A HELICOPTER has crashed on a roof of a busy bar in Glasgow, reportedly causing injuries to those inside.

The aircraft crashed on Clutha Bar by the River Clyde during a live gig. Uncomfirmed reports suggest that Jim Murphy MP was at the scene of the accident at the time of the crash. The Labour politician tweeted: “Terrible here in Glasgow. Helicopter crashed into roof of pub.”

Helicopter crash in Glasgow

10.35 tonight a Police EC 135 crashed into the Clutha bar pub in glasgow. Not much info yet though other than eye witness accounts. Civilian pilot and two police in helicopter. No evidence of fatalities yet. It's only a few hundred metres from my work! Shit man, hope everyone is ok.

I read about this on my BBC news app. Most unfortunate, and sorry to hear about it. Especially with the loss of life, both the unknowing folks in the pub and the first responder (Police & Pilot). :(

Which would make sense as I doubt the average business establishment has a roof designed to handle the weight.

I questioned The Lack of Fire/Explosion, then when pictures started coming out on social streams, I questioned the Lack of Damage to the Rotor Blades, which other than being snaped in half, were still 99% attached to the chopper.

Had it fallen out of the sky, the rotors would have been torn off and thrown out by forces. and there would have been some form of Fuel Fire/Explosion.

It seemed like Someone Landed it there, shut down, part of the roof broke, drew some attention then a moment later the roof caved in, sending broken wood and debris + a Chopper into a crowd.

*Not saying it wasnt/couldnt have been an Emergency Landing due to Mechanical Failure*

Sad Weekend for alot of people.

Weird thing is there some odd reports from eye witnesses. One person in the pub said the roof partly bulged downwards then a few minutes later it caved in. Another said he heard engine spluttering noises. But no one saw it happen or at least none come forward yet. The chopper was flying low and no explosion suggests to me either ran out of fuel or it was a soft landing and the roof couldn't take the weight. But it would have only fallen 20ft maybe so I'd have though the pilot and police officers would have been safe inside. The pub itself was a chopped down tenement block after a major fire. No one inside heard it because of a loud band playing. That area would have had a bit of traffic on the road so maybe that explains the roof landing. Only a couple of hundred metres from my work too. Will be interesting to find out after the investigation.

Respect to all involved and condolences to all who lost friends and family

The roof of the pub was actually three roofs or rather after it became a single storey it had been re-roofed on two further occasions, this would maybe explain the initial bulge in the pub ceiling before the heli dropped through further?

While the roads around the Clutha are busy at peak times, they would not have been busy at the time of the incident, also, across the road from the pub are two huge public car parks which would have been practically empty at that time of night.

I don't believe the pilot intentionally set down on the roof, earliest eye witness accounts reported the craft as having no power and no noise.

Like mr mojo, I work a few hundred metres away.

Thoughts and prayers to all affected.

Dave

Latest was that the fuel tanks were full. No explosion occurred due to the nature if the fuel tank design - they contain some kind of fuel bladder that is self repairing/inflating (I guess like car tyres). Apparently though, according to eye witnesses the rotor blades were not turning when it came down. Not sure how this could happen though, I'll have to look into it

Latest in is investigation was that both engines flamed out. 76 kg of fuel in the main tank but other reserve tanks didn't have much in them but warning lights were on. But still confusion as to why no mayday call was made or why an autorotation, flare and landing was not accomplished
