Trouble starting DCS - May give up on spending $ on such programs!

Just use the latest DX9 - DCS is a DX9 program it will not work without it.

Also what you've posted makes it sound like your old HDD was failing ... if that is the case, then I question the wisdom of copying stuff from it to the new HDD and expecting it to work, as that data may now be corrupted.

Tharos,

It does not work even if I try to run from the newly installed folder. (i.e. change new renamed DCS folder and then rename the copied one)

Re: DX9 I try to install that but I just get a message telling me that I have a later version of DirectX and it will not install. Must I try and force install DX9 or is the later version DX10/11 adequate? and ... how do I force install DX9?

DirectX 9/10/11 are not mutually exclusive and will happily coexist. You should think of them as entirely separate APIs.

So as a gamer you would need 9.0c, 10.1 and 11.1 (or 11.0) all installed.

Check c:\windows\syswow64 for d3*.dll files. If there is a d3d9.dll file you probably have DirectX 9 already installed. If not, you need to install it, DCS Word will not run without it.

eXpert,

Thanks for your "glimmer of light on the horizon?" I will have to check finances, remaining bandwidth etc but out of desperation have been toying with going that route. I may look at uncapped as messing about with 5gb a month is no longer working with all this modern stuff.

I originally installed DCS World from a PC Pilot magazine cd and purchased the A10 key from site and updated it.

May give it a go once I get time and bandwidth sorted.

Will let you know how it goes and also look at tweaking once things are finally running.

eXpert. I have seen this before, why would you want to do this?

IMPORTANT: DO NOT INSTALL DCS INTO PROGRAM FILES

CREATE A FOLDER LIKE C:\GAMES\DCS\ AND INSTALL IN IT!

OP didn't want to do all of that, (although now he is tiring of the search) He knows how to reinstall all he wanted to save money, time and his bandwidth.

Is it possible his friends suggestion to "Rename" the folder upon copying it over to the new drive is causing his error? The exe is looking for XX.dll and can't find it as it is now YY.dll in his renaming?

I wish I had made an error in the renaming giving us the simple solution we looking for but it is not. I renamed the newly installed DCS World folder to DCS World New and then copied over the DCS World from the old HD and ran the sim from that. Whatever I've run from is the correctly named folder.

I even tried copying DCS World Folder to c:\ but still no luck.

I must say I was told some time back recommendation to only install Sturmovik and RTW with their mods in C:\ and not Program Files or Program Filex86 so maybe some merit in what eXpert says. Still has not worked yet with sorting this DCS issue out.

It will not work without DX9. So yes, you have to get it to install DX9. It will not work with DX10/11.

Checked in Windows\sysWOW64\ and d3d9.dll is there as is d3d8.dll, d3d10.dll, d3d11.dll , there also numerous d3dx9.dll's etc so that not problem. (wish it was!) Anyway if I want to replace with another copy of DX9 how do I bypass the 'refuse to instal' over newer copy Dx message?

If you are having an issues with the DX9 web installer, you might try the DX9 standalone redistributable.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

I used it along with removing and re-installing the C++ libraries when I was having a similar issue last year.

I wasn't sure of the issue (other dx9 games worked fine) but suspect a 32 bit program had installed DX9 or had corrupted the DX9 x64 dll registry and perhaps the web installer (running in a 32bit browser) had difficulty recognising the error.

Downloaded and tried to install the DX9 Standalone and it will not install. All I get is that "it is not a valid Win32 application"

directx_Jun2010_redist.exe (95.6Mb) is a self extracting Archive.

When run it should ask you to agree to a MS Licensing agreement and then ask for a folder to copy the extracted DX9 installer and it's updates to.

You then open that folder and run DXSETUP.exe to install DX9.

It does not extract at all. All I get on clicking the icon is message that "it is not a valid Win32 application" even when I run as administrator and it does nothing else. Am I stupid here or is there something I am missing or is the download corrupt?

eXpert tried disabling Windows Defender as well as Avast but no change.

Still must try the USB option you mentioned. One thing I've noticed is that my Kindle Fire EReader no longer USB's to the PC but think that's some Amazon trick to keep control but then maybe part of problem? (I may just root that device into a Android tablet sometime...)

I have currently 'bitten the bullet' and going the route you suggested in post #28 (and as suggested by my support ticket) and am downloading via Torrent, the entire DCS game. Luckily my service provider, as a promotion this month, has added 5gb to my monthly 5, so can, (with possibly buying a little more), survive for October. It will take some time (day or two?) to get in so will look at any other (fast diminishing options) and generally get on with my life! If it still does the same thing after all that then I may just give up on DCS altogether!!! (& concentrate on ROF, Sturmovik, FSX, RTW, NTW) etc Still to re-install NTW & FSX...maybe they will put file into the system that will get DCS to work? They were already installed when I had DCS on old HD)

You mentioned A10C 1.2.6. So I need to get the version that applies to the DCS game version installed? Last time I, unknowingly, downloaded the incorrect A10C version and then was guided to update the A10C from within the game itself with the correct one. I guess I then have to put in licence key once I want to use the A10c module.

Thanks for your concern and help. I guess if one does not treat this all as an interesting challenge/hobby one would go mad! (I would really just like to fly!!!)

SKC. I see were you would tire of all of this. Don't forget to check your USB thing I mentioned earlier, it causes issues for sure and your mention of your ereader makes me think it is highly likely in your case.

It's corrupt, you need to re-download. Where do you live that you only get 5gb/mo and it's that slow?

You so right. 5 days 4 hours to go...sigh! (But then maybe all my peers/trackers or whatever you call them, may be gone to bed?) Any tips on speeding up this Torrent? Am using Bittorrent...have set download speed to Unlimited and reduced upload speed, and given torrent full priority.

BTW: Was trying to wifi some DCS manuals to my kindle, (using wifi explorer which works in the PC browser), when I inadvertently clicked on a shortcut in my hobbies folder. Wifi explorer, showed DCS as been in \Program Files(x86) and not \Program Files as it is now. I thought ah! ha! However using Windows explorer I see it is not in (x86) on my old or new HD and is still in Program Files. Anyway I tried copying both old & new DCS folder to Program Files(x86) and after renaming one or the other, tried to start but no success.

I am wondering...the final collapse of my old HD happened immediately after I had defraqgged using Ultimate Defrag...maybe it somehow screwed up some file placement and the error somehow copied across to my new HD when I copied across the old updated DCS folder. But then why would the problem still show in the "newly installed" DCS folder as well?

A real detective story of (for me:) huge proportions!

Don't worry re: advice on the Torrent...I've given up on that...just tooo slooow! (If I'm lucky it seems I'd only get the game in about 8 weeks!) I see downloading directly, the individual files is much faster, so should be ready to install by weeks end or earlier.

Using a torrent is the fastest download you can get.

There must be a problem with your router forwarding ports.

Open up your local IP to DMZ on it.

Also, do not use bittorrent, use the uTorrent client!

The torrent will give you the fastest download because it connects to all the seeds and downloads parts simultaneously, using up all the available bandwidth speed.

uTorrent 1.8.5

http://www.filehippo.com/download_utorrent/6621/

You can even resume the download from where it's at in bittorrent with uTorrent, just point it to the same download location and it will verify the downloaded parts and continue.

Thanks Expert. My 13 year old Router told me what the problem was by packing up this morning, (I think working the last 3 days was too much for it!) & I think this was why so slow. I went out and got a new one and there is a huge difference. (from <5 kb/s to 90+kb/sec!) My DCS is now due in about 16 hours instead of 10+ weeks! I installed and am using uTorrent as well.

Regarding the A10C module. Must I re-download (version same as game) and install or do I just update from the game (IF DCS installs this time!) and reinsert the licence key somewhere?

Get 1.2.6 and allow it to patch.

I have two ver. on my PC at all times, as even 1.2.6 with patch has issues and I just want to fly. So 1.1.1.1 is always available to me on a separate drive. SSD and extra ver. on HDD.

Although I should change my extra copy to 1.2.5 as it is stable in Multi player and would be the one I would choose If I were to reload all ver.

skc Can't start Sim

I am beginning to wonder if this "Starforce" DRM has something to do with all these game glitches.

I for one have given up on the ...007b non-start issue I am having. Great game and I was planning to spend $$$ on add-on's but have become very disapointed in the game as well as the support I've received.

SKC I hope you do not allow this to stop you from enjoying this "Great Simulator".

How is the Re-Install going?

And as far as the Moderators suggestion that you read "Programming Data" to better understand your errors. Please forgive his mistake, it is not your responsibility to read nor insure your software is void of "Leaks" nor C++ programming errors. I can only imagine this would frustrate any none "Game Developer" who purchases a product and then is instructed on how to "Re-Program" it. After your problem is fixed I am sure like me you will find this blog very informative and as interesting as I did. Thanks Skate for the info. I enjoyed reading it over coffee this mourning.

So Please do the reinstall and let me know in our other thread how it goes. I assure you it is worth it. and don't forget the suggestions made in it. USB. and reinstalling. as you indicated you had an older USB device you replaced, also why you believe it to be a potential star force error.

Hope to see ya in the not so friendly skies.

I am sorry you are so disappointed in the support you have received, understand the hundreds of thousands of hardware configurations out there, and then add outside software, etc, and you have a pretty daunting challenge in helping someone like yourself who is having a pretty unique issue....
