List: A6 Intruder, Vietnam theater, decent ATC module, better VR performance!

Isn't it a good idea to install as castrated version as possible? For a gaming system that uses only 3 GB of ram (I know it's unlikely) I would even go for Win 7 Starter, which is 32-bit only. If we're considering 64-bit versions - is Home Premium the most castrated 64-bit capable version?

Well, Home Basic can do it as well, but is limited to 8GB; which sorely limits future expansion capabilities. Worse, Home Basic does not come with 64-bit in retail; only in prefab. You also lose some not-so-important media stuff like some decoders and so on.

Also, I think it is limited to "3rd world" only as far as retail goes.

Starter, btw, is limited to 2 GB, not 3-4, does not support multiple monitors and a few other things that might be nice to have. Also, again, it is not available in retail, only prefab.

Agreed. I don't like the UI (I'm starting to get old I guess), but there's no real showstoppers aside from just not liking it. I wouldn't buy Win8 to replace my current Win7, but whenever I decide to replace the workstation/sim machine, it will probably get Win8 along with the rebuild.

Hey all, I have been using Windows 8 for about 6 months. I also dislike the new ui, so I bought Start8 from StarDock for $5. and it lets you choose for start up to go directly to the desktop with a start button just like Win 7. To let all of you know, ALL of my games and sims run better and Win8 loads faster than Win7.
