While this demo is WAY too short, it is enough to give you a taste of why castAR is a MUST HAVE if you're a cockpit builder.

The castAR Kickstarter only has 13 hours or so to go, so get in on it!

It projects onto the surface you are looking at. No glass.

i can't seem to fully grasp how this works, the projectors are mounted on glasses and project on to a surface wearer looks, right? or is it projecting on glass surface itself?

It projects on surface (special fabric ) You see 3d image every where there is that fabric. If you cover your wall with that material , you can have 360 theater for flight sims .. there is very accurate 6dof tracking in classes

It uses a "retro-reflective" material. It's basically fabric that's got millions of tiny glass prisms embedded in it and most (if not all) the light coming out the projectors gets reflected straight back. This allows multiple users to share the same RR surface, which makes creating things like tandem cockpits a practical endeavor.

The glasses can also track multiple tracking targets, which means that you can build a cockpit that allows you to move your head anywhere you need to and the system won't lose tracking. With the recent meeting of the $900K goal, they're adding a full IMU which means that even if the IR tracker loses all the targets, it still won't lose tracking.

Yep, I also pledged the $285 pledge level. Looking into viability of Nthusim HMD integration and separately a simpit project. Only 11 hours left till the Kickstarter closes.

Even if you don't want a full cockpit, you could easily create a full, wrap-around display with a couple meters worth of the RR fabric and a castAR. :D

I pledged on day one. I actually have no specific plans but something is bound to occur to me.

So how do you think would a cockpit builder use this? For outside view the ordinary projector seems much more usable (brighter and sharper) albeit stationery. For switches and panels you need those in hardware anyways. This only leaves stuff like gauges and mfcds and such

My thoughts are that you could use this for external views and the MFCD + CDU. CastAR is stereoscopic (i.e.3D) is priced about $300 (AFAIK) and 1 or 3 projectors are priced much higher.

Also I imagine it would be much lower performance hit on the computer, as far as I understand, it only renders whats in your field of view.

I bet a 3D DCS with proper depth perception will make formation flying and landings much easier.
