Corserius Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Hi all. I am somewhat new to DCS but have a bit of experience in Lock on series. My question is "How do you identify(locate) ground targets with out using simplified radar?":dunno: With simplified radar and targets marked with names(red/blue) are easy to locate in single player but in multiplayer games i am nearly useless ,F10 helps a bit but not enough. Any tips , suggestions , tricks , graphics adjustments are welcome . Thank you. SFAL Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Yes...advise..yes... First you turn off that -beep-ing thing. Replay single player missions like that. That simple. Thats me soundi like a ..ck i know. So here bit more detail. In MP missions if the mission designer is not a realism freak like most of us..khm...then the waypoints are a really good way to find stuff. Im sure that you know how to use the radio compass. Say the brief says that the objective is at WP 3. Select NAV ENR and toggle to WP3. On the compass the yellow arrow will point to the direction and on the top corner of it you see the distance and required heading. The orange arrow is the route but you dont need to follow unless...yeah dont worry about it now. So u have set this. Select AG mode and with the targeting display look toward the WP with the range on it matching the radio compass range to target. voala.... have fun and really.... turn off the "radar" use cockpit only no external view no labels and refly the missions. It will be ballsweating hard. Yes... but trust me... in MP you have to worry about not just finding stuff but crazy MIG29 pilots like me who want a piece of you. And we all want a piece of you soon or latter ;) Oh and then there are SAMs too....and oh boy they want you.....ALL OF YOU!! Good luck and get on TS see if some one can show more. ahhh and one more thing.. Welcome to MP
pepin1234 Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 (edited) if you are new in DCS. The best is learn all the armament and procedures with Labels on. So you should care only about the armament procedure. After you get some Level with armament you should Play missions with Labels off and Targets visibles with F10 map. In this case you should use the F-10 Tools. In the Combined Arms Manual you have a good Explanation at page 9 about the F-10 Tools. Every tool is important but the most important is the Distance tool, Detection Zone, Threat Zone and the Map Type Buttons right above Distance Tool: The most important. Select this tool and right click at your plane then move the mouse at the target Position. You will get distance and heading so you can can get the right direction. Use Map Type Buttons and select Sat. Then you have a really good view of battle map and you can locate them much better. Please in this case you should care every Detail of the Sat view. Then you have Detection Zone and threat Zone, usefull to know when you are inside the enemy Air-defences Missiles range Edited January 29, 2014 by pepin1234 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Frostie Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 1st. Read the Briefing, the location of enemy units you need to destroy should be there be it waypoints, grid reference, villages etc. from there you can use either your set waypoints or the F10 map to figure out where the enemy is. 2nd. Always plan ahead (preferably using the map) before take off, such as how far away and which direction is the target zone, which waypoints are hot zones and where are my friendlies located. Don't just take off and then try and figure out where the bad guys are, that just equals frustration. If anything use pen and paper. 3rd. Don't fly straight into the target area, approach it and try and evaluate what is there from over 10km away using the Shkval TV. For example if waypoint 2 is the target area when you're at 30km to wp2 switch the Shkval on and set it at 30km in the direction of wp2, you're now looking at the target area and can assess what is there, scan around and see if you can see any units. Once you find units, providing this is a NATO v Russia mission, you can now assess whether they are enemy units or friendly. Another method is to visualise the waypoint through the cockpit at about 20km, zoom in with the mk1 eyeball and look for the tell tale dots of units, then Shkval onto them to ID. It's important at this stage that you don't get too close to the target area, you don't know what is there and getting within 5km can end up with an unexpected IR missile in the face, patience is key, but in a busy MP server you've got to keep a third eye looking for bandits on your RWR and also your head out of the cockpit. 1 "[51☭] FROSTIE" #55 'Red 5'. docfu Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Just like Frostie said. The hardest thing to learn in this game is that nothing is spoon-fed to you. The waypoints are there to give you a general idea of where to go, but finding the enemy, that's YOUR job. In fact, that's the entire point of being a military pilot. Whatever gets you there, kills the bad guys, and gets you home in one piece...
Jimbolya Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 I use the LLTV pod - it helps to show the targets - I have a hard time spotting them visually as well, but I stay above 3000 ft to avoid IR sams. I don't have track IR and it makes it really hard to use 3 control surfaces just to fly around vs. having a headmount to look around. also make more than 1 pass over target area - one for observation and to get comfortable with what's going on in the kill box and land marks.... Vikhr is your best friend -
Corserius Posted January 30, 2014 Author Posted January 30, 2014 Thanks for quick replies. These tips and advises helped a lot , i made a simplest mission in editor with trucks as ground targets in different locations and for now practicing on that, no labels , F10 and way points .Mission is a bit boring and it's really hard to give up on labels once you're used to them , but i believe practice makes perfect. Next step figuring out all the editor tools.
HiJack Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 I don't have track IR and it makes it really hard to use 3 control surfaces just to fly around vs. having a headmount to look around. You miss 75% of the flying experience without TrackIR and TrackClip Pro. You only get the 25% straight ahead without it.

Hi, my Shkval only indicates range from 10 km, how can I set it at 30km in the direction of wp2? any trick?
Jimbolya Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 huh - i didn't know it had such a range as well... LLTV helps as well since the vehicles stand out as white object against the land...
splash Posted February 3, 2014 Posted February 3, 2014 huh - i didn't know it had such a range as well... LLTV helps as well since the vehicles stand out as white object against the land... From 10 km or greater ranges the range indication disappears. With LLTV is minor indeed (8 km, I think).
