I'm up to mission two, and I'm kind of curious if anyone has some advice here. The target is a column of artillery protected by four man-portable Stingers, and they can apparently reload those pretty darned fast—if I get anywhere near the target below 3000 meters, they fire off several missiles at me and my wingman both (more than four). I had some success killing some of the launcher infantry with S-8 rockets fired at long range, but that's not ideal for killing the targets.

It mostly seems to me like the speed of re-engagement and the number of rounds carried for the infantry is a little high, but ignoring that, is the best way to keep out of trouble just to stay high up and far out? Even a floor of 2500 meters was too low for delivering bombs.

I think the ceiling of the Stinger is something like 4000 meters so you're pretty screwed no matter what. Fly fast. Do a lot of jinking. And drop flares like mad. And watch like a hawk for smoke trails.

The most important lesson to learn in that campaign is to do only a single attack run, get all your weapons off and then head home. Historically the odds of being shot down skyrocket when doing follow-on attacks.

The stingers will spawn some time after you've entered the target area.

First time I did this mission they took me by surprise when I lined up for my second rocket run.

Second time I took 32 Fab-100 bombs and rippled them with a small interval at about 150ft. Study your map and follow the road early on to get lined up correctly with the column. Then, lay down that carpet ! I killed every vehicle in the column in the first run and RTB'ed...

I haven't tired that mission yet though when you start the mission load the maximum number of flares (unless you are getting a radar lock, then just keep a few chaffs).

Like everyone says stay fast (that is key)

Try to mask your ingress and/or egress points, if you can hide behind anything the better.

Try continuous counter measure dispensing just before you enter the engagement zone. The continuous dispensing isn't frequent enough at times, but if you are proactive and remain fast it may be enough for your situation.

Depending on the weather, try to egress out towards the sun, it may help to distract the IR lock.

Maybe as a least ditch effort, try to dive bomb the artillery. Approach from the same angle of the sun, get some speed, flare and let it rip. Afterward keep your energy by staying low to the ground and fly out of their engagement zone. Repeat for the other units.

I cant believe this mission is kicking my arse! While SURE I have blown up the objective a few times. Something always happens on the RTB to me. :D

What is surprising is that it is a pretty simple mission with pretty dumb ai on an open plain. I just suck with fixed wing stuff I guess. I mean the m109's do not even have their aa machine guns in DCS. My last run was wasting 1/2 the convoy. Including one of the 2 m113's. So I figured only 2 stingers left. YA NO. took out the remaining m113 and the 2 stinger guys by it with guided something... and got blown up by the 2 stinkers that spawn even with their ride blown up.

Whatever... I picked up the mi8 as a distraction.

This mission might not require you to eliminate the entire convoy. Similar to the first mission in the campaign, it might only require you to kill a target in order to succeed.

NO all the missions in that campaign you just need to kill enough and land your plane intact at the end and is a pass.

But they sure did not really play test this thing when they brought it over from fc2. In mission 5-1? BMD-1's spawn on top of the transport planes and stupid gaz66 block the taxi ways to the air strip! My ai wingman got stuck due to the gaz66 on the taxi way!

In 4-2? ATC did a crap job directing traffic on returning/leaving flights. A landing mig29 and 2 su25A's facing off two leaving su25a's on the taxi way.

Oh boy... can't wait to catch up to those missions :)

The FIM-92C is a fire-and forget system with a one-time use launch tube. All they're doing is removing the grip-stock and putting it on the next tube. Standard loadout for USMC teams is 4 missiles per team (which I'm assuming is the same for the rest of NATO), so unless you wipe the column off the map in the first run you're in serious trouble.

My advice is to either use S-13 pods, S-8 pods, or 500lb retarded bombs and make your run at about 200m at a downward angle and moving very, very fast. Only make one run and leave.

I have found that in some of these missions, the stinger troops only come out when the targets spots you or when they are under attack.

I agree with TheSmileyBastard, in that your first pass better be a good one. Otherwise the stinger troops are too much to deal with.

Not to mention that giving the distance you sometimes have to travel, you only have a few passes before you have to RTB or risk running out of fuel.

I had a lot of "frustration" with this mission, mostly because I just don't have deep tactical knowledges with the SU-25.

But, I found my way to handle this type of mission. I have loaded my plane with 100kg bombs only. Set the ripple on 0.3, arround 500 km/h at 1000 meters and be there first to carpet bomb them ... before the column will split to road sides. One pass, success 100% and RTB. Sounds more like a hack :D !

Is working pretty well with cluster bombs also.

^^This is accurate. When I was in the U.S. Army, my job was stinger gunner. We actually carried 6 as I recall, the hummer's had these really cool racks on them to carry the missiles. I actually got to fire 2 of them in real life =) (unfortunately it was at drones, but I got 2 kills  ) I remember in training they informed us that the stinger has a +97% kill rate when fired correctly. They also informed us that once we fired our 1st missile, our remaining life expectancy was less than 5 seconds, as pilots didn't appreciate having our missiles chase them down....lol. I don't know how accurately the usage of the stinger is modeled in-sim, but best bet is VERY low and VERY fast so the gunner doesn't have a chance to lock onto you, because if he gets lock, you will probably go KA-BOOM!.

I have found that if I know where the launcher is located, I can get it every time with 130mm rockets, usually before he fires. If he does fire, start spitting out flares and the stinger will go for them 9 times out of 10.

drop some slick bombs from over 4k feet, this is how i remove manpads.

why slick bombs? cause the blast radius will kill infantry nearby you don't need to hit directly, if necessary bait a missile or two out by skirting the area below 3.5k feet give yourself say 20 km separation making note of where the launches were and not losing it, get a good pass setup and get the piper on the area, press hold weapon release (altitude will probably have fallen down to around 3k - 3.5k) begin climbing with the space you still have left... result at 4 - 4.5k you have flown to the release point bombs away and manpads all dead.
