Even in an environment where realism and teamwork was the entire focus of the idea, LockOn's Red Flag events still featured a near 50/50 A2A ratio of players. If ED even did make a "multiplayer balanced" variation or a "realism mode"... the multiplayer would just become a "balanced airquake" or a "realistic airquake"2 points

Its not a fair question as balance is completely dependent on who is playing, how many are playing, and what aircraft they are flying. Mission design also plays a major factor in effecting balance but not as much as you might think. Balance it flight sims is quite difficult to achieve compared to FPS and RTS games, because there is a slight random and uncontrollable factor about it. This factor is missiles, you can increase its chances of hitting the target by firing in favorable conditions, but it is still a wild card scenario. Its kind of why Company of Heroes (RTS) hasn't hit it big as a competition play RTS game. The AI units you control can actually miss, and thus doesn't have a static DPS, causing the comp players who like to crunch the numbers to figure out their best mathematical advantage and unit composition to not like it as much. Unlike an RTS like Starcraft where the Zealot does x DPS by himself and Y DPS when used with uber-micro. But a balanced game of LockOn MP is an asymmetrical balance. In the exact same 1v1 scenario the battle won't play out exactly the same way every time, the players tactics come into play. The actions and possibilities increase as more players and AI sam sites are added into the mix. As a whole with mods and MP. Players need to know what they are joining, and what other players might be using while in server. It simply isn't fair to a player who joins a server and their teammates have a information advantage for the sake of realism and the player doesn't. And for the love of science don't bring up the argument that VOIP is basically the same thing. because its not, the key difference is that people CHOOSE to join a voip for their sake of realism. Not knowing about a "realism enhancing" mod or 3rd party app completely takes their choice away as they DONT know about it. Listing a link to download it isn't any good either. As the player must exit the game, set up the new app so it works, and then load back in. Its the same reason that while many squads list their IP info for a VOIP client, nobody joins. Even when I have it installed and setup. I don't join the 51st VOIP out of habit when I join their server, I join our VOIP. We can't depend on "realistic" scenarios either. Even if the F-15 gets a boost in performance (missiles/other) in LockOn it wont win a 8-2 fight against Migs or any other Russian bird. Besides people, by instinct and given the choice, will almost always join the team that has fewer players. Its true at least in terms of A2A slots. Bottom line. If the server allows them, "realism enhancing mods" need to be declared on a player by player basis. So everyone else in the server knows which player is using them and which isn't. Furthermore server control needs to exist to be able to limit their capabilities. If a F-15 enters a fight with datalinking he should not be allowed to carry 8 Aim-120s. For the sake of mentioning, aesthetic mods for the most part are a non-issue. Only the mods that can enhance gameplay and information are an issue.2 points

Balance is part of the realism. Many talk about balance as if it's only a 50/50 balance. Obviously this is not truly realistic, but neither is a balance of 10/90. Not all feature will be implemented, and so realism will always be compromised. F.e. RWR and IFF in LO completely destroys the realism part as these two systems are way overmodeled. Pilots can determine from 60nm away that the contact is a bandit and this never fails. Same goes for RWR which will give you a very good picture 99% of the time. Completely flawed when compared to reality. And if you're just adding more and more features (which also are flawless), you'll end up with super-duper planes which are very far from realistic as reality includes a lot of failures, limitation and randomness which cant be portrayed well in the Sim The developers have to find the right mix for all the aircraft in order to get a realistically balanced Sim, and by that I dont mean a 50/50 balance ;) Something like this; F-15 should be slightly better than a Su-27 and both of those should be quite a lot better then the Mig etc...2 points

I agree with Case, makes no sense... And if LEAVU is the subject, the main concern, IMO is not realism vs balance, but rather transparency and fair play...2 points

Can some one explain GG's post below and Yoda's comments in the LEAVU LUA code? While in Lua Export/Config/Export/Export.lua it says: -- Eagle Radar Improvements and LEAVU for LOP Beta. -- Author of ERI and LEAVU: Johan 'Yoda' Kjölhede -- Currently requires global script exports (EnableExportScript = true in config.lua) -- Correction : Apparently it doesnt.....LoGetObjectByID is not considered global in DCS :) !!!! and in Lua Export/Config/Export/Config.lua it says: -- enable export some cheatering functions LoGetWorldObjects() etc, other functions enabled by default EnableExportScript = false -- set true to enable Export.lua script, please -- LoGetWorldObjects() always available in single player game and on the server and finally in Lua Export/Config/Export/ERI_fcns.lua it says: -- =================================== -- Workaround since LOP LoGetObjectById doesnt want to work in MP.... -- Wrap and overload the function entirely and keep our own state of world objects, -- based on what our radar has seen or not seen -- =================================== Maybe I am missing something here, but I just want to make it clear whether or not LEAVU can be controlled on multiplayer servers. Maybe some of the ED developers are reading this and can shed some light on the issue. Keep this discussion specifically on how export works. -EtherealN1 point

Poko/Vault/Pilatasso, dumbing down the original game wasnt the question. Neither if a mod was to do that. Unfortunately what I tried to indiate through the followup-text wasnt percived correctly - this poll will look a bit odd. ;) I rather wanted to see if it irrelevant to maintain balance - or if it's important enough to devote time & resources into it for the Mod-makers. So in the that aspect - you can see that quite many people thinks balance is irrelevant. No time to devote time or consideration to it. There seems to be 3 people that thinks it's worth using time and resources to keep preventing exploits / balance breaking mechanisms from reaching the MP when 3'rd party modders create new addons. (I'm one of them ;) ) I think in that context more would "care" - so I think I've must have written it very badly in the start there somewhere :) But the following posts are quite interesting any many aspects - because it discussed things I didnt originally intend. :) Also I'm sure we'll see more and more "I want more real simulators from ED" which isnt the topic at all. :) EDIT: PS: I suck at creating polls - it had to be said ;)1 point

I vote for realism, any realistic modification to LO's aircraft regarding avionics, flight performance and weapons should be implemented into the code by the devs, all aircraft and their associated weapons and avionics should be modelled as accurately as reasonably practical, if that made Fighter/Bomber/Heli A better than B at A2A/A2G then so be it.1 point

Link to the 1.0.1c ReadMe file on the Files page (same as original 1.0.1 ReadMe): http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/ReadMe1.0.1_EN.txt Relavent text: This information was also included in the ReadMe of the actual patch download, AFAIK. However, it is indeed missing in the Patch Announcement sticky thread in the Official Announcements and Updates section. Regarding the topic at hand and the problems it is causing from the moderators' point of view: In case you have not noticed, one of our long-standing forum rules is the following: We wish the official ED forum to be a free and open venue for online players to discuss and evolve the simulation experience, but - no offense to any individual here - there is a strong track record of problematic discussions between squad members when arguing online play. The degree to which this discussion will be open here is entirely dependedant upon those carrying it forward.1 point

And it was publicised as a feature when the patch features was announced, as far as I recall. It is not news. But guys, a general reminder: keep this thread to LEAVU and subjects directly related to it. General security mechanisms related to LUA exporting is a different topic and can be discussed in a thread dedicated to it.1 point

. .1 point

While having functional electro-mechanical guages would be a serious plus for a simpit, setting up a couple of monitors behind a cutout would probably be the better choice online given the exploits possible with the export.lua Take BaD CRC's Blackshark pit as an example. All of the guages and the ABRIS, are there. Just on monitors behind a cutout. LEAVU, while a very inventive addon, shouldn't be allowed in online play unless, as stated earlier, there was a export.lua settings could be specified via server side. Personally, I think that would probably be the best and fastest route to achieve. I have tried LEAVU and, until someone pointed out the exploits possible, I thought it was a hechuva idea. Now I think it's a heckuva idea that's dangerous to the online community. A player being able to extrapolate data that should not be accessible is not a good thing ;) At the same time, there needs to be a way for the pit enthusiasts to play online without having the means to exploit the game.1 point

Second thought - this poll is really interesting. Reality always looks for supremacy but in different areas. Both sides (red/blue) fight for it that is why balance comes from reality but we can not call it clearly fifty-fifty situation in all time frames. It even can't be easily measured. If LO stick to the reality, overall balance will not be able to be measured - it shouldn't be. In one area red side is better - in other the blue one.1 point

I can't believe the ignorance of what is going on here, i've no doubt the creators have every intention of using this online as to fly offline is a non event for these guys. This is were the lack of balance is, for those that don't seem to understand the term balance it doesn't relate to gameplay fairness it relates to REALISM BALANCE. Sort of pitching a pee shooter disguised as an AK-47 against a real live M-16. One aircraft can't have uber realistic features were another doesn't this is the imbalance. In Falcon you have ONE plane so the mod relates to all. All this talk about realism is just down to the individuals ideal and has no scope to suit Lockon. This is not Falcon. You can call this an F-15 datalink all you like because its dressed up to look that way, but it could be put in a to a pink frame with flowers around the outside and be called a Game Radar Modifier if you like. The fact is it is not part of lockon it is actually taking information that is not avaliable to you in game and presenting it to you in game format. Absolutely nowhere near in comparison as sharing information through the use of human speech, you know the natural thing we are all blessed with for social contact. TeamSpeak/Ventrilo doesn't take game code and present it to you so you can see what you shouldn't. This claim is ridiculous. While in theory this is a wonderous idea in fact its an abonomation. If I created a Nuclear attack application, which I claim as realistic, this would then allow me to log into servers hit the button and kill every aircraft in the server, all in the name of realism. Then when everyone got fed up with me constantly Nuking them they move onto another server which I would just pop in their and rinse and repeat. What utter BS. I wouldn't dream of creating such an unbalancing mod because it would be immoral. But if I had intentions for my own selfish pursuits to have my realistic fun without being labeled a menace or whatever I would need to release this to the community with their approval that I was doing this in the interest of realism, and then I could have my fun unhindered. What joy.:doh:1 point

Panzer, I voted for realism... but I did so because I largely agree with something you wrote in another thread. That being that balance can be addressed by mission design. I do think that balance is very important. Coders can certainly have an effect upon that, but they don't have exclusive control over it. Realism (talking about aircraft fidelity here), on the other hand, is much more in the hands of the coders, with less opportunity for the mission designers to tweak/adjust.1 point

If this poll is in response to the development of LEAVU, then I see no reason why you could not satisfy both options at the same time. In this excellent post CyBerkut provides a possible way of giving server admins the control to decide if they want balanced gameplay or realistic gameplay. If implemented it would allow players to just pick the server that suits their type of gameplay best.1 point

did I just read this right, if so... this is such double standard... so you don't care if I make some application as long as I don't use it? How does that make sense... really?1 point

It has hapened before, look at UK's Tornado F-3's for example, they took AMRAAMs for years without datalink capability (due to integration and funding problems) so they were limited at BVR by AMRAAM's having to fly into the last known target predicted point before launch. PK will be reduced against a manueverable target but BVR capability is not immidiatly and automaticaly nill. Simirlaly for the russian case, using the exportable RVV-AE is not an ideal situation, its a compromise much the same way the brits had when cash got low. Wouldnt be surprised if the datalink was confirmed to have been removed. But I take your point and take note for future referrence to find out whats going on with the RVV-AE's alleged limitations. Will keep an eye on it. I didnt have to prove but I chose to try. :D Good read as always. Cheers.1 point

Good. I think the community would be grateful if you continued trying to sort that out before you release it. Just think of events like Red Flag. Would be hard to get that to happen again if data link cannot be agreed on and is not controllable!1 point
